Fanmade port of Splatterhouse for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis gets its first public demo

Halloween is upon us once again, and to celebrate the occasion, one developer has released a fan port demo for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis of one of his favourite games, the original Splatterhouse.

Game developer Chris from Monster Bath Games Inc. has been working on an unofficial fanmade port of the original Splatterhouse, which was originally released back in 1988 by Namco for arcades. The game later saw ports to the PC-Engine/Turbografx-16 (albeit with censorship and other modifications), and the rather obscure Japanese exclusive FM Towns Marty console. Other ports came later on, but as far as consoles from the time, only those two received ports of the original game, with the game being absent entirely from the more popular 16-bit consoles of the time, like the Super Nintendo or the Sega Genesis or Mega Drive.

However, with the current evolution and interest in homebrew and game development for retro consoles, that will change soon, as developer Chris took the opportunity to port over the original Splatterhouse to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, titled "Mega Splatterhouse", while remaining faithful to the original artwork and aesthetic of the original Arcade release.

This is a fan port of Splatterhouse I've been working on to learn the ropes of Sega Megadrive/Genesis development.

This game will be made free to play on release. For now please enjoy the demo.

Please note that this is a ***WORK IN PROGRESS*** and that what is in this demo is not necessarily the final versions of art, color, sound or music. There may be bugs as well. They will be fixed. There is tuning to be done - it will be done.

***We will not be adding red blood to the game, we will not be adding the cutting room floor sprites/objects/enemies that were not in the final game. We will make adjustments to some things to make it look better with the genesis color palette and will do a few things to show off the genesis abilities over the original game (parallax scrolling etc). ***

The demo for this fanmade port "Mega Splatterhouse" is now available on Itch.io for anyone interested in trying it out.

Epic stuff! Hopefully we get the full game for next Halloween! <3

Not related to Halloween but while we're looking at the Genesis, be also sure to check out this nice rom hack for SSF2 that was released recently:

sega channel was such an awesome concept at the time. before online services became obtrusive and full of gatcha purchases. NSO can never compete with what sega channel was. i played garfield when it was on sega channel too. great game it was. hopefully the find is released publicly
Well, I waited 21 years for Fear Effect Inferno, and that prototype got released this year.

Garfield: The Lost Levels has been a 29-year wait and counting, but now there's actual hope of a release. I thought that since it was on Sega Channel, the build couldn't be salvaged, but here we are. I did play the game back in the day, so hearing that there were three whole levels (Viking, Robin Hood, and space) and one train sequence scrapped really got my attention.

It's funny that Caught in the Act is probably the best Garfield game ever made.
