CHEAPER PS 3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEW YORK - Sony Corp. on Thursday cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console in the U.S. and announced an even cheaper model that will arrive before the holiday shopping season.

The top-line PlayStation model, with an 80 gigabyte hard drive, now costs $499, down from $599. That effectively eliminates the lower-end model, which has a 60-gigabyte drive and has sold for $499.

A new low-end model with a 40-gigabyte drive will go on sale Nov. 2 for $399.

Unlike the other PlayStation 3 models, the new one won't be able to play games made for the PlayStation 2. In a statement, Sony said this was due to a more extensive lineup of games of the PlayStation 3.

The U.S. launch of the 40-gigabyte model was widely expected, since Sony has already announced it for Japan and Europe. It narrows the price gap with competing game consoles, but the PlayStation is still the most expensive.

Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 costs $350 and Nintendo Corp.'s Wii costs $250. The PlayStation 3 has been trailing them both in U.S. sales, and the Wii has been a breakout hit for Nintendo, with more than 9 million units shipped. Sony has sold 5 million PlayStation 3s since they went on sale in November last year.

Does the current 80GB version come with any games and/or an extra controller like the 60GB does in the Europe?
If so, it means (like in Europe), the 40GB version isn't good value for money.

See, some companies are starting to get that message. Yesterday Apple intros Leopard for $129USD/CAD and now Sony has gone ahead and done the same with the 40GB PS3 ($399USD/CAD) and 80GB ($499USD/CAD). You can still pick up the 60GB PS3 @ Futureshop for $479 (not so much of a deal though).

Parity is good...

What's so wierd about that? Its only the most important feature for me right now
I'd say what you need is a PS2, not a PS3

The new 40gb models do not play ps2 games. But they do play ps1 games. I don't think sony could ever get the software emulation working for the PS2 games properly. So the cheaper way of doing it, instead of fixing it is getting rid of it. Its going to be a long time before I buy a ps3, as they are still too expensive and have nothing games wise worth getting for it.

400 dollars is not too expensive considering the price of it's old cost and the XBox 360's price.

I'm sure this Christmas, PS3 will sell more than last year.

Sony is actually being a tad reasonable...
