Sonic 2 for the Master System / Game Gear receives an impressive fanmade 16-bit remake demo

The past few months saw quite a number of new and updated romhacking and homebrew projects, with the likes of the Sonic Hacking Contest 2024 (SHC) and the Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2024 (SAGE) happening just a few weeks ago. However, those two are far from being the only Sonic-related events happening during these past months, as just as recently as last week, the Chao Games Showcase 2024 (CGS) took place, showing even more fanmade projects related to Sonic in general.

One of these new projects is a fanmade remake of the lesser known 8-bit iteration of Sonic 2, which was originally released for the Sega Master System (SMS) and its portable brother, the Sega Game Gear (GG). While the original Sonic 1 SMS/GG release featured zones and levels closely resembling that of the 16-bit version of the game, Sonic 2 SMS/GG instead features new original levels compared to the popular 16-bit version, which makes it a standout release on its own.

Seeing how much the 8-bit version deviated from the 16-bit one, Team Supernova, with StellarStardust being the project lead, started work on a fanmade remake project for that version of the game, with the first iteration of it being showcased in CGS 2024.

StellarStardust said:
This project aims to re-imagine the 8-bit Master System/Game Gear versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Every zone has been re-imagined completely to fit that of the likes of Sonic 2 and CD. This demo for CGS2024 features only one zone, Under Ground Zone.

The demo for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 SMS/GG 16-bit is now available and can be downloaded from the CGS 2024 forum thread for the project, and those interested can try out the demo right now. Since its original release, the game has seen 3 bugfixing patches, with the latest patch adding controller support.

I saw this a few days ago and it looks freaking beautiful!

Be holding out for the finished product if it happens as so many of these never get finished sadly.

Many people think that Tails debuted on the Sonic 2 game for the Genesis, but in reality he first appeared on the Master System/Game Gear version of the game.

Of course you cannot play as Tails in that version, and so in this remake.

But Sonic 2 Genesis/Megadrive version came out 21st November 1992 in Japan and rest of the world was 24th November 1992

And Sonic 2 Master system came out 24th November 1992 worldwide

Gamegear was 21st November Japan and a whole month later worldwide

So he debuted in Japan on the Megadrive And debuted in the west on the Genesis/Master system at the same time

I really enjoy projects like this. I recall that a Genesis-style version of Sonic Triple Trouble came out not too long ago, and what I played of that was pretty solid. I'm not sure if it's the same dev(s), but I'll definitely be watching this.

Actually, the Master System version was released only in Europe. The Game Gear version was released across all regions instead.

Care to reconsider that?? Here is the box for the Brazilian and South Korean master System versions.

Read the posts above.
So you admit your claim about Tails appearing in the Master system/game gear version first is wrong??

And you admit you were wrong to say the master system title only came out in Europe??

Well that's ok then I accept your admittance of being wrong :rofl2:
