As you may or may not know, www.snesmusic.org has a VAST collection of SPC (SNES Music ripped from the cart) files. I would KILL to see an SPC Player on the Wii. I have no coding experience or else I would be working on it right now. I think that a lot of people would use it if more people knew about SPCs and the like. It doesn't stop with SPC either, there are PSX rips of music, NES, Genesis, you name it, I bet theres an archive of its music somewhere.

Mainly I am pleading for someone to make a game music player, or just an SPC player. Even if no one does anything, everyone should check out snesmusic's collection, and listen to some awesome sounds from the SNES!

I am not a coder, but I know that many game sound players (E.G. GSF) rip the sound core out of emulators and use it as a backend (like how the Linux GSF player used the VBA sound core at the heart of the program). It shouldn't be hard if the right developers are willing.

playing SPC's is quite complicated cause they require complete SPU emulation and can not easily be converted to raw audio.

All that aside, I figure if the PSP has an SPC Player, why can't the Wii? Does the Wii not have the power needed for conversion? Or is it just something that would be hard to write?

Is it open source? If so link to it and someone may try porting it (Or you could learn to code and try yourself?, honestly not a dig BTW). But I think the reason is probably no ones bothered about it so far. Old game music is a niche market, even among retro game fans. Most would just play the game to hear it.

I don't know if its open source or not, the only links I can find lead to downloads of the program, no home page or anything.

.spc or .vgm (genesis music file) playback is not more complicated than emulator themselves, it's basically the same, restricted to audio chips only.
In fact, this can easily be added in emulators themselves, as long as the file format is well documented.

This hasn't been done yet, that's all.

Well, what needs to be done for this to happen? What can I, a single user with no coding experience, do, to make this happen

I mean, someone need to CODE it:

- interface for reading music files
- interface with the sound core (basically, call sound chips write functions as a traditionnal ROM program would do)
- sound output

sound core emulation being already implemented in emulators, as well as sound playback, the only difficult part would be to read the game music file, decrypt the command, send the command to the emulator interface which would update sound buffers and finally playback the soundbuffer.

I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol

I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
