I'm trying to use gbarunner but when I open it I get a white screen and BINF3DS sd card. I have the bios.bin on the root of my sd.

Yes I agree... All my flashcards like my DSTWO are breaking apart and it's nice to finally retire using them to avoid them fully breaking

DS games are ran natively, as you're in the actual DS/DSi mode (on 3DS/2DS).

Does this means I can run ROM hacks of DS games? (i.e. Mario Kart DS Deluxe) I tried this and it was left on a white screen.

Install the TWiLight Menu++ Updater, and then update the nds-bootstrap nightly.
After that, go into TWLMenu++ settings, then change Bootstrap to Nightly.
After that, try the ROM hack again.
