As many rumors prior to Nintendo's announcement suggested, the firm did actually intend to launch the 3DS this year. But this plan was postponed over concerns that demand would far outstrip supply.
During a recent investors call, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained: "When we made the original financial forecasts for this fiscal year, we thought that it would be desirable to launch Nintendo 3DS by the end of this calendar year." And wouldn't we all have loved that?
Alas, Nintendo instead announced a February 26 launch for Japan, and penciled in US/UK launches for March 2011.
Iwata reasons the delay. "The developments are making progress, and we have been proceeding ahead in order to start mass production. By now, however, we have come to understand that, if we launched it this calendar year, it would be difficult to produce a sufficient amount."
He added: "Also, in terms of the completion level of the product, we believe that it will reach the most satisfactory level by our standards if we will launch it on the date we just announced."
Makes sense. We just wish Nintendo had started churning out those bad boys a little sooner so we could have found one in our Christmas stockings. Oh well...
