Fanmade "Project Reignition" aims to recreate "Sonic and the Secret Rings" in the Godot Engine

The Sonic fanbase and both its romhacking and homebrew community are some of the most active ones out there, and each year they hold contests to showcase whatever projects the fanbase is currently working on, be it directly related to the Sonic franchise, or entirely new indie projects inspired by it, in either the Sonic Hacking Contest (SHC) or the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE), with the showcasing also indie titles as well.

Some homebrew developers from the community have made entire recreations of certain games from the franchise, like the well known Project 06 which recreates most of Sonic 06's content, alongside a lot of new gameplay features and quality of life changes, and others like a remake of Sonic 3D Blast for PC. This time, another game from the 3D era of Sonic is being recreated by developer KumaPauZ (or KumaPaus) for SAGE 2024, with the title in question being "Sonic and the Secret Rings", which was originally released for the Nintendo Wii back in 2007.

KumaPaus has recreated the basics of Sonic and the Secret Rings in the Godot Engine, and has just released a demo showcasing the very first two stages of the game, Sand Oasis and Dino Jungle, alongside all of their missions. Additionally, the demo also features 30 skills and an experience system as well.

According to KumaPaus, Project Reignition "aims to bring Secret Rings to modern standards by providing Standard Controller Support, Updated Visuals, and Improved Gameplay". The visuals for the game have been recreated from scratch, and some missions will contain new visuals and music to help against the repetitiveness of the original game.

Those interested in trying out Project Reignition can do so by visiting the Sonic Fan Games HQ website and visiting the Project Reignition showcase page, with both Windows and Linux/Steam Deck versions available. Sonic fans can also check out the currently on-going (until September 13th) SAGE 2024 website for even more Sonic or Sonic related content, as well as some other original content too by the community.

Sonic fans are either extremely talented, extremely whiny, or extreme creeps.

This is a good example of the first category.
Sometimes all three at once

It's always impressive how far Sonic fans can go to remake a very bad game into an at least pretty decent experience.
This really sums it up. I should mention that I've never played Sonic and the Secret Rings, but I'm aware of its reputation.

Sonic 06 has had a few fan attempts at remaking the game, and I think someone was trying to make a Sonic Unleashed version without the Werehog levels. I need to check up on these projects. Good luck to all the devs!

What makes games like this or 06 bad games is essentially rushed releases. Actually both this and 06 where developed under the same budget by the same team if I record correctly. 06 is just unfinished, and this one needed to rethink the controls at least. Pick them up, develop them with time and care and you can get good games out of them.

This was a pretty impressive showing for a fan-made restoration project, gameplay-wise and for its textures from a graphics standpoint, representative of its presentation, and it also helps that the person behind the screen capture is competent at playing this game as well 😁

The storybook games get a lot of grief for relying heavily on motion controls, but from a creative standpoint, their originality and risks stick out. I'm sick of the modern team still playing it safe with the same recycled zones. I'm so glad the mid-2000s titles are getting TLC with these restorations!

Reading this post gave me flashbacks to Sonic 4. I tried to play Episode 1, but it felt like a mobile game. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but it felt bland.

I tried again with Episode 2, and it went for nostalgia right off the bat with Aquatic Ruin Zone. I never finished that one either, but I can't remember if it felt genuinely better than Episode 1. I think there were plans for more episodes, but Sonic 4 didn't resonate, so Sega scrapped it.

I'll admit that of the Wii Sonic games, this is the one I never beat. I never really liked the control scheme of the game, even though for some reason I went out and beat Sonic and the Black Knight which has the crazy hack and slashing with the Wii remote. I hope I can finally "experience" this game through this project.
