Unfortunately, software cannot damage hardware, only other software. Hardware can damage hardware. Because the Flash carts have no movable parts, aside from the SD Micro slot, there is no possible way to damage them physically. Not unless you throw it around and smash it. Now, Nintendo can release a firmware update that damages the bootloader for the flash carts when detected, but all those cart developers have to do is update them so they hide from the detection system. Thus the vicious cycle continues.

Use the DSi file. You'll want the _aio folder, the akmenu.nds file and the dsi update file on the card. Total of two files and one folder.
You can have other stuff there, too, and it won't matter, it won't affect it...but those two files and one folder have to be there.

If you're gonna do the "try it" routine at a game shop, go on a Saturday afternoon when they are especially busy and you might get away with it....douchebag or no douchebag at the counter.

I STILL say that you ought to look into getting yourself a used DS Lite, at least...for this very purpose. You see, the Acekards will ALWAYS WORK on the DSLite and there's not a goddam thing Nintendo can ever do about that.

Whereas with the DSi, you'll be in constant battle with them every month or two, whenever they feel like screwing with your system again....and then you gotta wait for an update again, if an update is even possible. whereas if you also have a DS Lite...then, while you're waiting for an update, you can still use your card on the DS Lite.

Honestly, though, I just don't see what the big deal is with the DSi. I thought it was pretty good...the better sound was nice, the extra screen space was nice...the soft-reset was nice....but all the rest of it...who cares? The camera's shitty. The three things I just cited as being really good about the DSi....are not, IMNSHO, worth the aggravation of a constant battle with Nintendo over using Flashcarts.

I just want to do what I want to do and be left alone. Nintendo won't do that.

I predict Nintendo will eventually find a way to literally physically damage cards remotely...and use it to destroy cards instead of merely disabling them for a little while. I don't plan on being one of those who fall victim to that.

DS Lite forever for me! Screw the DSi!!!
Thanks.

As for the whole DSi ordeal, I wasn't too knowledgeable on the flashcard stuff so went with DSi as it was only £50 more expensive and I thought I could use the camera, which I do...I disagree with you that it's crap, it's actually pretty nice quality/ convenience wise, as my phone camera is even worse (I hardly upgrade my mobile phone).

As for the constant battle with Nintendo, I was REALLY stupid with this one. I was just messing about with the DSi at like 5am and saw the update and went "oh ok lets get it" and got myself into all kinds of trouble.
For future, I probably won't even update the DSi. I don't use the DSi Store and it's not like they are going to bring a feature that is so irresistible you can't live without it. So once my flashcard is working again (if I have the balls to do the shop trick), I'll just leave it as it is, as there won't be a need to update the DSi FW.

I can definitely see how DS Lite is much more convenient for all this but DSi is the same if you don't update the FW (which I won't).

Also, if I can't be bothered/ too worried about doing the shop trick and decide to buy a new card, will it even ship with the 1.4 update?
Because if it ships without it, I basically have another useless card.

It won't ship with any firmware, you have to download it.
And right now, all that exists is the current fix. The original card firmware, followed by the update, which you will need a DS Lite, or a non 1.4 DSi to do. Keep your old card. Just update it. But you'll need a DS Lite or a 1.3 DSi to do it.

Wow she really hates the DSi. Must be too lazy to wait for the Acekard to do a 30 second update.

No. You have utterly failed to understand anything I say.
I do NOT hate the DSi. What I hate is the very concept that Nintendo can, at any time it chooses, remotely reprogram to alter it's functioning on an aftermarket basis.

What I hate is the fact that I feel I do not own the device if, at any time, and on an aftermarket basis...the original manufacturer can remotely reprogram to alter functioning, without FULLY DISCLOSING everything that the said reprogramming would do.

I hate the sleazy way Nintendo went about this.

And I don't think the DSi is enough of an improvement over the DS Lite to warrant such an invasion of MY product that I bought, in a specific condition.

What I hate is the concept of not really owning the device. Not MY problem if it does something they didn't want me to find out about, and I found out. My argument is all about the PRINCIPLE of the thing.

Nothing to do with laziness or anything else. If you bothered to READ...you'd note I have already updated my cards, and even went so far as to give my mom the DSi...along with an Acekard that works in the DS1...stocked with the sort of games that she would like.

And before you ask, everything on that card is stuff we already own....or homebrew. I even threw a copy of the Holy Bible on my mom's card, because I thought she would enjoy that.

Like I said, it is not the DSi that I hate. It is Nintendo's ability to reprogram it remotely that I hate...and I hate the sleazy way they didn't FULLY DISCLOSE what the update would do.

