Oh those, they are not needed. Only .cia and that you can put wherever you want.

Don't really know if you can delete the title with fbi. It will show up as a black tile and not work, but if you can ignore it, then just do that. If it bugs you, you may have to restart.

Have you started pasta before? What is your error? Signature failed? Database invalid?

Nope we didn't do pasta yet and I just saw that we need to do that first.. So thnak you!! I'm helping a friend who is thousands of miles away so I can't see what he might have done wrong but I do believe I've figured it out

Anyone have success updating Emunand to 9.5? Mine appeared to be fine but isnt.
Without Menuhax I can trigger browserhax to rxtools and emunand loads 9.5 fine.
Once I install menuhax again in Sysnand, it will open to menuhax, rxtools, then hang on a black screen.
If I delete the extdata 000002cd file then it will let me sliderhax back into rxtools.
In process of restoring the emunand until I can find more info.

Hi, thank you for the very useful guide, followed everything correctly and managed to run EMUNAND 9.2 via Rxtools using the CtrBootManager and installed Devmenu, BigBlueMenu and FBI to my Emunand on my N3DS XL (EMUNAND 9.2, SYSNAND 9.2) . When I try to install a game CIA with FBI this error appears:

I previously sucessfully installed said CIA and got able to run it and play for a few hours. I closed the console and when I came back the screen was frozen black, restarted the console and EMUNAND would not start. So I injected my backup nand using emuNANDTool_1.0.3 and got emunand to run again the same as it was.
Tried to reinstall the previously mentioned CIA with all three cia managers but I'm still getting errors. Is there anything I'm missing?

Jan 8th: Downgraded and homebrew / FBI not working?

If you used the new downgrade methodes and you can't seem to run any homebrew (crashes with black screen) or FBI gives you signature errors despite you doing everything right, chances are your downgrade was not successful! Check this thread to figure out if you potentially suffer from a bad or incomplete downgrade. Non-working homebrew after a downgrade is not my fault. Once you get your issues figured out, you can follow my tutorial.

Jan 6th: rxTools crashing to red/black screen?

If you have rxTools crash into red/black screen, change theme in your EmuNAND once! Chances are you had Menuhax installed before creating EmuNAND and now it got copied over, changing theme will remove it from EmuNAND and your rxTools will autoboot as it should! To get into EmuNAND when having these crashes, just hold your Menuhax button after selecting rxTools in CtrBootManager.

So basically this will guide you from absolute scratch, e.g. formatting a suitable microSD to coldbooting rxTools EmuNAND where you can install unsigned cia, and all this without the former hassles of Cubic Ninja and Gateway thanks to the new emunand9 tool by d0k3.

Yes, this is absolutely only valid for NEW 3DS/XL on Firmware 9.0-9.2, as you'll be needing the browser. If you are looking to set up your Old 3DS/2DS, check out the tutorial by samiam144 here. Basically O3DS/2DS users can also use this guide, but the firmware file for rxTools will be a different one. Check samiam144 tutorial under Step 2 on how to get the firmware file. Otherwise you can also use my guide for the rest.

The exploits are not 100% failsafe, so your N3DS can and probably will freeze a couple times. If you hang with a red screen when starting Homebrew Launcher or hang with a black screen when starting rxTools, just press the power button for some seconds if that happens, the device will shut down and you can try again. So let's get started.

If you already have your microSD working in your 3DS or want to keep your contents, you of course skip this step. This only needs to be done if you set up a new microSD.

Find a microSD of desired size. I used a SanDisk 64GB Ultra SDXC but any good brand should do the job.

The card needs to be formatted to FAT32. If using a SDHC (up to 32GB) you can just use Windows' own right-click on drive format tool for that.

If you have a larger SDXC, Windows won't let you format it to FAT32, so use this tool called guiformat

Simply select your drive letter which is your microSD and click Start

Put the card in your N3DS and start it. This creates the \Nintendo 3DS folder.

Now your microSD is prepared correctly.

This step is adapted from Complete Custom Firmware Guide by dark_samus3, How-to install a CFW on a 9.0-9.2 N3DS without CN/OOT by VerseHell and More-or-less Catch-All Tutorial by Sgt. Luiz.

