Free iPods given to 600 pupils

Almost 200 Year 11 pupils at Taunton Academy now have the £150 handsets which give them access to a multitude of apps to help with their homework.
Teachers have also splashed out on 60 new iPad readers for classrooms – but insist the scheme is cheaper than forking out for a new IT suite.
‘We have spent no more money on this than we would have done on upgrading our PCs, which are out of date,’ said head teacher Mark Trusson.
‘It would cost about £50,000 for a new IT suite with 30 computers but we can give out 600 of these for about twice that amount – it’s better value for money. Experience elsewhere suggests students respond to this idea – they don’t let them out of their sight.

'Staff need to use their classroom management skills with them as they would any other educational resource.'
While pupils will be able to store music, photos, video and data files on their new toys, inappropriate internet sites and social networking portals like Facebook will be blocked by the school’s filters.

with these the graduating class takes them leaving nothing at all for the next year of new students

with an actual pc upgrade all students can enjoy the computers.

also, how much homework can you really finish with an ipod or ipad? you'd have to head to your pc to type it up and print it out anyway :|

It's not just the computers. I'm guessing they would have to use a server to manage all the computers and their respective software. Servers add to the cost, software licences (Photoshop, Flash, Visual Basic, etc.) add to the cost, and maintenance.

my school has got better computers then I have at home, and everyone is restricted to 10% of their power. They cost around €600,- each

when i was in school we only had mac's. i don't remember what we used back then but playing Oregon trail in computer class was the high light of my day. these kids have it very good now a days. shit, i don;t even own an ipod and these kids are getting them for free.
