Last E3, Reggie Fils-Aime pretty much said that Mario games sell consoles. As such...they included a Mario game for launch: New Super Mario Bros U (trailer in link).

Historically, I have no doubt in my mind that it's correct. Lots of families will pick up the basic model and NSMBU. That combination will probably better than the prepacked ZombiiU bundle, but I digress.

Because Ubisoft also has a platformer in line. One that isn't so different in terms of gameplay (running and jumping). Of course I'm talking about Rayman Legends (again: trailer in link).

Despite the success of the Rabbits games, Rayman isn't as well known as, say, Mario or Sonic. But Rayman origins was GOOD. Better than NSMBW, if you ask me, but that's just my opinion. Wacky setup, awesome difficulty curve, tight controls and (perhaps above all else) an awesome soundtrack.

Meanwhile, nintendo seems to start cashing in on the Mario platformer idea. Mario 3D Land and NSMB2 on the 3DS, and now NSMBU. Am I really the only one who is having difficulties seeing the difference between those games? If you had told me that the NSMBU trailer was a fanmade mod of NSMBW, I would have believed it (for comparison, check out the Newer super mario bros trailer).

When digging down deeper, I can only find things that further my already formed conclusion (no, I'm not unbiassed here). Rayman legends has so much things to do for the gamepad holding player I'm having doubts you can even PLAY the game singleplayer in some levels. It switches foreground and background, syncs music to your speed (not sure how that'll work) and looks plain out FUN.
On the Mario front, we're supposed to get excited about yet another new suit for Mario, the ability to play as your mii, the entire world being on one large map and helping players by putting blocks everywhere (won't that make the game incredibly easy for the one playing Mario? And pretty boring for the one on the gamepad?). Oh, and achievements. Which Rayman origins already had (speed runs in every level and racing minigames to unlock an incredibly hard & fun sidelevel).

Despite the fun that Rayman origins was, NSMBW outsold it largely. Things popularity and marketing can do, y'know. But I can't help being curious: what will you guys get with your wiiU? :)

IMPORTANT EDIT: as it turns out, Rayman legends is delayed to early 2013 (source).
Feel free to keep discussing, but remember that it has become pure speculation (as in "what I would have bought if both were launch titles...").

I say: New Super Mario Bros. u, because I have a few personal reasons for that.

a) I can't stand Rayman to be honest, I'll still get the game asap tho
b) I really really really love Mario Games just FUCK YOU Mario before everything except for Zelda.
c) Mario Platformers are more fun for me to play..!

Neither on my part, never been a fan of the mechanics on rayman and NSMB is just lazy game making, sure it'll be fun but there re-using resources that created 4-5 years ago and that is lazy. I am toying with getting a Wii U at launch and if I do it'll be ZombieU for me

Neither, not at first anyway. I didn't really like Origins for some reason (although it was pretty good) and the NSMB series can die for all I care. It looks like U at least adds some more stuff compared to the differences between NSMB and NSMBWii, but I'm probably not getting a Mario game until a 3D one like Galaxy appears.

Origins was superb, so of the two, I'd say that's the better choice.

If the Wii U was getting the next true entry to the Mario games (the successor to Galaxy 1 and 2), then I'd have more trouble making that call. It isn't, though, so I don't.

Neither, but not because I don't want to play 2D games, just that I'm not thrilled for NSMBU or Rayman. Probably going to pick up the Nintendo Land + Zombi U preorder pack and then let it sit in my room for a year before some titles come out, but I said that with the 3DS and I've still not got any games for that since launch. That may just be because I have no reason to play handholds now I'm older.

If I'm not mistaken, Rayman Legends has the same type of multiplayer support that NSMB Wii and U do. Personally, I might grab Rayman Legends first, just to have a "change of pace" for multiplayer.

That said, I think you should grab both if you can.

New Super Mario Bros. U isn't a true entry in the 2D Mario games?
