SEGA will be giving Sonic games longer development cycles to hopefully result in better games

sonic-forces.jpg

SEGA of America hosted a special livestream recently, the first Sonic Official stream of this year, where some of their team discussed Sonic-related news. Aaron Webber was there to answer questions from fans in the chat, with one of the most popular ones being why it's been so long since there was a new Sonic game announcement or reveal trailer. Webber's response was that SEGA used to release Sonic titles on a yearly basis, but the company decided that they no longer wanted to rush games out, and made the choice to give each game a longer development cycle. He also says that the team is incredibly excited about what's in store, but they can't say anything more at this time. The last time a mainline 3D console Sonic the Hedgehog game released was Sonic Forces, back in 2017.

Great idea, imagine how great games would be if they got longer develpment time, unfortunately in today's day and age people want new games instantly and don't want to give developers time.

Good Sonic games can be made as illustrated with Colours and Generations but the issue with Sega is the obsession of putting out Sonic games regardless of quality which hurts the rep of the IP. Hopefully we'll get some decent Sonic shit other from the Taxman.

So essentially they are saying that their games where shit. Well...who am i to disagree.

Still, i still don't think that giving developers more time would magically make Sonic games better,
they will just have less bugs and that's it. Its who and what is being done and not how slow or fast.
Idea matters not time.

Well this is great news but I’ve learned to keep my expectations low so I’m thinking whatever they come up with is just going to be a rehash of the same ole modern Sonic gameplay we got tired of since Generations.

I wish they’d:
1. Not build levels around the boost mechanic and create bigger explorable levels (Sonic Adventure 2 style, I know I know)
2. Bring back Sonics friends (Tails, Knuckles, +Insert female) with different gameplay styles (no Classic Sonic, leave Classic Sonic to the people that did Sonic Mania)
3. The modern 3D games lack charm so somehow add charm to the levels/story
4. No more Wisps or Deadly Six

Like I said, I’m not getting my hopes up. Something tells me that Sonic Team/Sega aren’t passionate about the series and they only show up for the pay ‍♂️

look, hmm
"Development of Sonic Forces began shortly after Sonic Lost World was completed in 2013 under the codename Project Sonic 2017"
2013.. 2017, isn't 4 years enough?
A majority of that time was towards Hedgehog Engine 2, the dev time they probably had was closer to a year and a half

When I saw the Sega documentary Sonic was supposed to be the "Mario killer" unfortunately Sega dropped the ball and was cooperative I heard Sega Japan and Sega America wasn't working well together.

Sonic isn't really going to appeal to anyone nowadays I heard of Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania but I never played them. Sonic Generations was pretty good on PS3. At this point they need to retire Sonic

Quite a few rumors are saying that the next game is gonna be a Sonic Adventure 1 remake, (Ryan Drummond, Sonic's voice actor from that game implied he was returning on his Twitter, Sega rehired some old devs from that period, Iizuka says he wants to remake it, and some music demos leaked of Sonic Adventure music in a Sega email (http://www.tssznews.com/2020/01/06/rumor-demos-surface-for-future-sonic-adventure-project/)). Slaphappy seems to be implying it's just gonna be another shoddy port job like the ps3, 360 and Steam version was, though all info seems to be pointing to it being a brand new remake like Ratchet and Clank ps4, or the Resident Evil remakes, which are basically as hard as making completely original games.

The remake will need to run on PC, Switch, PS4 and whatever Xbox thing Microsoft has at the time of release.

Is way more complicated to make a gane work well on so many things than when they just had to worry about it running on the Dreamcast.

while they take time to code and make assets they have the worst part of the game already done, they have the story, the characters, the level layouts and everything, most of the hard works is already done, so no it isnt as hard as to make a brand new game from scrach because you have the bases for everything, just need to make better mechanics and make it preety, this is why activision remade 3 spyro games in like 1 years and half.

TBH Sonic needs to die and another running sega franchise needs to be sega's mascot. Probably persona or bayonetta
Or at least, get a new devteam for Sonic games. Sonic Team is just way too inexperienced and incompetent
While they're at it fire iizuka too. Every game made with his supervision since generations has been a nostalgiafest with shoehorned wisp gimmicks in and green hill for the 90th time.

More time for the american marketing team to be afraid of fans reactions to a serious, original Sonic game and force changes to dumb it down ( a la Forces and lost world ) then shove some pointless nostalgia and weak comedy into it for good measure

They should just have dimps develop them at this point
isn't that the majority of mario games as well? how many times have you seen the mario 1, 2 and 3 sprites in recent games

uhh odyssey's 8bit sections?
Mario Maker 2?
The Mario and Sonic Olypmpic game?
That's all i can think of. plus 2 out of those 3 had a reason to exist (odyssey for more moons, Mario Maker 2 because it was a style in the original and sequel)
meanwhile green hill
Sonic Mania
Sonic Forces
Sonic Lost World (windy hill is literally just a callback to green hill)
Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed
the Sonic Dash mobile game
Sonic Generations, 3ds and 360/ps3
only 2 of these had a good reason to be there, and even then Mania's excuse is because of, you guessed it, iizuka holding the team back because nOsTALgIA

mario 3d world/land had mario 1 sprites in some of the skyboxes and backdrops, your scope isn't wide enough. pretty sure mario sunshine did as well

2. Bring back Sonics friends (Tails, Knuckles, +Insert female)
+insert female? you mean cream, amy and rouge?
