Whatever their reason, it was big enough to warrent a revision. Hopefully it hasn't squashed too many bugs. That, and hopefully they fixed any actual problems there might have been with the hardware.

i highly doubt any changes like that mostly expect bootrom exploits to be patched

No. This is a development device, those always have different model number than the retail units (such was true with 3DS with the Panda units)