You will need the following:

Homebrew starter pack by smealum (scroll down to Preparing your SD card)

EmuNAND9 by d0k3

FBI by Steveice10 (newest version should be fine, if you have troubles, use 1.4.15)

PastaCFW Ninjhax 9.0-9.2 version from VerseHell's thread

if that doesn't work, try MiniPasta by zoogie

Extract the Starter Pack onto your microSD. In the \3ds folder you will find all "apps" that HBL can launch.

You need to add the folders of Pasta, EmuNAND9 and FBI that include the *.3dsx and *.smdh files to this folder and they will also appear in Homebrew Launcher.

Just to clarify, the file structure will look like this for all the apps: microSD:\3DS\EmuNAND9\EmuNAND9.3dsx and EmuNAND9.smdh

If you set up a fresh microSD, do the following two steps to create a working database.

Navigate to the \Nintendo 3DS folder on the microSD and open the folder that's all numbers and letters. Inside will be another folder that's all numbers and letters. Open that and you will see a folder called \extdata.

Create a new folder called \dbs there, next to the folder called \extdata. Put the two files that came in dbs.zip, called import.db and title.db, into the \dbs folder.

Don't do this if you already have a \dbs folder containing import.db and title.db in there!

Find FBI.cia in your FBI package and copy it to your microSD.

I like to keep them in a folder called \cia, but it really doesn't matter where you put .cia files, you can browse for them later.

Put the microSD back in your N3DS.

If you set up a fresh microSD, you need to rebuild the database now. Start your 3DS, go to System Settings, Data Management, Nintendo 3DS, Software. It will show a warning that the database files are corrupt and need to be rebuilt. Do this and exit System settings.

Without this, FBI won't start thus you will not be able to install .cia files. You will also need to do this after you setup EmuNAND and unlink, so keep this in mind.

Now you need to start HBL. Start your N3DS, set up a working internet connection (don't worry, it won't update) and deactivate it using the little wrench icon on the top left of your touch screen. Then press L+R to bring up the camera, click the little checkerboard icon in the lower left and scan the QR Code you can find here. This will show an url, accept it and your browser will open. While the browser loads, press Home button, go to the little wrench icon again and activate your Internet connection. Then open the browser. Now the browserhax exploit will load and open up Homebrew Launcher.

This can take some tries, for me it works in about 9 out of 10 cases. If you get a red screen, just shut down your N3DS and try again.

You will be in Homebrew Launcher now. Scroll down to PastaCFW and start it. This will bring up your home menu again, but with Pasta patches applied, meaning you can install unsigned .cia files now.

Repeat the steps to get into Homebrew Launcher, open FBI and install the .cia of FBI. Destination needs to be SD. Now FBI is in your SysNAND.

This is necessary so that it gets copied over to EmuNAND in the following step. If for any reason you don't have FBI in your EmuNAND at the end, look at the Beginner's Advice at the end of the tutorial for a solution.

Now just in case to prevent problems later on, click the little wrench icon in Home menu and change your theme once.

In case you played around with Menuhax before, this will break it and thus prevent later problems of rxTools crashing because of MenuHax being in EmuNAND, where it doesn't belong.

Enter Homebrew Launcher again and start EmuNAND9. Now create a NAND backup by navigating to EmuNAND Manager Options and Dump SysNAND to NAND.bin.

This takes about 8 to 10 minutes I'd say, let it sit and connect it to power if you are a bit low on battery.

Once that is done, press Select to unmount your microSD, take out the microSD and backup all contents of the card to your PC as the next step will delete everything on your microSD. Don't worry, you can restore your backup afterwards.

Probably the most important file on your microSD now is your NAND backup in a file called NAND.bin. I can not stress this enough. Take that file, make copies in safe locations, burn it to a DVD-R, upload it to some cloud, I don't know, just never lose that thing. Thanks to the new downgrade exploits you won't need it for downgrades at the moment (but probably will once Nintendo fixes the exploits) but anyhow this file is your only way to recover your device if you screw something up so enormously that nothing but a hardmod can revive your N3DS.

