Sonic 2 for the Master System / Game Gear receives an impressive fanmade 16-bit remake demo

The past few months saw quite a number of new and updated romhacking and homebrew projects, with the likes of the Sonic Hacking Contest 2024 (SHC) and the Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2024 (SAGE) happening just a few weeks ago. However, those two are far from being the only Sonic-related events happening during these past months, as just as recently as last week, the Chao Games Showcase 2024 (CGS) took place, showing even more fanmade projects related to Sonic in general.

One of these new projects is a fanmade remake of the lesser known 8-bit iteration of Sonic 2, which was originally released for the Sega Master System (SMS) and its portable brother, the Sega Game Gear (GG). While the original Sonic 1 SMS/GG release featured zones and levels closely resembling that of the 16-bit version of the game, Sonic 2 SMS/GG instead features new original levels compared to the popular 16-bit version, which makes it a standout release on its own.

Seeing how much the 8-bit version deviated from the 16-bit one, Team Supernova, with StellarStardust being the project lead, started work on a fanmade remake project for that version of the game, with the first iteration of it being showcased in CGS 2024.

StellarStardust said:
This project aims to re-imagine the 8-bit Master System/Game Gear versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Every zone has been re-imagined completely to fit that of the likes of Sonic 2 and CD. This demo for CGS2024 features only one zone, Under Ground Zone.

The demo for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 SMS/GG 16-bit is now available and can be downloaded from the CGS 2024 forum thread for the project, and those interested can try out the demo right now. Since its original release, the game has seen 3 bugfixing patches, with the latest patch adding controller support.

Since the Master System is still sold in Brazil by Tec Toy, that does make sense.

Only as "Has 100 games, runs like crap and can't play cardridges" garbage. The actual master system models aren't sold anymore. You can still find Sega Genesis clones online however.

Sonic 2 on Game Gear was the first ever Sonic game I played. I am VERY excited to see this!

Edit: Oh I see, it's for PC and not a ROMhack for the MD.:(

I remember when a fan made a game that looked amazing (especially using Nvida3D) not sure if it got shut down by sega, but its graphic style was before Sega did its EP1 and generations.

It'd be a shame if it is true that sega shut it down, because if it hadn't have been for that fan game, it'd be highly likely that sega would have carried on with its same old 2D style.

I miss been able to play games in 3D, I still have my old pc with the Nvida 3D graphic card, glasses and usb receiver, just no 3D monitor.

Though if I remember right, it had to be a 120Hz screen, so would 240Hz screen work. That's if I can be bothered to buy a new CPU fan, shame newer graphic cards with more GB memory cant use it too.

Used to love gaming in 3D.

Really damn good for a remake, but time will tell if it's ever gonna be completed.
Most sonic fangames are either stuck in development hell or silently cancelled.
