this makes no sense
with these the graduating class takes them leaving nothing at all for the next year of new students
with an actual pc upgrade all students can enjoy the computers.
also, how much homework can you really finish with an ipod or ipad? you'd have to head to your pc to type it up and print it out anyway :|
the students don't own them. They're loaned out, like textbooks.

It's not just the computers. I'm guessing they would have to use a server to manage all the computers and their respective software. Servers add to the cost, software licences (Photoshop, Flash, Visual Basic, etc.) add to the cost, and maintenance.
Even heard of Linux?
If setup right, they wouldn't need servers.
