I set up my wii today on a 4:3 TV, so did all the settings accordingly and began playing Zelda. I then wanted to see what it was like on my widescreen TV, so I changed the setting to 16:9 (and 60 Hz) in the dashboard. However, I'm pretty sure it's still in 4:3. For one thing, the wii isn't sending the signal to my TV to automatically adjust to widescreen. When I look at the TV adjust options in the zelda options, the middle box is a narrow rectangle, while the outer two are square. When I Z-Target my TV adjusts, and cuts off the top and bottom borders you get, but this looks wrong and the switching is very annoying.

Is it because I started playing the game in 4:3, or is my TV/Wii crap?

My widescreen looks fine on my 56" and 42" TV's. But is your tv a true wide screen? I would say get a better TV and component cables and enjoy Zelda to its fullest

I have selected 16:9 on the Wii dashboard settings.

My TV is an 8 year old panasonic. There is no manual widescreen option. I just have to change the aspect to automatic. All my other products, including DVD players, send a signal that tells my TV it's a widescreen signal. This allows my TV to adjust automatically and is confirmed when the "WIDE" logo appears on the TV briefly. I guess the Wii doesn't send this signal.

I wasn't actually aware of this signal, but a read of wiki says that this only occurs over digital transmission (It specifically refers to broadcast, but I'm sure DVD players can do it). However, my old man owns two panasonic widescreen sets (bought 3 and 4 years ago) and I know why you are getting those bizarre results. My dad's set however has the option to select the necessary modes.

QUOTEWhen I look at the TV adjust options in the zelda options, the middle box is a narrow rectangle, while the outer two are square. When I Z-Target my TV adjusts, and cuts off the top and bottom borders you get, but this looks wrong and the switching is very annoying.

The panasonic sets have a display mode called JUST. This mode is designed to display 4:3 pictures in a 16:9 mode and looks reasonably accurate (and it works rather well 98% of the time, usually only failing when the camera pans sideways and you see the algorithm in action). It acheives this by leaving the centre of the image natural, and slowly stretching out the sides. This is why the centre square looks squashed (as this part of the image is unchanged) and the edge squares look adjusted. It also removes a bit of the top and bottom of the images to make the picture look correct.

I'm surprised your tv doesn't allow you to select. Both these sets allow you to select from AUTO (4:3/JUST), 4:3, JUST, ZOOM, S-ZOOM, 16:9 and 14:9 (yes, 14:9, is pretty much 4:3 with the top and bottom cropped slightly and less black bars at the side) if my memory serves correctly. You are definitely going to need to get your set to know its in 16:9 to get the image displayed correctly.

EDIT: 16:9 should work fine over any cables because the image is still 640x480 (or 720x576 for us PAL users), all they do is modifiy the pixel aspect ratio.

Thanks Lukeage, that was very informative. It made me wonder why my TV didn't have a 16:9 setting. So I took another look, and scanned through the aspect options while on the Zelda TV settings to see how the squares were affected. Turns out that it does have one, but panasonic decided to call it "FULL" instead of 16:9. My excuse is that I've always used the automatic setting, and have never had a problem. Thanks again for your help, and sorry for the bother.

While we're on the topic. Can you tell me whether PAL TVs and Wiis support progreesive scan? On wikipedia it said that the wii could only support 480i, 480p and 576i but I really hope it's wrong.

If your PAL tv supports progressive input, I can assure you that it will hand 480p perfectly. In fact, it seems less likely that a devices can do 576p even when they are sold in PAL regions.

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
