Upstream supply chain expects new Nintendo games console to achieve 10-12 million unit shipments in 2016
Aaron Lee, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 30 November 2015]
Nintendo's new game console is scheduled to enter mass production at the end of the first quarter 2016 and despite the fact that the Japan-based company is targeting to ship 20 million units in 2016, the device's upstream component suppliers expect shipments to only reach around 10-12 million units. Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) reportedly has been chosen to manufacture the device, but the company declined to comment on its clients or orders.

The new console is estimated to enter mass shipments in the second quarter. In addition to Foxconn, suppliers such as Foxconn Technology, Macronix, Pixart Imaging, Coxon Precise Industrial, Nishoku Technology, Delta Technology, Lingsen Precision Industries and Jentech will also supply components for the device.

Digitimes Research expects Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 to achieve shipments of 13 and 18 million units, respectively in 2016, and if Nintendo's new console is able to ship 10 million units in the year, the company will then be able to maintain its competitiveness in the market.

Seems like they're giving up on the Wii U completely. It's not even lasted very long at all.

Another stupid post on hardware.
One advantage of AMD over other companies is that AMD is one of the few that have access to x86 and arm instructions legally. NVidia's Denver (k1 for nexus 9 and the new tegra "Parker" yet to be released that operate at twice the speed of x1 in graphics) was designed to run both x86 and arm but neither AMD nor intel agree, but AMD can. That makes k12 potentially able to run x86 applications natively (since the core is custom), that is, to support some less demanding games on the NX console, if it goes with Zen. To the new patient someone is supplying Nintendo with some link at least as fast as last gen ram interface (One with experience of building server but also offer goods at low price), which again seems to be AMD.
I personally think we will get a updated tablet controller with its own processor and storage (with the level of design that Nintendo may have trouble accomplishing right now you can stuff full/hybrid water cooling system, huge battery and laptop class chipset in the Wii u gamepad)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And what will a vastly improved gc controller look like?

I like how they say "we learned earlier this year nintendo plans on launching its Nintendo NX in July 2016", when the links it provides really is just someone saying "It could be as early as july 2016, we have no idea!"

That's what we like to call "really bad journalism". I say you can strike that from being "official". Most GBAtemp threads are more legit than that guy's journalism.

If final production *starts* to takes place in May or June, then it's far more likely to expect it in November. IF that's when production happens. Do people think it takes just a month from the start of final production of the hardware to being on store shelves? I'm still expecting a fall 2017 release, but fall 2016 wouldn't be super weird.

Remember when some guy said the ten games to be on nx which is just a wish list and does not even have Dragon Quest, which is the only official game right now?
I highly doubt Nintendo would even talk about spec in 2016. When did Sony/ Microsoft unveiled about their spec exactly?

Yeah, I'd like to personally shoot down the "July 2016" date, I've seen nothing besides this article even claiming to have a release date pegged on a specific month

They haven't even shown the NX publicly yet.

I would expect an E3 or E3-centered Direct showing in 2016, followed by a worldwide 2017 release. That's usually how they do things, yes?

The Wii U still has a little time left, despite being Nintendo's worst selling home console.

Like this.

The pro controller is decent but the gamecube controller is much better. The pro controller could really have used analog triggers. The buttons and right stick are in really awkward positions for most games and should be swapped. Its also a little light and could use some more weight imo.

I dunno, I like the Wii U Pro controller a lot, an obvious improvement would be analog triggers however. It works really great for twin-stick shooters, too. But the GC controller overall feels a bit more comfortable in hand. That said, the Wii U Pro is still a great controller.

I like where the buttons are, because I can play Classic games SNES-style, with my thumbs touching each other. :)

Never liked the Cube's slidy analog triggers myself.

Nintendo HAS said that the completed version of the NX will be on display at E3

Nintendo invents a gamepad built from a touchscreen

A recent patent application envisions a game controller where a touchscreen is the main interface.

Nintendo has said precious little about its plans for the NX (other than that it won't be like a Wii U), but it might have hinted at what's coming through some recent paperwork. The console maker has filed for a patent on a gamepad design where a touchscreen would cover the entire front panel. You'd still have familiar elements like analog sticks (poking through the display) and shoulder buttons, but the usual front-facing buttons would be replaced by context-aware touch. The move would give you the adaptability of a smartphone interface with the primary controls you're used to in a TV system -- you could even use the controller on its side, or get visual effects when you press buttons. It wouldn't require a gigantic body like the Wii U's gamepad, either, and a card slot could take game data directly.

This is just an application, and there's no certainty that Nintendo will use this design any time soon, if at all. However, as The Verge notes, the would-be patent does line up with rumors that Nintendo will use Sharp's free-form displays in a future product. Theoretically, this could be the technology behind the NX's standard-issue gamepad. Moreover, the Wall Street Journal has heard that the NX would include a "mobile unit" that could be used separately from the main console. Given the presence of that card slot, it's possible that you could play titles solely on the gamepad and take it with you -- who needs separate TV and handheld consoles when your NX is both at the same time? The finished machine could be far less exciting, but it's evident that Nintendo has at least been thinking about non-traditional hardware.

That would be fucking awful.

I'm sorry, but it would.

There's a reason why people like buttons; you've got the tactile feeling, you've got the precision, and you don't have to hover your damn thumbs above the pad in order to prevent accidental button pushes.

No thank you.

Honestly, this could be REALLY cool, but ONLY if they actually keep buttons and don't go for a touch only interface

Isn't the best part about gaming on a smartphone the crippled controls? Don't you love it when your hands cover 1/3 of the screen? Isn't having no tactile response more immersive and responsive? Isn't being unable to replace a controller with better options due to the fact that every game will have different controls adding a ton to the overall experience?

Dear Nintendo,
If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it.
Signed, someone who hated the Wiimote with a burning passion

I know it's very possible (probably even likely) that nintendo won't go this route for the NX, but if they do it is a no buy from me unless I can completely avoid even owning the touchscreen device. I want nothing to do with it at all. Stop reinventing the wheel Nintendo, there's no reason.

The NX is in the shape of a Boomerang that's kinetic powered to save the environment, you gotta keep throwing it to keep it running, which helps you exercise and keep healthy.

Basically you throw the NXarang and then play the game, while its flying out and and back, you can play freely, when it comes back, you can either catch it with one hand or pause the game and catch it, but you gotta throw it again, or the system loses power and shuts down.

Its the ultimate, healthy, energy saving, earth friendly gaming machine for the happy go lucky earth loving generation. Any excess energy the NX generates is sent to Africa to help power schools for children.

Nah, seriously, its just a Wii U that you can take on the go. That's it.

Except that they could use Tactus's shape shifting touchscreens along with Sharp's free-form displays.

If that happen I see it working.
