The Check Mii Out Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, the News Channel, the Weather Channel, and the Nintendo Channel are all going out of service on June 28th. The Wii Shop Channel and the Internet Channel will still be up, along with online play and things like Netflix. What are your thoughts on this? Did you use any of these, or did they just sit on your menu?

Update: The channels have officially gone down.

Back in 2006 the news channel and the Weather channel was quite a novelty, I was actually mesmerized by the rotating globe and the news and wheather from all over the place, but I can't say I ever used it much.

They certainly look redundant nowadays with all the smart phones and tablets and PCs lying around.
As soon as I flip my phone open I get a glance at all I need to see, definitely I couldn't be bothered to boot the Wii just to check the weather.
Also that everybody vote channel was a nice novelty, I tried it, kept in on my system for a couple of months and deleted it.......

So I can't say I'll miss any of those.........Netflix on the other end, still gets plenty of use !

Hopefully we'll be able to remove those unused channels from the system menu, I'd hate to have them sitting there and take space while doing nothing !

Personally i use forecast and news channel, so this stings a bit. However, seeing that NAND space will be freed, it softens the blow. A warning though, the NAND space saved is NOT visible to the end user (ie it is reserved from the hidden portion of nand, used by the wii OS). Still, there are benefits to be had, for Opera Wii (i think) and especially for apps that use NAND as virtual memory (like the latest Not64 mod).

Hopefully we'll be able to remove those unused channels from the system menu, I'd hate to have them sitting there and take space while doing nothing !

You can already uninstall them with wad manager 1.7. If you have the wads for those 2 channels (either via ModMii or NUS downloader or other means), point the app to them and select UNinstall, then hit A.

I'm suprised anyone ever used those channels. As far as news and weather are concerned, there are probably better sources than a Wii one could use, Everybody Votes was pretty "ehh..." and the Nintendo Channel was the equivalent of Nintendo's Youtube account. I was actually considering getting rid of the news and weather ones to save space. :P

I used to use the news channel alot and the weather from time to time . I wish someone could port the news channel to the pc , and make it look exactly the same.

Back in 2006, I thought it was so cool that my game system could tell me the weather. But, now, it's become outdated, and I seriously doubt that people use their Wii for weather forecasts. It's time to move on.

saw this
http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=200131

and then this

letterbomb blocked?
I don't think so, since Letterbomb works offline. I think all they are doing is just literally turning off the switch at their end and we will just get error codes using those services.
If you read on it said "However, services other than those mentioned above, such as the Wii Shop Channel and “Today’s Accomplishments” on the Wii Message Board, will remain available." They can't take the Message Board out since games actually use that (offline)

Yes I will miss the weather channel. While I didn't start my wii up to check the weather, I did when I was already on it for another reason. The news channel was ok, but I found it faster to use a regular browser. I will also miss the Nintendo channel but I think they have stopped adding content to there anyway. It has went downhill in the past year ever since the announcement of the WiiU.

I never used the email aspect but I always wanted to lol. It would block letter bomb, however there is win program to bypass the need for a online wii. So that will still work.

As for the everyone votes or check out the miis, I used both. The voting was just a quick 2 min interesting to look at. I only did it perhaps once a month if that, still was interesting though. The check out the mii's was handy to grab new Mii's and make the games that used them more 'interesting' instead of always running into the same old defaults. I probably grabbed a hundred or two, and a whole lot faster than making your own.

Anyway I will miss most of them, but there are ways around it/ substitutes (email elsewhere, wheather on the internet channel if you *really* wanted to do it on your wii though I won't bother, etc) and it is not "extreme" but still a shame they have to remove it. And a sign of the times. I thought they would leave everything alone for a year or so. I am dreading what they axe next. Most likely online multiplayer games. :/

Regardless it is depressing and a warning I had better pick up conduit if I ever want to play multiplayer with that like I always wanted to lol before they axe that. And probably Call of Duty Black Ops.

Thank you, I was aware of that.
But I never liked to mess around with system wads.
I used it though to get rid of the duplicate channels if memory serves me right.

Anyway, I was wondering if Nintendo itself would provide an official update to delete obsolete channels, I believe currently there is no way to manually remove them trough the Wii system menu without having to use homebrew to achieve that.
And who knows, that little extra memory could be channeled into doing something else....

Taking away the Nintendo Channel is stupid. It's their best way via the console to promote products. Also, overall this is a dick move to force people to buy Wii U consoles. another nail in the coffin when it comes to what"s left of my love for Nintendo.

I never really made use of them, besides the occasional demo that the Nintendo Channel had. Other than that, all those channels were pretty much useless to me. Hell, I should uninstall them to give me more room on my NAND.

It's gonna suck for games that relay on the WiiConnect24 service for their online. IE. Rock Band 3 and Guitar Hero (not sure which one it is)

Yes, because if you don't have the Nintendo Channel, you have to buy a Wii U.

Keeping the servers up costs money.

I'm just disappointed that ConnectMii won't work anymore.