Put the microSD back into your device and press B twice to return to EmuNAND9 main menu. This time choose Complete EmuNAND Setup and ignore the warning that starter.bin is missing by pressing A. Follow the on-screen instructions to format your EmuNAND. Doing so will delete everything on your microSD, which is correct.

This will again take around 8 to 10 minutes. Power down your N3DS afterwards.

Put the microSD back in your computer. Copy back everything from your backup to your microSD (except NAND.bin), overwriting existing files. Put it in your N3DS again and start it.

You may notice that the card is now seemingly around 2GB smaller than before. This is because EmuNAND is created in a hidden partition of your microSD.

If you run into any problems with EmuNAND9, you can use an alternative way with Gateway. Read the spoiler on how to do so:

Download the latest Gateway package from their homepage.

Inside you will find a folder called \GW_ultra_*** (depends on version number) which has a launcher.dat inside.

Copy that to the root of your microSD.

Then extract the GW_3dsx file to your microSD (it's just like other homebrew apps, the \GW folder needs to go into \3ds).

Backup your microSD contents now, then start Homebrew Launcher and launch Gateway.

Format Emunand, make a NAND backup, restore your microSD contents and continue with unlinking.

What you want to do now is unlink NANDs and that's easy. Go to System Settings, Other Settings, scroll to the last page and choose Format System Memory. Don't format it yet with your microSD still in the device! (see next point)

If there's a prompt asking you to connect to the internet, do it, don't worry, there'll be no update.

Afterwards there will be a warning asking you if you really want to format the device, now take out your microSD card. Don't forget to do that or you can repeat everything up to now. Then format the device and reboot. During reboot, put your microSD back in again and follow the instructions to set up your N3DS.

Now your NANDs are unlinked and inside the \Nintendo 3DS folder on your microSD should now be two folders with letters and numbers. This is the proof that your NANDs are unlinked.

Find the folder that does not have the \dbs folder inside (this is the folder for your SysNAND as you just formatted it), and repeat the steps with import.db and title.db as described above.

The other folder should already have the \dbs folder, because you restored your backup to the microSD already.

This is adapted from RXtools CFW coldboot full installation guide for New3DS, from Browserhax & Homemenuhax to Rxtools by ChrisN8.

At the moment, the Dec 5 Nightly is the latest version. It runs very stable on my system and also has region free patches included, meaning you don't need to take additional measures to run out of region .cia's.

You will need the following:

Latest RxTools Nightly (currently 15-12-05)

if the files are down due to high traffic, use this mirror

firmware.bin with the MD5 B99ADF0ADB279712367C06EB83BA9AE6

you will find this by googling cakesforeverywan pastebin

better double check that the MD5 sum matches, you can check this for example at onlinemd5.com

CtrBootManager by cpasjuste and my boot.cfg from this thread's attachment

Unzip the RxTools package. You only need the \rxTools folder, ignore the rest of this package.

Now open up \rxTools, create a folder called \firm and put the firmware.bin in there. Rename the file to 0004013820000002.bin

pay attention here, if you have file endings hidden in Windows (e.g. your file is called only firmware and not firmware.bin), you leave out the .bin ending when renaming it. In that case only put the numbers 0004013820000002

Now copy the \rxTools folder onto the root of your microSD.

The rxTools folder should consist of four folders now, called \firm, \lang, \sys, \theme, with \firm containing your renamed firmware file.

In the cakesforeverywan Pastebin archive you will also find a file called Slot0x25KeyX.bin. Copy it to the root of your microSD.

I am pretty sure it is not needed on Firmware 9.0 anymore but it also doesn't hurt to have it.

Now start your N3DS, set up an internet connection again, click the little wrench icon and choose to the option to change a theme.

You don't need to change it, just bring up the menu once and leave again, or change the theme if you wish.

This step is necessary to set up the theme engine, which MenuHax uses as an exploit.

Next repeat the dbs repair that was described in step 2 by going into System Settings, data management, Nintendo 3DS and repairing the database.

This is needed to be done again because you formatted your SysNAND.

Now go into Homebrew Launcher again, as it was described in step 2 - deactivate Internet, scan QR code, activate internet while browser is loading, and Homebrew Launcher will start.

