And did you try with the available kernel on the webpage shown by the flashcard sticker itself? (It doesn't matter than apparently an image for a 2020 model was shown there, kernel should be compatible after all).I tried a lot of different versions, but none of them worked. Is it possible to update the kernel? I think this is a very old R4 and is not compatible with the latest firmware on my 3DS.

Also, have in account that microSD card for the flashcard must be always formatted on FAT32 (32kB size cluster, primary partition, MBR table). Use guiformat or Mini Tool Partiton Wizard to format it, if you will; or better perform the quadruple format technique + H2TestW analysis (to discard any kind of damage/fault on the microSD card).
And, from the kernel downloaded zip, extract/copy the three folders and the R4.dat file to the root of that microSD card.
If nothing of this finally works, then your flashcard is possibly a bad clone/copy from the original R4i SDHC Gold Pro model. But, possibly a custom kernel, like WoodR4i or YSMenu, could works for your card.
You also should check if the DS-mode functionality works normally or is broken, opening Download Play > Nintendo DS (or System Settings > Internet Settings > NDS connection settings). If it's broken (an error, or just a black, or white, full screen appears), a solution is found here.
In other hand, just for clarify some facts that you assume:
- 2016 is not an oldest model of flashcard
- Last time that Nintendo blocks DS flashcards was finalizing 2013 year (aprox.), with the 7.1 system version. Then, your flashcard isn't blocked by Nintendo for sure (supposing that is an original flashcard)... And, if you (would) have your console modified (with B9S + LumaCFW), then all kind of "DS mode flashcard type blocking" is patched by default.
- Updated kernel has nothing to see with a "possible way to avoid a flashcard blocking by a system update". For that hypotetical case, just a flashcard firmware update can works (kernel != firmware). But I could bet that is not your case.
Is your console modified (with B9S + Luma CFW) or not? This is what I got after quadruple format and use the R4i-V4.0b kernel. Any advice? I'm almost giving up.
=/

No, my console is OG, without any modification. Yes, the DS function is working perfectly. Is your console modified (with B9S + Luma CFW) or not?
Have you made the test that I said here?
Ok... Then, for some reason, your flashcard seems to be blocked, indeed, or perharps is (internally) damaged/bricked.No, my console is OG, without any modification. Yes, the DS function is working perfectly.
Yeah, I think the R4 is bricked or damaged, I tried on another DS and got the same result. Thanks for you support! I'll take a look at this page.Ok... Then, for some reason, your flashcard seems to be blocked, indeed, or perharps is (internally) damaged/bricked.
Have you (or could you) try to test it on another console (a DS/DSi, or a modified 3DS/2DS) to check if actually works? And also, have/could you try to open another DS flashcard or original DS cartridge on your console?
On the other hand, I reccomend to you modify your console (with B9S + Luma CFW) if you will, of course