Why would companies LOSE money for not releasing such an update? You buying a new cart is more likely to net them more money than updating a product they already have your money for.
For once we agree.

And I seriously doubt that anyone is going to break their back doing anything further at this time...until Nintendo does something to screw up the current fixes.

Folks who are waiting for an update that is such that it can be immediately booted off an updated DSi...and not with a DS Lite the first time...I hope they are not holding their breath.

You mean they could not find a way to, say, short out the cards so that they totally don't work?

Because I suspect Nintendo would do exactly that, if they could find a way to.

You're saying Nintendo should not try to stop piracy? And it's sleazy to release a software update, just like Microsoft, Apple, Sony and many others do?

No I think Nintendo are totally within their right to stop piracy, if they tell us or not. It's not like Apple put in the description of their new firmware that it's going to stop Jailbreakers for 3 days, do they? Stop over reacting.

Software can damage hardware. Constantly programming the boot of the flash card will probably do it. Once the flash has worn out then you won't be able to do anything with it. Not saying they will do it.

I'm not over-reacting.
I am stating an opinion.

If you don't agree with my opinion, fine...you don't have to be an ass about disagreeing. Just agree to disagree and move on.

I do not believe any manufacturer should have the right to change the functioning of any device, on an aftermarket basis...without FULL DISCLOSURE of EVERYTHING said update will do, so that the end user may then make an informed choice about whether or not they WANT such an update, okay?

Meanwhile, if they wanted to close off the DSi Store to anyone who did not accept the update, well, fine, they are within their rights to do that...you then know that a consequence of refusing the update is that you may not enter the DSi Store.

I have no problem with that. Because I knew that, and then would make an informed choice.

It's all about the principle of the thing. It's about MY right as a consumer and as a user...to make informed choices.

I think you are disagreeing with me just in order to be an ass. Well, find someone else to harass, just agree to disagree and get the hell out of my face, okay?

Sorry to butt in but don't you think you break the 'honest' line between you and Nintendo when you download their games via a flashkart?

At that point you are not a 'customer' perse that Nintendo should go all out to please and respect, but an 'enemy' (for lack of a better word) of Nintendo, and rightly so.

However perhaps you are right that they can at least ut it in release notes, as for example Sony takes the time to put in release notes "Security enhancements" when they update just to stop custom FWs from working.
Granted days later that update gets hacked as well but that's beside the point

Anyway just an update: No reply from AceKArd guys yet. Still in StandBy. It hasn't been that long yet though so it's all good.
I'm still fairly optimistic something will come along.

No actually, Nintendo wouldn't consider him as an enemy because he can buy whatever on earth he wants. The real enemy to Nintendo is the acekard company itself.

When you make a choice to support AceKard, you are voluntarily choosing NOT to support Nintendo.
Unless you buy some games and download others but that's not the way Nintendo is going to see it.

You are right AceKArd is the snake's head though but users of AceKard shouldn't try to act innocent or think that Nintendo should treat them with the same regards as their honest customers.
You are going behind their back, they have every right to go behind yours. Not to mention what you are doing is illegal whilst what Nintendo is doing, although my be 'bad practice' is perfectly fine.

EDIT: Anyway sorry for the off-topicness.

See, but this is where I disagree.

Because, what I am doing does not harm Nintendo in the slightest...in fact, some things may even HELP them.

I teruly DO use my flashcard only for homebrew, making backups of games I have already bought...and the occasional, very rare download of a game I have not yet bought, but am considering buying.

If I like it, I'll buy it, and keep the backup on the Acekard. If I don't like it, then I won't buy it, nor will I keep it on the card.

I do not think it is unreasonable for me to want to use homebrew applications, make backups of stuff I have already bought, and to occasionally want to try a game before I drop 50 bucks only to find out it sucks and then get only 20 bucks back when I trade it in.

I think it IS unreasonable for Nintendo to assume everyone who uses a flashcart is doing so solely to engage in pirating games, especially new releases. Yet that is exactly what they are assuming, and they are grinding up innocent people in the gears of their machine, built on assumptions that are not universally true.

Yeah, I know, a lot of people DO use karts for the purpose of pirating games....but then go after THEM and leave us people alone.

I have said before, and I'll say again, here for the record...I'd have zero use for an Acekard if:

A - Nintendo would put into the DSiWare Shop...all the titles I want...I'd happily buy them
B - There was also a way to put homebrew applications/games on the same machine. I'd even pay for THOSE...if I found them good enough.

I use my card for purposes that either are legal...or ought to be legal. For personal convenience. NOT for pirating.

Yet, because Nintendo over-reacts to the problem of piracy...the homebrew community suffers...and legitimate users like me, who do only things that are legal or oughta be legal (since they harm no-one) suffer...and that is what I object to.

