Why does this site constantly get sponsored by product key companies...

More importantly has anyone actually been fucking dumb enough and bought something from these shitty companies?
And that's one of the main reasons why I don't like using GBATemp on mobile that much. The adverts can even make the page move up and down constantly, and the products are fucking useless as well.

Some of these ads I get are straight up sexual as well, and thanks to the site going up and down, I may accidentally click on these ads. Great.

To be honest at first I was annoyed about those key website ads clogging my notifications since I have notifs for new posts in news enabled, but then I realised it must be giving gbatemp a lot of money to put them there, meaning our beloved forum can remain independent and keep running the best it can.

True but still no need to whore the temp out. They could go and actually find useful sites to sponsor the temp.

Good luck finding those. Just like YouTube sponsorships, you don't get much choice, as always the SAME (kinds of) companies try to sponsor you.

I remember when gbatemp was sponsored by some DS flashcart site and there were ads for it on like every thread page
At least that was a product that actually made sense to be on the site.

Sometimes, I get booted from 2FA wanting to make sure I'm me every month. It's during those times I see ads on the site, and gosh dang holy crap, they suck. Like, they actually are awful and make the site hard to use. But it's not like the admins go out of their way to find the worst ads, it's just an unfortunate result of whatever the ad service decides to pump out. Luckily, the admins are also good at responding to reported ads.

As for the sponsorship stuff, it's because you don't just walk up to a sponsorship company and go "plz moni". I've tried to reach out, hoping we could net something better than Windows key sites, but surprisingly, they're pretty much the best you can get, outside of companies that want far more spam than we're willing to put up with, aka pay-per-referrals or biweekly posts.

We've tried to reach out to companies that also are more in-line with our audiences likes, such as PlayAsia or BBTS, but even then people cry about it because they act like one sponsored post is going to actually ruin their lives lol. Add onto the fact that it's just not monetarily worth it, either, and you come crawling back to the Windows key sites again because they've got money that will keep the site running.

Not to mention, Raid, Nord, or other likely candidates prefer YouTube sponsors over site sponsorships and would either require giant banner ads or have tightened their purses due to corona. It's not as easy as people like to think.

/detailed answer for an eof post

EDIT: There's always the Patreon, which is the best support (and gives ad free + sponsor free viewing!!!) but it's also totally understandable if you can't afford to do so. So if you love the site and use it daily, then yeah, maybe adblock is best, even if it hurts revenue. The community matters a lot, and there's nothing worse than people struggling to use a site they like because of crappy ads.

Again, ads are double-edged sword. An necessary evil. But to be honest, if some ads is all that it takes for this website to operate, then I'll gladly take that. Its annoying sometimes, but if the alternative is having the website shut down due to a lack of funds then they could be far worse compromises that could be made in order to maintain GBATemp. I still don't think that means selling out the website, I just see it as GBATemp trying to maintain itself. But then again, just because I understand the necessity of ads does not I mean I have to like it. But again, it is what it is.

@Chary the thing that somewhat annoys me is the Microsoft have pretty much said that such sites as the one you guys are currently sponsored by are selling the keys illegally and that if Microsoft detects that you are using one of the keys they will deactivate it. Does the site have any proof from the current sponsors that they are an official Microsoft partner? And the keys are legit.

If the site doesn't have any proof then why is a site that doesn't allow pirated material sponsored by a site selling pirated material?

That would be Thug who would know. He’s in contact with them. From what he’s shared, I’m pretty sure he said they were legit and could prove it, else “we’d have proof to stop using them”

That being the case I would question them why and how the keys are discounted which breaches the terms of them being an official partner and how they can sell them at the same price around the world which as you can see in the article linked above is also against Microsofts own rules. If they are legit then fair play to them but they just seem to be breaking alot of the Microsoft official partner rules.
