Ok, i downloaded a DSi picture from DSiBrew.org, and then opened it in paint and saved with a different name. I then used a hex editor which can compare files to compare the two files. What I found is that, apart from about a line and a half at the start and about a dozen random values, it was completely different. What's more, the version I had saved in Paint was missing a large section at the end which was present in the DSi one. I'm not sure what this means, but maybe that's what we need to be able to put pictures on? that bit at the end? although the fact that almost every value in the file was different suggests that the DSi saves them differently or something. I'd look into it more and experiment, but I don't have a DSi, so can't really experiment much. Maybe if I get a DSi I'll be able to do something, but probably not, and I won't be buying a DSi, so the only options are winning one or someone deciding to give me one.
Well, if you could edit that picture in Paint then change the hex's to the right thing then upload it, then I'll test it and see if it shows up.

Well that won't work if you mean what I think you do. I believe that the DSi will only display pictures taken with THAT DSi, and the footer in the DSiBrew picture is from a different DSi. If you could upload a couple of pictures from your DSi, I'd see what I can do.

You cannot edit the images due to the HMAC inside them. Any change to the data will throw it off, making the DSi reject the image.

Allowing edited images would put the DSi at risk for exploits in the image rendering software.

Have you guys read the DSi operations manual. It explains how the DSi photos work, and why they can't be edited.

Photos taken on a Nintendo DSi contain thumbnail data and photo data. Editing the photos on a PC or other device does not guarantee that the thumbnail data will reflect those changes. As a result, third parties may be able to view unedited thumbnail data if altered photos are uploaded to the Internet. Photos modified on a DSi system reflect those changes in their thumbnails.
So, we have to figure out the whole "thumbnail data" thing and how it works... (I think)

Yes and also workout the locations and hashes used on the 4-5 checksums used in pictures. Its more work than you'd think.

Hey your back!, anyways, yeah, I'm CLEARLY not skilled enough to edit pictures and show them on the dsi, I really think we should just wait, while finding out how to put our own pictures on the dsi would be pretty cool, it doesn't necessarily mean we'll find an exploit. Though judging by how much work has been put into this, I've actually though of something about nintendo, other then the fact that they're ass wholes, seriously, I was really looking forward to viewing my own pics from my pc on the dsi but nintendo probably found an exploit in the shop channel, couldn't figure out how to fix it, and said "fuck it, we just won't let them put their own pics on their"

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'll put some up on RS or something soon for you to look at. If I knew how to hex edit I would, but I have no idea...

I somehow doubt that putting a picture on there would make an exploit in shop. That's like saying putting a song on there will mess it up.

(^That would be so awesome if what I said actually worked, but it probably won't)

well I just opened up a DSiWare title in notepad... It is the most gnarly, nasty, and biggest block of ACSII characters I have ever seen

(just letting you guys know)

This is probably the stupidest idea yet... But I'll say it anyways to see if it gives anyone ideas...

But what if Wii Homebrew makers and people working on hacking the DSi team up and make a hack similar to the demo service of the Nintendo Channel and send something from the Wii to the DSi via download play that will run.

But like I said. thats probably the dumbest idea yet.

Not as dumb as opening a DSiWare game in notepad and thinking it would give some kind of useable result!

That's not a bad idea you've got but it wouldn't really work for something like this, you'd still need to know the common key for installing stuff to the channel and for the download play thing itself. It'd be a nifty idea for small demos and single file homebrew though.

True... Compared to some of the stuff in this topic... I'm sure that it's one of the better ideas posted XD

And now that I think of it. That could be cool if someone figures it out

Yeah, it's a good idea, the only thing is, I believe we'd need the DSi common key for it to work, but we don't have it. Does anyone know, can we send DS mode stuff without the common key? Because then we could package a DS homebrew into a file and send it. Like WiFiMe, only with a homebrew inside, rather than a passme program. How would we go about this? I reckon the Wii could be used to send the file, via a homebrew on Wii, but how do we create the file? Is it straight forward, or is it a tricky process? Maybe we could make a WiFiMe that will boot slot 1 cards which aren't DSi ones, like Cyclo or something. I dunno, I'm putting ideas out there. Anyone know how wifime was made?

Something else I might have noticed.
Wouldn't Download play most likely send it to DS Mode as opposed to DSiMode?
I mean it's still possible if you send the right thing but something I'm just noticing there.

Does anyone here know of any DS-mode exploits found in games? If there is one, other than Fifa, since I dont have that game, then I wouldnt need to buy an Acekard. I'm bored of waiting for DSi mode homebrew, and dont have any money to buy a new flashcart.

About the download play thing, its probably only DS mode, at least for now. Maybe once Nintendo starts making DSi mode games they'll have DSi mode demos too. But even if it was DSi mode, the game would have to pass the RSA check, or be flashed, which would require homebrew. So I dont think download play is gonna help us here.

I was thinking it'd be more of an installer once homebrew is cracked for it.

EDIT: Wait a minute, has anyone decoded the first DSi Enhanced game yet
