Best console of all time?

I have to argue that Wii U is the best console of all time. It is perfect for Covid lockdown. Many types of physical activity games. Just Dance, Wii sport games and dance mat works in a lot of games (Cloudberry Kingdom is awesome with dance mat).

PS4 comes close but not quite because of low amount of physical activity games and poor hardware support for them. The games are awesome otherwise.

The new generation has not yet shown enough to convince me.

I didn't know we based things like amount of games that make you stand up, and move to being a selling point for a entire console. Not to mention Playstation experiments with the action based gaming like the ps2 eye toy, ps3 move controls and ps4 vr was just no where near as convincing as the simple to use wii mote controls.

I still like the sega megadrive. People constantly presenting new stuff for it like it never stopped being good. Almost like master system in brazil.

Snes also keeps getting new stuff in it too, too bad these things are all done by loving fans and wasn't official back in the day. It sucks. To think how much longer these consoles would have persisted in history if the stuff people do on it now was done officially back then. I want a snes tricked out with FMV videos, audio cd and stuff like MSU-1 and a megadrive with upgraded hardware that makes blast processing more than just a marketing gimmick.

As a console: The Wii U
As much shit as the Wii U got, and it's far from my favorite system... I have to give credit where credit is due. It can play all Nintendo games from Wii U, all the way down to the NES, and even more game libraries open up once you install Retroarch and Nintendont. That's 3 back-to-back generations of disc-based systems, PLUS everything that ever came before it. (Now, we'll probably never get full speed Dreamcast or Saturn emulation, but I can overlook that.) It's a killer system that needs some work, but overall is amazing. The gamepad needs a bigger battery upgrade, which is easy these days to DIY... and you might be able to solderblob over the USB port's resisters that artificially limit the power draw, which cause USB harddrive power starvation issues. (I just use a USB flash drive, and no issues yet.)

As a portable: The 3DS
It too can run previous generation of cartridges with backward compatibility, and with VC injects and emulators, can run everything from PS1 on down, mostly flawlessly. GameYob is personally one of the best Gameboy/Color emulators I've ever used, and I'm glad Drenn ported it to DS AND 3DS. GBA VC injects work well for me, NES and SNES play great, and even a handful of PS1 games play alright for me. You can dump cart games using Godmode9, and play them from SD card, even DS games thanks to TWiLight Menu++. Having so many systems in such a compact device with decent battery life and great controls with Stereo sound is really difficult to match or beat, even with the greatest smartphones and Chinese retro devices.

I agree with this one hundred percent. My New Nintendo 2DS goes with me everywhere. I play it almost daily. When everyone else is at break for work playing games on their smartphone, I'm over in the corner with a handful of people passing around my 2DS or playing multiplayer with several others who have 3DS's. We have handheld Smash Brothers tournaments every Friday.

Even without it being modded, it has the ability to play a decent amount of retro games through virtual console and the ability to play DS cartridges natively. It has the ability to take fantastic 3D photos and videos, Fire up the Korg synth app and make music. Actual music, not the stupid beat loopers you see on smartphones. You can tour the freaking Louvre for gods sake, in 3D and with stunning visual effects and audio recordings. I've never visited the Louvre, but I feel like I have because of my 3DS.

I bought the 2DS for my daughter. She's 11 and was just getting into gaming. She found out pretty quickly that she doesn't like the smaller screens, so she quickly migrated over to the Wii. I picked up her 2DS and started playing games. Once she saw me having a blast on it, she naturally took it back and I promptly went out and bought a second one for myself. And now we have a great time making Mario levels in Mario Maker for each other to try and complete. Or playing 2-player New Super Mario Bros 2. Or racing in MK7.

I think my wife is jealous and I need to go get a 3rd.

Judging it for its time? The Wii hands down. Legit you had wii, gc and tons of vc.

Then with probably the best homebrew scene any console has ever had, you could expand the games you could play on the wii pretty much infinitely. I still use the wii a lot which is more than I can say about my wiiu or 3ds.

i don't really get the appeal of getting attached to a device when what matters are the games, so whichever system can run most stuff (native or emulated) wins imo, so i'll say Xbox Series X as it's the console that can emulate most stuff, as well as most stuff Xbox since the Original one, plus modern titles

Here's how I judge what's considered to be the best system of all time: you decide to spend the rest of your life on a tropical island with a cabin. You hunt for food, get your own water, and you play video games in your spare time as well as watch anime.

With this in mind, I'd have to pick an OG Phat modded PS3 with the capacitors that apparently are the real cause of the YLOD being replaced with better ones and using a better thermal solution than the stupid lead-free solder shit they put in there, and thus Phat PS3 has to be the model with FULL PS2 BC. As in, it has the EE SoC in it fully functional and everything, no emulation, works just like a PS2 did, just without the fear of the dreaded DRE!

Now, take the entirety of the PS1-PS3 library of
games, toss the homebrew that the PS3 can run into there as well, and you have a system that can play so many games that it boggles the mind, and may very well outnumber the amount of games a modded Wii U could play while still being able to play most of that system's homebrew library via emulation.

Of course, nowadays one could just use a PC for everything including PS3 games, but the title says best console of all time.

• Commercial success - Everyone and their mom had one, price was affordable then and it's almost unbeatable now
• Wide variety - over 7000 official releases (1/3 of that minus 10%, to roughly exclude different regions and updates, is still 2000)
• Good "hard" specs - chiefly power efficiency: the DS Lite is the last Nintendo console to date that stands a chance of lasting a whole day of gaming
• Innovative - two screens, resistive touch, and for most owners their first wifi product
• Good gimmicks - except for a few gratuitously touch-only titles, the above innovations were generally well implemented and not overused
• Modding - Flashcards available for less than the price of a commercial game (then state of the art 2GB microSD not included), maybe not at mainstream electronics stores but at least at most electronic fairs and independent online shops - an absolute revolution compared to any such product for older or newer systems (even for those who understand the technical causes, it's still baffling that a high quality DS flashcard used to cost 6 to 20 units of yout favorite international currency while a GBA one costs at least double)
• Homebrew - 4 MB of memory may not be much compared to the PSP or the Wii yet a lot more was done with that (also considering that, lacking an operating system or surrogate of it, almost no programs are tools for the console itself); while DPG may be a major hackjob the photo, text, and music parts of Moonshell compete and/or beat the PSP; and I dare you to find a console with a working email or calendar program that actually got used

The Wii comes very close for give or take the same reasons, so probably does the PSP but I didn't have one back then...
