Fanmade port of Splatterhouse for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis gets its first public demo

Halloween is upon us once again, and to celebrate the occasion, one developer has released a fan port demo for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis of one of his favourite games, the original Splatterhouse.

Game developer Chris from Monster Bath Games Inc. has been working on an unofficial fanmade port of the original Splatterhouse, which was originally released back in 1988 by Namco for arcades. The game later saw ports to the PC-Engine/Turbografx-16 (albeit with censorship and other modifications), and the rather obscure Japanese exclusive FM Towns Marty console. Other ports came later on, but as far as consoles from the time, only those two received ports of the original game, with the game being absent entirely from the more popular 16-bit consoles of the time, like the Super Nintendo or the Sega Genesis or Mega Drive.

However, with the current evolution and interest in homebrew and game development for retro consoles, that will change soon, as developer Chris took the opportunity to port over the original Splatterhouse to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, titled "Mega Splatterhouse", while remaining faithful to the original artwork and aesthetic of the original Arcade release.

This is a fan port of Splatterhouse I've been working on to learn the ropes of Sega Megadrive/Genesis development.

This game will be made free to play on release. For now please enjoy the demo.

Please note that this is a ***WORK IN PROGRESS*** and that what is in this demo is not necessarily the final versions of art, color, sound or music. There may be bugs as well. They will be fixed. There is tuning to be done - it will be done.

***We will not be adding red blood to the game, we will not be adding the cutting room floor sprites/objects/enemies that were not in the final game. We will make adjustments to some things to make it look better with the genesis color palette and will do a few things to show off the genesis abilities over the original game (parallax scrolling etc). ***

The demo for this fanmade port "Mega Splatterhouse" is now available on Itch.io for anyone interested in trying it out.

people releasing demo's and not completed works very rarely finish their work. most these people are clout chasing. hopefully im wrong but i doubt this guy will ever finish the game.

Hey @ShadowOne333 you forgot to put a banner so the story on the front page looks like this.

It seems like the site's feature that took YouTube thumbnails from the linked video for the banner images is not working anymore.
I have added it manually, but that's certainly something that could be fixed later on, but I am not sure who is in charge of that.

On one hand this is great on the other the game itself kinda sucks and is hard to go back to play nowadays.

I thought the exact same thing at first, but I think I was just remembering Splatterhouse 2.

Spoken like someone that's been part of the scene for a while. I understand this pain well.

I'm not familiar with this dev. If they have a lot of proof of concepts and demos in their portfolio, I'd expect similar results here. The dev(s) did outline goals for the project, as shown in the OP, so hopefully, this is a project meant to reach completion.

That reminds me, I have to see how the Mega Man 4-6 Genesis project is coming along.

The Dev behind this port has several games on the Nintendo eShop including the not bad at all Deathwish Enforcer's. Also the awesome arcade game Super Battle Princess Madelyn was by him.

Thanks for the extra confirm @Robert Newbie, I thought I was going mad!! :toot:
Did you ever go to Largs/Ayr when you were young my boyfriend says he remembers playing the arcade game in the arcade in Largs and in Butlins Ayr. Perhaps that's what you played lol.

As for being a fountain of knowledge well I did get banned from my local pub quiz because I won it 15 weeks in a row :rofl2:

Just mentioning the Sega Channel put me back on the Garfield: The Lost Levels track. This time is different because user PZTunleaded posted new video as of September 29, 2024:

The description of the video reads "You'll get to play it sooner or later so don't be a nuisance and/or a menace pls"
Could it be?

Sorry to derail the topic, I just came across this.

sega channel was such an awesome concept at the time. before online services became obtrusive and full of gatcha purchases. NSO can never compete with what sega channel was. i played garfield when it was on sega channel too. great game it was. hopefully the find is released publicly

Who would've thunk that there were hobbyist devs interested in making ports of cult classic games for retro consoles of yesteryear in 2024 (e.g., Doom 64 port for Saturn, GBC Mega Man ports, etc.)... What a time to be alive 😎

@realtimesave, It isn't really the same as it was. I think that the games that are coming out result in a buggy mess and it doesn't seem to appeal well to a wider audience. If you look at games from over a decade ago, you will notice how better they are, like GTA V for example.

    I used to play 007 and cod4 a lot

Pretty much all the games that come out buggy get patched soon after anyways. Not to many that I've noticed are game breaking bugs. Of course I mostly only game on Xbox seriesx.

    @BigOnYa It's still unacceptable

I wonder if anyone actually uses a PS5 these days

Game updates are a norm today, deal with it. They only make games better. GTAV gets weekly updates still today.

@BigOnYa Game updates are a good thing. But shouldn

be a crutch for releasing a working game
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I have not played a game in years that had a game breaking bug on launch, so I wouldn't say a crutch.

    Scarlet and voilet

Maybe different on PC, who knows, since I'm in the Xbox ecosystem.

Yep, been playing fallout76 for years, since launch, I never had any game breaking bugs, or corrupted saves. Don't play No Mans Sky, its boring.
  • kijetesantakalu042 @ kijetesantakalu042:
At launch there were some issues
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Issues? All games have issues, but not game breaking.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again don't play on PC, nor would play that. And who knows, some those "issues" could just be your PC.

usually issues are a shitty PC
