Simple guide to install cIOS on vWii + backup NAND and keys

Simple guide to install d2x cIOS on vWii + backup NAND and keys
Last update: April 29th 2016
Still a valid hacking procedure as of September 2016.
(see Changelog at the bottom of the post)

What does it do?:
This guide shows you how to install cIOS into vWii (aka the Wii-mode of Wii U) and backup vWiis keys and NAND.
cIOS is needed to use backuplaunchers like Wiiflow and USB-Loader GX.
This does not enable any hacks in Wii U-mode!

Note: You already need to have Homebrew Channel installed on vWii to use this guide (use one of these exploits)!
Lets go:
Download the following package:
www.mediafire.com/?n2zl8v5kn288j9d
(Mirror at the bottom of the post)
All files are up-to-date (as of april 29th 2016)!
Note: To avoid errors, only use the files provided in this archive!
Don´t mix with other d2x-installer versions, meta.xml files etc.
Don´t worry, everything is up-to-date and the latest and greatest version.

It contains:
- Dump Mii NAND v1.2
- d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii
- d2x-v10-beta52-vWii
- FIX94s d2x cIOS Installer 2.2 mod

First we make a backup of your vWii NAND and keys:

1.) Extract the contents of vWii_cIOS_apps_20131218.zip to the root folder of your SD card.
Note: Make sure that you don´t have any original Wii system files (like wads) on your SD Card!
d2x installer could accidentally use them for installation and brick your vWii!

Also make sure that you have at least 528MB of free space on the SD Card for the NAND dump.

3.) Launch Dump Mii NAND from the Homebrew Channel.

4.) The NAND and keys dumping will start automatically (the NAND dump will be stored in sd:/nand.bin, the keys in sd:/keys.bin).
Note: DON´t use this dump on an original Wii!

5.) When finished (depends on the speed of your SD Card), the Wii U will reboot.

5a.) (Optional, but recommended step.)
Dump your IOS one-by-one to wad files for possible semi-brick fix (for more info read this thread):
I.) Download YetAnotherBlueDumpMod from here.
II.) Copy the files to your SD card sd:/apps/YetAnotherBlueDumpMod and launch the app from the Homebrew Channel.
II.) Go to System Titles and dump each IOS individually to a wad.
When prompted to fakesign the ticket or TMD, say No to both.

It's a tedious process, but it could save you a lot of trouble in the future.

If you don't have CLEAN (non fakesigned) IOS, you won't be able to fix semi-bricked vWii.
You can't create non fakesigned wads from a NAND dump or from using ShowMiiWads. You NEED to use YetAnotherBlueDumpMod.

Now we install d2x cIOS:

6.) Launch d2x cIOS installer from the Homebrew Channel.

7.) Choose which d2x cIOS version you want to install, beta52 or beta53-alt.
If you don´t plan to use EmuNAND, i recommend beta53-alt.
Note: For info about the differences between beta52 & beta53-alt click here.

8.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <56>
Select cIOS slot : <249>

9.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

10.) Press A to continue.

11.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <57>
Select cIOS slot : <250>

12.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

13.) Press A to continue.

14.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <58>
Select cIOS slot : <251>

15.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

16.) Press B to Exit.

17.) Launch newest Wiiflow or USB-Loader GX or CFG USB Loader MOD from the Homebrew Channel.
Note: To copy game images from PC to your external HDD with the correct folder structure, use Wii Backup Manager.
To fix the 4:3 aspect ratio bug of the Homebrew Channel, see FAQ & Troubleshooting section.

18.) Read the FAQ & Troubleshooting section carefully!

19.) Happy gaming! :D

FAQ & Troubleshooting:
- there is currently no Bootmii for vWii, so we use Dump Mii NAND.
- there is no Hermes cIOS 222/223 for vWii (don´t install the Wii version!).
- connect your HDD to the upper back USB-Port.
- you need a Y-USB-Cable for some 2.5" HDDs to properly work (even when they worked on the original Wii), because the Wii U USB-ports have a lower power supply.
- if HDD gets detected but no games load or HDD "clicks" you need a Y-USB-Cable
- to prevent the HDD format message on bootup, use U-Stealth.
- some HDDs don´t work with cIOS 249(base 56), so change the cIOS to 250(base 57) or 251(base 58) in your USB-Loader.
- to fix the 4:3 aspect ratio bug of the Homebrew Channel use JoostinOnlines HBC Forwarder or tueidjs aspect ratio fixer (tueidjs fixer doesn't require installing a wad to the console, it's a homebrew to launch from Homebrew Channel before launching other homebrew).
- to (un)install wads i recommend YAWMM_EN 0.5e (english Version) or YAWMM DE 0.5e (german version).
- if you want to start installed wads like VC/Wiiware from SD card, you need to patch IOS80 (system menu), use this thread for guidance.
Note: This is dangerous! If you f*** up IOS80, you will get a brick!
Only use the patch if you know what you are doing!