This time choose MenuHax. If you want to switch on your N3DS and have it boot into EmuNAND automatically, choose Type2.

I strongly recommend that, as it makes things way more convenient. If for whatever reason you don't want that, read the following explanation:

In short, Type1 will mean you have to hold a specific button to coldboot CtrBootManager and if you don't hold it, SysNAND will boot. Type2 is the opposite - CtrBootManager will coldboot if you do not hold a specific button and only boot SysNAND if you hold the button during boot. If you want to switch on your N3DS and automatically be in EmuNAND, use Type2. I recommend Type2 and I will write the following parts of the tutorial as if you chose Type2. If you want Type1, just keep in mind that you will have to hold your button every time you boot your device

You will have to set a button now that bypasses MenuHax, just press it and touch the bottom screen to confirm. This will set up the coldboot now.

If you don't hold the button you just set during booting, MenuHax will initiate.

If you hold it while booting, SysNAND will load.

Switch off your N3DS, switch it on and your top screen should glitch and throw you directly into Homebrew Launcher. Your device is now set to coldboot a file called boot.3dsx, which loads Homebrew Launcher.

Switch your N3DS off again, put your microSD into your computer and find the boot.3dsx in the root of your microSD.

This is our entry point, you could basically put anything there that runs as a 3dsx and your N3DS would automatically start it when you switch it on.

You will switch this out with CtrBootManager. Rename the boot.3dsx on your microSD to bhbl.3dsx.

You want to add CtrBootManager now. Unzip the package and download the boot.cfg at the end of this thread under Attached Files.

This sets up CtrBootManager to show rxTools and Homebrew Menu, and starts rxTools EmuNAND (also called rxMode) if you don't press any key for three seconds.

Of course you can edit the boot.cfg to your likings, add more menu items or other CFW if you want.

Then copy boot.3dsx and boot.cfg to the root of your microSD.

Check if everything goes as it should by switching on your N3DS. After the screen glitches you'll be in CtrBootManager, showing rxTools and Homebrew Menu. If you select the first entry or wait three seconds, rxTools should boot.

The first time it will show that it's installing some stuff and the next time it will boot straight into EmuNAND.

If nothing boots, power down your device and try it again. CtrBootManager is quite failsafe though, it only freezes one out of 20 or 30 times on my device which is a very good boot rate.

If you have the device rebooting after selecting rxTools and then crashing to red/black screen, chances are you have Menuhax in your EmuNAND where it doesn't belong. To get into EmuNAND, hold your Menuhax button after selecting rxTools and once you are in EmuNAND, change themes once to remove Menuhax. Then Autoboot will work as it should.

So once your installation of rxTools finished, you are in your EmuNAND. Confirm this by going into system settings. It should now state RX-E before the version number on the top screen.

If you have any troubles running rxTools, please try the following:

Try going back to October 2nd build. For that you will need another firmware file.

First go here and download the package where it says Available here [1]. Inside is the rxTools version you need.

Now google for Reisyukaku Pastebin and download the ReiNAND CFW you find there. Inside will be a firmware.bin, which you rename to 0004013820000002orig.bin

Then you create a subfolder \data in the rxtools folder and put the firmware file in there.

It has to look like this at the end: microSD:\rxTools\data\0004013820000002orig.bin

At this point remember, if you enter system settings and leave again, your device will do a full reboot. Meaning if you do set menuhax to only boot when holding a button and you don't hold it now, this will bring you back to your SysNAND! This is again why I recommend type2 in menuhax, as it can not happen that way, it will just load up CtrBootManager again if you leave system settings.

If you ever want to install a .cia in SysNAND, for example GBA VC Games or the bluecardfix, you will have to install FBI.cia in SysNAND again. This works as described in step 2, just boot Homebrew Launcher in the Boot Manager, start Pasta, go into Homebrew Launcher again via Internet Browser exploit, open FBI and install FBI.cia. Next time you enter your SysNAND with Pasta active, it will appear as a gift, just as before.

