N2DS has 800px in software but doesn’t have 800px on the LCD, and O2DS has 800px on the LCD but doesn’t have 800px in software... my brain has now died.
Are you sure that's right? I know for certain the n2DS has the hardware 800px because I've used Robz's hori-hd demo app and the TWilight Updater on mine and the difference is pretty clear, I assume the o2DS doesn't have 800px in hardware because it actually just has one large LCD for both screens iirc

The screen for the original 2DS is one screen.

Question relating to scaling: on non-N2DS models, couldn’t you use the double horizontal resolution to make the image (on the horizontal axis on the top screen only) sharper? (For those who will scream about the O2DS, it has the same 800x240 resolution on the top screen of the 3DS, but the N2DS drops every other vertical pixel)
Afaik, the top screen on the original 2ds is 240*400, so it cannot display 800px, only 400px. All the other systems in the 3ds family have a 240*800 top screen tho, so these can display 800px.

Oh, okay. What's the GPU patch doing again?

It's using the GPU to upscale the image instead of the capture card's built-in upscaler. It looks way better, but for some people it's way too blurry and not worth the compromise.

Edit: I’m dumb, got the New and the Old mixed up (my brain must actually be dead)

Pretending you didn't mix up the original "toast" 2DS with the rest of the models, it is possible.

In fact, this is the reason why GPU scale + widescreen broke, because they need special cases for the mode800 patch if enabled.
Sadly I haven't had much luck with getting it to fully work, and unfortunately I have ran out of time, so I can't even work on it even if I wanted.

Here is how it looks like:

Hey mate, cheers on the all that this thing can do. It’s pretty amazing to think that my 3DS can play these games with more screen space. It’s exciting.

Is there any way to restrict widescreen mode to only affecting the games that support it?

Past TWiLight Menu++ versions have done that, but didn't work correctly for some users.

The screen filter is applied to TWL_FIRM itself, so nothing else will be modified.

sorry im confused, is that the twilight menu loader? and after setting the filter all ds roms loaded from the twilightmenu would load with the same screen upscaler?

Somebody please tell me what's the first thing to do cause i don't get it at all

You need to hack and CFW your 3DS (you can search for it on the internet how to do it), and after that you need to install TWPatch.cia into your 3DS, it'll show up in the Home Menu.

After that you can just use the + Control Pad to move the cursor up and down, but instead of A you hold START.

Before the patch will work, you'll have to turn off your 3DS, wait until the blue Power LED turns off, then press and keep pressing SELECT, press Power button, and hold SELECT until the screen turns on. If you did the 3DS hacking and CFW right, you should have an option to "Enable external FIRM loading". Go there, press A to make it an X, and press START to save.

Now when you launch a DS game, it should have the filter you selected!

Sorry for the late reply. I've done following your instructions above. But the widescreen options in Twl settings were removed. Did I do something wrong? Anyway thank you for the reply

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
