You seem to forget that Pikmin has had a multiplayer mode before.

Online multiplayer would just be like local multiplayer... except online. It's not that hard.

EDIT: Eh fuck a duck Veho you sly bastard.

I was never really crazy about multi-player in Pikmin anyway, I was all about the single-player.

    One game mode?
And you'd either have to stuff loads of people and pikmin on one big map, or have loads of small maps at one time
    Just seems pointless to me.

This is certainly bad news. I was hoping for at least some form of online multiplayer. Local Multiplayer is fine and all and it's definitely more fun playing with someone who is with you but It's hard to justify no online play in this day and age, especially for the reasons Miyamoto gave. I mean, I love Nintendo but come on, why can't they see that online is a key feature in games today? If New Super Mario Bros. U doesn't include online I will definitely rethink buying a Wii U (at least till a price cut ) as I was most looking forward to playing the levels with a friend who lives in another country. I let them off with the Wii but Nintendo promised to focus more on online with Wii U but right now Miiverse isn't good enough to make me buy a new console. :/

Online gaming has had to deal with differing internet speeds and latency, even with the more powerful connections available to the public today. Differing in such a way that games cannot simply dump their data onto the internet to the other players because by the time each player receives that data, the game is not in that prior state anymore, but has moved onto the next state in game logic. Because of this, developers have had to implement a "guessing" routine alongside their "exactness" routine, where every so often, each player would get exactly what is needed, but the majority of the time they get guesses based off of the exact data. Guesses don't require nearly as much data.

So, just how much data is being juggled around with Pikmin 3? Is there more to each pikmin than having a position, orientation, trajectory, etc as well as the game environment that wouldn't allow the ability for guessing?

some games are built for online play from the very beginning. Others are not. Anyone that thinks that because other games of the same genre can do something, then all games of that genre can do it simply does not understand the complexities of game development, as each game is different.

Someone like me who has a ton of friends going to college AND love pikmin, I'd sure as hell love me some online play. Stop acting like it's not an issue. If a game does well with online, removing it doesn't add, it only inhibits the game's full potential. See the mario party series. Obviously playing with randoms would be miserable, but being able to play with friends, negates that.

Options, options, options. Online multiplayer is something that should be endorsed IMHO. Especially Nintendo, who hasn't made a single console with a working online network features (thus far) compared to competitors. I'd see online as a good selling point for people with long distances in between friends. And why not for everyone else too? Mostly people start missing out on something when they try it for the first time (dial-up modem gaming vs ADSL/newer specs anyone?).

Hopefully we'll see a time, when it's possible to add new features afterwards. And that people really do it.

Oh, wait. I guess it's DLC in a way nowadays.

so no one sees syncing animations for 100 pikmin - collecting stuff and fighting each other over the internets as a difficult task? how many players can you have in online FPS?

No you don't because the maps are spread out over several kilometres reflecting a battle of great scale, which includes vehicle combat and people parachuting into the battle all over the place. They aren't all locked into one room together fighting it out.

Also I suspect many MMO's may support upwards of 256 players even. MMO's such as DC universe online, which is also available on the PS3.

    For free.

I'm not happy but not surprised.

I just hope they do not come with that trophy shit to hide the lack of online multiplayer (like vita did with modnations)

To be honest, I never saw Pikmin with Online Multiplayer. It just doesn't 'fit' with the game. Local multiplayer will be more enjoyable.

I find it funny how so many people before were clamoring for the Nintendo Network (with quite a few adamant that it would best Sony and Microsoft's services)... until they pull a stunt like this, and then suddenly online support is unnecessary and burdensome.

The fact it's such a problem that you would actually complain about it is kinda funny tbh. It's just pikmin. Multiplayer for it sucks anyway, why waste time and effort putting it online? That takes resources that don't need to be used. They could instead focus on giving a game that DOESN'T suck online, better multiplayer capabilities.

It is typical of this place. Before graphics didn't matter at all, then 1080p was the holy grail, now graphics dont matter again.

If Pikmin 3 had online play half the people here would be masturbating all over each other with glee.

But no it doesn't matter AT ALL, its downright impossible and absurd to even suggest a game like Pikmin 3 would have online because it's so advanced compared to everything else that has ever come online before it.

HUNDREDS OF PIKMIN? IN AN ONLINE MATCH? OVER THE INTERNET? MY GOD ARE YOU INSANE?!?! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE, MIYAMOTO SAID SO, SO SHUT UP!

    It's hilarious really.

Oh darn, now you'll have to play some other game with a bunch of foul mouthed 12 year old strangers.

I was actually hoping this game didn't have multiplayer. Multiplayer games always end up with crap single-player compaigns. :(

    Riiiiiiiight.

Also, it's worth pointing out that Pikmin 3 (like 2 before it) still has multiplayer. So, you know...
