Trump to nominate Matt Gaetz for Attorney General

Trump has announced he will pick Matt Gaetz to become the next US attorney general. The attorney general is the head of the department of Justice and the highest ranking law enforcement officer in the nation.

This comes as Gaetz himself is beleaguered by Republican led ethics probes into his alleged misconduct including sex trafficking, illicit drug use, misuse of campaign funds and accepting bribes.

There were reports of audible disappointment and surprise among Republican party members during a party conference call in which they learned about the nomination.

Republicans control the Senate, but Gaetz is uniquely unpopular among his own party - both for his alleged crimes and for collapsing the house during McCarthy's speakership. His confirmation is not necessarily a given with some Republicans signaling they would not approve his nomination.