- don´t install Priiloader, it will brick your vWii!
- don´t install original Wii Channel Forwarder, they will freeze on startup! Use the ones from this thread. (For WiiFlow you can use the official Channel Installer)

Many tools/installers/wads etc. that worked on the original Wii will brick vWii!
So be very cautious on what you install!

Pity.

Ok - so the next, obvious, question is .... can I use a USB HDD as both a Wii U drive AND a CFG Loader one ? And if so, is there a guide as to how do it / what partitions you need ?

WiiU will format your whole drive into one single partition. You cannot use the HDD for anything else.

Nice guide - easy to follow and works perfectly with, in my case, 1 small problem.

I am using the CFG Forwarder from the 2nd post in this thread. The Forwarder refuses to find the app on the USB drive but when run off the SD card, CFG Loader can see the USB drive fine. Any ideas ? It is not a major hassle as the 2GB SD card should be big enough to store the images but I was just curious.
You used the paths asper posted?
Perhaps the USB paths are wrong or entirely absent from the forwarder.
It would be the beste to drop asper a PM about that.

yeah tried on the wiiflow thread, no answer there also :/
Write a PM to FIX94 directly, it´s the (current) dev of wiiflow.

Hello everyone, new guy here!.

I've been spending the last couple of hours reading a lot of tutorials and info on how to install homebrew channel and loaders on the Wii mode on the WiiU but still have a couple of questions that I can't find answers to. BTW, sorry if any of them seem pretty noob.

1) I know you can't use the same HDD for the WiiU and the vWii mode but can I load Wii games in vWii from a 32GBs SD card?.
2) What happens when there's a system update for the WiiU? I don't mind if all the homebrew stuff is deleted and have to install it again but would there be a problem like bricking or something like that if I update the WiiU system with a modified vWii?. Basically, how safe is it to install HC + some loader and maybe a forwarder on the system menu and what the risks are? I've already done it on 2 regular Wiis so I have an idea of what I'm doing but this system is all new to me.
3) I have more questions but I can't seem to remember them right now.. will probably be posting/editing as I remember them >.<.

Thanks! :D.

i've never tested with a large SD card for the loaders, but as long as HBC will read from the SD card the loader should be able to as well (I have CFG USB Loader loading from a hard drive using a NTFS partition so it makes for easier moving to/from the HDD, and FAT32 does not support files over 4GB)

you are taking the same risks that you were taking as when you install to an original Wii, but if anything is gonna be bricked, it will be the vWii mode

EDIT: and as a side note, it might be a good idea to sticky this thread. i had hell searching for this when i got my system and was getting ready to mod the emulator

Perfect thanks!.

So the vWii mode can get bricked independently from the main WiiU system?.

Also, from what I read the only 2 methods to do it on a US WiiU is with either Indiana Jones or SSBB right? or is there some way without the game?.

Yes

There is a link with all the games you can use for the exploit.
But yes you only can exploit via game. Bannerbomb, Letterbomb etc. don´t work.

Nope, the vWii has never been susceptible to letterbomb or bannerbomb, unfortunately. The WiiUBrew site has been accurate for at least the last 30-45 days that I've been paying attention. Thankfully Smash Stack still works, so my copy of Smash Bros. came in handy yet again. :)

Brilliant guide, thanks Truth  I did my own Basic without error, but trying my son's Premium (admittedly with a fairly large Wii-to-Wii U transfer having been done on that machine) gave error 'Error:open(sd:/FSTOOLBOX/title/00010000/52483650/data/HP:HBP0) returned 0' during the FS-Toolbox dump. Should I be worried?

EDIT: Googling this showed a similar error with the earlier FS Dumper - caused by the HBP0 Harry Potter savefile. It was fixed there. Maybe I should email the author of FS-Toolbox?

This may sound trivial but you should add to the tutorial that your usb hdd should be plugged in prior to going into vwii mode, this will help get your usb device recognized by the usb loaders and those using a y- cable the fat part goes in the upper back usb and the extension goes into the bottom one.... hope I helped someone

28. April 2013: Updated Wiiflow link to 4.1.2 and USB-Loader GX link to r1213.
08. January 2013: Updated USB-Loader GX link to r1208.
04. January 2013: Fixed a typo, that could prevent the installer from detecting beta52 (thx yafaiz). Added link to WiiFlow Channel Installer v1.1.

