No Online Multiplayer for Pikmin 3

I was actually hoping this game didn't have multiplayer. Multiplayer games always end up with crap single-player compaigns. :(

Riiiiiiiight.

Also, it's worth pointing out that Pikmin 3 (like 2 before it) still has multiplayer. So, you know...
That's Valve. They do everything right (bar ricochet).
Also, local multiplayer is OK, when a game has (decent) online multiplayer that seems to be all the devs focus on.

Wait, did anyone expect online multiplayer?

As awesome as playing a game that requires some strategy with an 8 year old is, i'd pass.

No online multiplayer?
No problem.

Someone like me who has a ton of friends going to college AND love pikmin, I'd sure as hell love me some online play. Stop acting like it's not an issue. If a game does well with online, removing it doesn't add, it only inhibits the game's full potential. See the mario party series. Obviously playing with randoms would be miserable, but being able to play with friends, negates that.

The fact it's such a problem that you would actually complain about it is kinda funny tbh. It's just pikmin. Multiplayer for it sucks anyway, why waste time and effort putting it online? That takes resources that don't need to be used. They could instead focus on giving a game that DOESN'T suck online, better multiplayer capabilities.

I'm sure it's very funny, I guess. But I loved the multiplayer and challenge mode for pikmin 2. I see no reason how simply letting people play together is in any way, deterring the single player. They complete single player. Now make local co-op, online. My happiness does not take away from yours. >_>

so no one sees syncing animations for 100 pikmin - collecting stuff and fighting each other over the internets as a difficult task? how many players can you have in online FPS?

MAG on the PS3 did 256 player online against each other just fine several years ago. :)

Miyamoto said "in the situation of Pikmin, for example, since you would have lots of individual, small creatures, the Pikmin, whose every movement and location is going to be really important in the game, it would be very difficult to sync up over an internet connection." Miyamoto, however, stressed that the local co-op would still be present.
I don't see how that would be an issue in online play, but not in local co-op. If it's not a problem in local co-op, it shouldn't be one in online.

Maybe you need to coordinate your actions with the other players, and Nintendo is still refusing to allow voice chat in online games?

Three words... Call of Duty

Let me just go down the list here... Mass Effect 3 (people's qualms with the ending aside), Bioshock 2, Rayman Origins, the Starcraft series, Uncharted 2 (thanks to Emigre for that), Dead Rising 2, etc. etc. Valve isn't the exception here.

Sure, some developers do spend an uneven amount of time focused on a game's online multiplayer mode over its singleplayer campaign (though the same has happened for local multiplayer games too). Some is the key word here.

I find it funny how so many people before were clamoring for the Nintendo Network (with quite a few adamant that it would best Sony and Microsoft's services)... until they pull a stunt like this, and then suddenly online support is unnecessary and burdensome.

It is typical of this place. Before graphics didn't matter at all, then 1080p was the holy grail, now graphics dont matter again.

If Pikmin 3 had online play half the people here would be masturbating all over each other with glee.

But no it doesn't matter AT ALL, its downright impossible and absurd to even suggest a game like Pikmin 3 would have online because it's so advanced compared to everything else that has ever come online before it.

HUNDREDS OF PIKMIN? IN AN ONLINE MATCH? OVER THE INTERNET? MY GOD ARE YOU INSANE?!?! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE, MIYAMOTO SAID SO, SO SHUT UP!

It's hilarious really.
Hahaha hilarious indeed. Basically you've just made a brief escription on how gamers act. It's amazing how most of them doesn't even know what they want. XD

Typical GBAtemp, bitching about things before even considering the factors involved.

If Pikmin 3 did have online, the lag that would be there would effectively ruin the game. In an RTS, units have a predetermined path that are calculated by the computer. With Pikmin, there is a lot of data that would need to be transferred for each individual Pikmin (100) and Olimar since they do not move in a set path. The game would have to transfer character position data all at once for each Pikmin over the network. It's simply not feasible with the current system.

Everyone comparing this to an RTS clearly has never played Pikmin as they don't work in the same way.

Before anyone brings up the lack of lag in games on the PS3/360, most of the games there use P2P so it's not the same. With Pikmin, there can be no lag. When you move to the right, all the Pikmin are expected to instantly go to the right. Any lag would effectively ruin the game.

Sure with a lot of work, they can make it work but Pikmin 3 was not designed to have a multiplayer mode. Adding it on now simply isn't feasible like Miyamoto said.

As if other games (like, you know, shooters or fighting games) don't depend on exact precision and have managed just fine with online multiplayer for years now.

Explaining why the series has had one since the second game.

Because shooters and fighting games have to transmit data for 100+ characters over a network at the same time?

Actually, a few have done far more that while preserving the pinpoint precision essential to the experience, but that's beside the point.

The Pikmin series is fine and all, but it is not so unique and taxing that the world of online gaming is just not ready to handle it.

No actually, very few games have done so. FPS games only transmit data for the player character (as well as some other things). With Pikmin, tons of data for each individual Pikmin has to be transmitted which will clog the network.

Miyamoto is correct. It's simply not feasible to do so especially considering how far the game was in development at the time.

What? Miyamoto is talking like there haven't been any online RTS's for the last twenty years.

It's only logical because of the huge amounts of X Y and Z values transferred through the internet, not everyone will be playing on a 100Mbit/s connection. Adding online would only be a pain anyway since it wouldn't bring anything new to Pikmin.

The game is based around physics so it's absolutely crucial for the game to know the exact positions of the playable character, enemies and other objects being rendered both on and off screen.
This isn't like an mmorpg where every singe player have their own connection, and it isn't like an ordinary RTS either because the objects also have height positions and which are dependent on real time synced physics and not simple button presses and commands. The outcome isn't pre calculated, calculations must be synced on the spot.
It would become completely unplayable if one of the players didn't have the needed Internet speed for this game.

Also the game is already confirmed to have online interaction for speed runs etc. through Miiverse.

I love how everyone complaining about no online mode ignores the presumption of innocence and instead goes all out "Guilty until proven innocent" on Miyamoto's reasoning, as if they know exactly how online games work. How many people here have actually made an online game to justify their complaints? All I hear is "well, this game does it" and "that game does it". That is not proof. That is an observation without know how it actually works. If we really want to know whether he is truthful or not, perhaps the best people to know this are those that actually make online games. If no developer calls out Miyamoto on his reasoning, then isn't it clear that perhaps he is right, and that Pikmin 3 could not have online mode for the very reason he says?

it's funny to ask a simple numbers question?
you are easily amused.

The joke is that MAG is one of the worst games of this generation. :creep:

Pikmin has always come across as a single player adventure to me, so no loss for me. I didn't like the muliplayer in pikmin 2 - if I wanted to play, I'd do the single player mode.

It certainly affected the SP side of Mass Effect 3 for the worse.
