Has anyone successfully downgraded from 9.9 US N3DSXL to 9.2? I'm seeing a lot of successes from 10.3 down to 9.2, not so much on the 9.9 to 9.2.
I'd let you know but I'm getting the same "Failed to get CIA info!" error. I hope Steveice10 releases something to fix this in the morning.

What version did you downgrade from? I have a fresh hyrule n3ds that I just unboxed on 9.9, but I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow for some more reliable information.
I had to upgrade to 10.3 and use menuhax loader to launch Steveice10 updated sysUpdater and after many failed attempts to load cia info it started and lucky for me it worked. On 9.2.0.20U and currently setting up emunand using gateway. Good luck if you decide to take the plunge. I was extremely nervous and without a nand backup. I now have a nand backup made with gateway.

Initially got the couldnt find cia thing, solved it by downloading the files through browser. N3ds downgraded second time like a charm.

What did you do initially? Download it through MegaSync or something?

Yes, downloaded with the MEGA SyncDownloader. Even though it had the same MD5 Checksum, it gave the error. That or I just got lucky the second time
Hmmm, well that is certainly interesting. Maybe I should try redownloading? Eh, I'm going to bed but I'll try in the morning.

I'm partially willing to try the downgrade, but along with the fear of bricking my Majora's Mask N3DSXL, which is easily overcome in the name of science, these things bother me a lot:

  • What happens to my badges? Will they interfere at all with the downgrade, or will they turn into useless extdata? In that regard, is there any way to restore them later? I could dump extdata and use a hex editor, sure, but even if I downgrade, emunand on N3DS only goes up to 9.5 for now, which I don't think has support for badges. I worked hard on those badges, mate. They're cool.
  • After I downgrade, lose my badges and everything, set up emunand, use sysupdater to get it up to 9.5, etc., can I just dump my games and install them to emunand after unlinking nands? What about savedata, can I dump that too?
  • Apart from the encryption thing going on with 9.6+ N3DS, how unlikely is it to get CFW working on 10.3? If I remember correctly(pfft, as if), the anonymous pastebin that circulated for a while contained offsets/memory addresses to be used for patching signature checks, which is the basis for current CFW. Is it a case of trying to find a needle in a haystack with current FW or are there any conceivable ways of working around that?
I'm probably going to downgrade my O3DSXL and try CFW, but for now I won't touch my MM N3DSXL.

This is what I get when I downgrade from 10.3 - 9.2 on my US n3DS XL: http://puu.sh/mj2bp/67b75a33b8.jpg
Anyone have any idea on how to fix this? Luckily I've been able to use safe mode to upgrade back to 10.3 in all my attempts so far.

If you are getting "an error has occurred" after "successfully" downgrading, and you used HomeMenuHax as your entry point, try the following:
BACKUP and REMOVE payload files from SD card root. BACKUP and REMOVE homemenu extdata (/Nintendo 3DS/<a bunch of numbers and letters>/<a bunch of numbers and letters>/extdata/00000000/0000008f). Insert SD card back into 3DS. Hold L+R+UP+A before powering on, power on, and continue to hold the buttons.

This got me into recovery mode.

once back on 10.3 try again... make sure you got the right files

Downgraded N3DS XL USA from 10.3 to 9.2 without a single issue.

Loaded from Menuhax, straight to sysupdater, made sure text wasn't garbled, held Y until the CIA check message occurred.
After the 10 second mark the screen went black, I pulled the SD Card and it rebooted automatically to the welcome messages for "updating" my system to 9.2

I did the same process on my o3DS XL US on 9.7 -> 9.2 and no issues

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