01. January 2013: Wiiflow 4.1 link added.
31. December 2012: Removed d2x beta53-alt from the package, because ciosmaps.xml mixup causes errors. Added link to forwarder thread.
29. December 2012: Added new version of xyzzy (1.2.2 (unofficial), thx DarkMatterCore) and d2x beta53-alt to the package.
19. December 2012: First version.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What does it do?:
This guide shows you how to install cIOS into vWii (aka the Wii-mode of Wii U) and backup vWiis keys and NAND filesystem.
cIOS is needed to use backuplaunchers like Wiiflow and USB-Loader GX.
This does not enable any hacks in Wii U-mode!
Note: You already need to have Homebrew Channel installed on vWii to use this guide (use one of these exploits)!
Lets go:
Download the following Package:
http://www.mediafire.com/?bp251jk0y4a0pqo

It contains:
- xyzzy 1.2.2 (unofficial)
- FS-Toolbox 0.4d
- d2x-v10-beta52-vWii (better compatibility then beta53 according to d2x beta testers + future SNEEK support)
Note: When you get errors during installation or game bootup, try d2x beta53-alt. See Troubleshoot section for more info!
- FIX94' d2x cIOS Installer 2.2 mod

First we make a backup of your vWii NAND filesystem and your keys:

1.) Extract the contents of vWii_cIOS_apps.zip to the apps folder on your SD card.
Note: Make sure that you don´t have any original Wii system files (like wads) on your SD Card!
d2x installer could accidentally use them for installation and brick your vWii!

3.) Launch Xyzzy from your Homebrew Channel.

4.) Select "SD Card", press A and wait for the keys to dump.

5.) When finished, press A to go back to the Homebrew Channel (the keys will be stored as keys.txt on your SD Card).

6.) Launch FS Toolbox from your Homebrew Channel.

7.) Press A to continue

8.) Press 1 to select the whole NAND filesystem

9.) Press A to dump your NAND filesystem to SD card (the dump will be stored in FSTOOLBOX folder on your SD Card).
Note: Unlike Bootmii, FS Toolbox will not dump one big NAND image, but all the files/folders separately. So the size of your backup depends on how many savegames/VC/Wiiware you have installed on your console.

10.) When finished, press Home to return to the Homebrew Channel.

Now we install d2x cIOS:

11.) Launch d2x cIOS installer from the Homebrew Channel.

12.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta52-vWii> (Alternative: beta53-alt)
Select cIOS base : <56>
Select cIOS slot : <249>

13.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

14.) Press A to continue.

15.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta52-vWii> (Alternative: beta53-alt)
Select cIOS base : <57>
Select cIOS slot : <250>

16.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

17.) Press A to continue.

18.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta52-vWii> (Alternative: beta53-alt)
Select cIOS base : <58>
Select cIOS slot : <251>

19.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

20.) Press B to Exit.

21.) Launch Wiiflow 4.1.2 or USB Loader GX r1213 from your Homebrew Channel.

22.) Happy gaming! :D

FAQ:
Troubleshooting:
- use the upper back USB-Port.
- you need to unplug the HDD when booting the WiiU to prevent the format message.
- only one USB-storage device at a time is supported by WiiU.
- you need a Y-USB-Cable for some 2.5" HDDs to properly work (even when they worked on the original Wii), because the Wii U USB-ports have a lower power supply.
- if HDD gets detected but no games load or HDD "clicks" you need a Y-USB-Cable
- some HDDs don´t work with cIOS 249(base 56), so change the cIOS to 250(base 57) or 251(base 58) in your USB-Loader.
- when you get errors during installation or game bootup, try d2x beta53-alt. Copy the contents to sd:/apps/d2x-cios-installer and overwrite the existing files.

General FAQ:
- there is currently no Bootmii for vWii, so we have to backup with FS-Toolbox and xyzzy.
- to (un)install wads you can use YAWMM DE 0.5e (german language).
- don´t install Priiloader, it will brick your vWii!
- don´t install original Wii Channel Forwarder, they will freeze on startup! Use the ones from this thread. (For WiiFlow you can use the official Channel Installer)
- don´t install anything that messes with IOS 80 (System Menu), you will get a brick!
- many things that worked on the original Wii will brick vWii. So be very cautious on what you install!

This shoud get a from every person that used this post. I decided to take the plunge and just do it . These instructions couldn't be any better , its a real hand holder and I just want to say thank you. I can finally pack away my Wii.

Some information I hope might be helpful: it appears that the vWii can be returned to stock settings after softmodding, as this worked with my Basic Pack. I first cleared the vWii menu by deleting the Homebrew Channel, then I did a Delete all Content and Settings in the Wii U System Settings menu. I got an error message first time around (can't remember what it was, sorry), but checked vWii and all was well other than the playlog was still full and the save games were all still there. So I repeated the Delete all Content and Settings and second time around it erased and restored vWii completely :)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    I appreciate the insight!