As an example, I mentioned that, among other things, I put a homebrew application on my mom's card, that she uses with my old DSi (updated to 1.4) for the Holy Bible!! Now what on Earth is wrong with wanting something handy like that for your Bible Study class, which my mom is in? Who is harmed by that? Nobody.

Who is harmed by me backing up my investment, and making copies of games I already bought, so that
A - I don't have to re-buy them if they break
B - I don't have to truck 50 or more teeny cartidges around with me.
Answer: nobody. I already bought the games.

Who is harmed by me occasionally downloading a game I am considering buying...but would like to try first? Nobody.
Because if I like it, I am going to buy it. and if I don't, then I'm not going to keep it.
So I save fifty bucks buy not buying a game that sucks once in a while.
Nintendo makes money by me buying a game I otherwise would not have bought...sometimes.

What in the HELL is wrong with that?

I know, say what you will but may God strike me dead with a bolt of lightning if I am not telling the God's Honest here, that is ALL I use the card for. Stuff I already bought, stuff I'm considering buying, Homebrew...and majorly old stuff no one actually cares about, like Atari, and some NES and Genesis stuff that I already bought and just would like to play on my DS.

Again, I just fail to see where anything I'm doing harms anyone, or why it ought to be illegal.

And I fail to see why Nintendo should be allowed to assume I am a pirate, and stop me from doing what I do...just because others DO use the carts for those purposes.

NOT EVERYONE DOES.

Let me try another way of making my case, and try not to be as wordy.

Today, I went thru the GBA homebrew Games section, and downloaded 25 new games to try out.
Put them on my Supercard, I did.

How's that hurt Nintendo? It doesn't. Granted there's nothing Nintendo can do about Supercrds, because GBA SP's can't be remotely updated.

But here's another thing I do with a fair amount of regularity...I go to eBay and buy games USED, from other people.

One, because it's cheaper.
Two, because most of the titles I want are no longer on store shelves, as they are not "new releases."

When I buy games on eBay, Nintendo makes no money off it.

Yet, you don't hear Nintendo screaming about eBay, do you?

Come to think of it...
You can buy used games at GameStop. Even some fairly new release games.
I have even had a choice, before, between a new cart...and a used cart, of the same game, in the same GameStop...and bought the Used one because it was cheaper.

When I buy the used one, Nintendo makes zilch off me.

Yet, Gamestop makes money off me, because they paid someone ten bucks in trade on that used game...and sell it to me for twenty.

And you don't hear Nintendo screaming about Gamestop, do you?

No, you only hear Nintendo scream about flashcarts, because they can go after powerless individuals. When it's a big corporation like eBay or Gamestop...Nintendo says nothing.

Why doesn't Nintendo say anything about Gamestop making money by selling used carts for more than THEY paid for them?

Because they are MR BIG CORPORATION...that's why.

I say
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!

EDIT: Seriously, folks, I say we quit derailing this thread...and make a new thread to discuss this. I'm going to make it right now and post the link here. Then we can discuss it THERE, and leave this thred to be for it's original purpose.

ok back on topic:
let's estimate how long will it take for acekard team to come up with the official release.
I go with 1 week

Future new card selling? or just a way to keep our hope up and continue to buy more stuff?
Well, that is over a month and a half old...and dated before the fix came out.
I say that "Danny" is what we are going to get.

Most of us can deal with "Danny"

Either we did not update our DSi's...or we had access to a DSLite, and were able to make our cards work again.

I think those of you holding out for something other than "Danny" are going to be waiting a very long time.

Yeah I'm starting to get that feeling

They still haven't replied to my e-mail I've sent on 8th September regarding another fix for 1.4 other than "Danny" and if they have anything in the works.
Of 3 e-mails I've sent them in my lifetime, this is the first they didn't reply to so yeah, I guess they aren't planning anything so we still gotta wait I guess...But for what?
unsure.gif

If no fix is planned and the next time they update the card is to respond to another DSi FW update, we still can't update our cards because we are still going to need what we need now but don't have (DSi before 1.4 and/or DSLite).

Then GET a DS Lite.
You can grab 'em off e-Bay, or Gamestop, and similar places sell them used for like 69 bucks.

I know ya might not wanna part with it, but, hey...you want your fricken card to work or not?

P.S if you were anywhere near me, in location, I'd rent ya the use of one of MY DS Lites.

Hell, maybe I ought start up a side business....

dude why rent a ds(or buy new one)? you can buy some other flash card or buy the same card with 1.4 applied on it already.
It's much cheaper and good for the future.

many ppl buy 2nd card, I vote ak2i +m3i0
