Ther are a tutorial? xD
But, without a nand backup? o_o

Nand backup is basically the first step of that tutorial (after hardmodding it). The idea is to take a modern firmware and basically alter it to a slightly different (but still exploitable) firmware.

Why do so many people's friends and cousins seem to think it's ok to update other people's 3DSs? Do they not respect other people's property?

Never lend your systems/peripherals to your friend(s).

I've learned my lesson a long time ago, lend my X360 to a friend and he got red ring of death from not turning off the system for a whole month -_-...

Made him replace it.

My suggestion for this in the future would be to keep emunand up-to-date with the latest firm (needs to to play online now, anyway) and set up autoboot with a very specific hotkey.

But yeah, I would definitely recommend getting a hardmod. Commission someone in the UK to do it if you can't do it yourself: It's definitely worth it and fixable.

That's why I use my USA N3DS XL and Japanese O3DSLL as "main and legalized" units and older O3DS and O3DS LL as "homebrew and warez" units. I essentially let little kids and noobs play on the legalized ones while I play on the "warez" ones, keeping them safe from accidental/prank updates.

And most people will accept updates without even reading the warning screens because that's exactly what they do with their computers, smartphones and other internet connected gadgets.
A friend of mine only let me borrow his Xbox (the 1st one) and Xbox360 after he made sure that I actually knew what to do and not to do with his hacked units, that's the only sensible - yet risky - way to borrow hacked units to other people.

I don't agree with wasting my own additional funds for other peoples amusement. If I purchased a 3ds for myself it will be FOR MYSELF. If younger idiots want to play with a 3ds tell mom/dad/god parents to go buy them one.