Well, and that's it. Your N3DS will now automatically load CtrBootManager through menuhax, then boot to EmuNAND and you will be able to install .cia via FBI on your home screen. I hope this helps someone as lost as I was at the beginning to get the device running. Additionally I would like to provide some beginner's advice to help you avoid basic problems.

If you for some reason don't have FBI in your EmuNAND, because you forgot to restore your backup, accidentally installed it to destination NAND and not SD or similar, you can use this tutorial to inject FBI into Health and Safety app.

If you want to enter rxTools menu for some reason, hold L after selecting rxTools in CtrBootManager.

It is perfectly normal that 3D has a bug in rxMode, which shows you two offset images instead of a 3D image. This happens everytime you start your N3DS after it was completely shut down. Just close and open it once and it's fixed.

As for now, you can't update EmuNAND to 10.3 like you can on O3DS. The highest supported version is 9.5, if you want to go there, you can update your EmuNAND to 9.5 with sysupdater and the relevant files for your region. Check out Xenon Hacks' tutorial.

Don't change themes in SysNAND. This breaks MenuHax and you will have to set it up again.

Go into SysNAND and create three fake Internet connections. Just click manual setup, set the SSID to something that doesn't exist (like fake1, fake2, fake3) and type in any password. EmuNAND will take over those but you can change the first one to a working connection, so you will have Internet in EmuNAND but not in SysNAND. This will prevent avoidable dangers like updating your SysNAND by accident.

I would also suggest to set SysNAND and EmuNAND to different layouts so you can see at first glance where you are. Just put SysNAND to one row and EmuNAND to three rows or whatever you like.

Once your EmuNAND runs stable, make an EmuNAND backup. You can do this also with EmuNAND9 under EmuNAND Manager Options and Dump EmuNAND to EmuNAND.bin. With this done you can easily restore it in case you mess something up in EmuNAND.

If you want to switch your setup to another microSD, for example if you want a bigger one, make a backup of your EmuNAND with EmuNAND9 like described before, copy all your microSD contents to the new microSD, copy the EmuNAND backup to the new microSD and restore it with EmuNAND9.

Avoid putting your device to sleep while on EmuNAND and being connected to the internet. This can initiate an update download in the background, resulting in constant messages that ask you to update which of course you do not want to do on N3DS. If you by accident happen upon that message (like I did literally the same day I set up my N3DS), you can follow these instructions by d0k3 to get rid of it again. It's done in two minutes, but still easily avoidable.

If you have the knowledge how to do so, you could also block access to the update servers in your router. This will entirely take any chance your N3DS could ever receive an unwanted update while being in your home network, but will also block eShop access. But if you don't need that, go ahead and block them. Here are the server names.

For added security you can use TubeHax DNS to prevent update access. Find out how to set it on smealum's HomebrewLauncher page at the point that says YouTube.

Game updates are also available as .cia files on the pages and boards where you can find games. Just install them with FBI like you would install a game and your game is instantly updated and ready to go online again.

DS Games, and thus also DS flashcards, do not work in rxTools EmuNAND at the moment! They will just crash to a black screen. You will have to boot to SysNAND for that. Could be that this gets fixed again in future versions.

GBA VC needs AGB_FIRM patch to work. For N3DS this file is called 0004013820000202.cia and you can get a patched version on that iso site. Install it to SysNAND. For N3DS, GBA VC games will only work in SysNAND at the moment, not in EmuNAND.

If you want to launch Homebrew Launcher out of your EmuNAND, use this .cia Launcher. User WallK wrote a little tutorial on how to edit it so that it loads homebrew launcher. The file you want to start will be called bhbl.3dsx.

Whew, I recently recived my N3DS, and will be doing this guide, however I do have a series of questions.
Being very familiar with CFW on the PSP back in the old days, this still seems like a lot of work to get going, anyway here goes:
How does online play work if I play a "backup" 3ds ROM?
Also, as I have a bunch of retail games like Zelda: TriForce Heroes, that I enjoy playing with my friends, I would like to avoid being banned from online play (looking at you Xbox 360), but will hacking the 3DS have any effect on using it with legal game cartridges?

I use the browserhax for the time being. I also saved some files that will allow me to coldboot into HBL when necessary but I followed a different guide, so I'm not sure if I'd be of much help here.
