https://github.com/sammyboyb/nintendon-t/issues/188 << here people reported it, at least the first one described the very same behavior
anyways if developer shows up and care to explain how to read debug output with usb gecko i could try it
theres geckoreader, though it probably wont help you much, resident evil 4 has to be in a "ARStartDMA" exception list for it to work at all, I remember having it to move once already to make it more stable but it never got fully stable and I have no clue as to why, all I can suggest is maybe try a different storage device to load it from and hope the timings change enough that it will not crash anymore.

what is "arstartdma"? should it be edited in sources?
what is "log" option in settings? should i enable it or not? so far i see no difference in output, it ends with "jumping to 0x80003100"
not crashed so far
----
could it crash due to spindown?
maybe i will try again tomorrow to see if it spits something out when it crashes

arstartdma is a function that is handled by nintendont so no there isnt a settings thing.

like i said you have an sd card right? try putting the iso on the sd card and try to play it from there, like fix94 said its due to timings, your hdd probably misses the timings due to something being off.

what is "log" setting anyway?
i don't know how nintendont works but i know that i don't have such problems with other games with this hdd with wii and gc games with nintendont
i think i never had wii version of re4 crashed
i have an sd card and maybe it won't crash from sd card but it's not the point
i thought it could be resolved with hdd since i have usb gecko
but if there's no will to dig it, then it's ok with me, i have other means to play it and even with nintendont it seems does not crash often, at least during second half of a day

You could actually try what FIX94 said. He mentioned nothing about not _wanting_ to fix it. :/

he suggested to try a different storage but everything else (everything i tried which is not that many) does seem to work fine with this particular hdd
btw, it's wd my passport essential wd3200mew and i don't have anything else worth to try apart from sd card which would be a pain in the ass to use since i boot from 2gb card and bigger card does not work with boot2 so i would have to swap it (re4 is bigger than 2gb, not to mention that i have other stuff on it)
----
the guy said there were always a stability issue with re4, everyone else seems to tend to blame me and my gear

I don't think anyone was blaming you for anything. We don't have access to your Wii so we have to ask in order to help. :)

You mentioned the possibility of the drive spinning down and that can definitely cause it to freeze. I'm not sure how that drive is powered or what features it has but some enclosures include software that lets you disable any encryption or power saving. Also, if it's bus-powered rather than having a wall adapter it might need a Y cable to provide power from both ports.

maybe, but again, everything else is seem to work fine
hdd spins down when i play wii games from usbloadergx and it does not cause any problems
for example when wii reads dvd it can encounter read errors and it should not crash the game
anyways, if you or someone else is willing to forge a special dubug version or something that can use usb gecko to troubleshoot it i can do it
i'm definitely not diving into the source code myself, i'm not a system programmer or hardware engineer
at the moment i can only can hook usb gecko with geckoreader but what fix94 said gave me impression that it won't send anything upon the crash or information will be useless

wii games and homebrew in general are totaly diferent from nintendont, nintendont has unique usb code due to memory limitations so its has a custom usb code same way it has custom bt code due to limitations again thats why most fakee controller work on menu but not ingame.

so usbloader working with wii games does do anything for nintendont really really same way for any homebrew since nintendont codding is totaly diferent.

all people asked you was to try another device wich you seems to be keen on not even trying, if you have an sd card even 2gb one you can put the first disc in and try, you dont need both discs in to play the first half of the agme, it would be good for trying porposes.

dude, what's the point of trying a different device? i was trying serveral hours with this very same device today with ciso and it does not crash
it seems YOU do not want to hear ME
to my understanding fix94 acknowledged that there is INDEED an issue with re4 which he couldn't solve so far
and it's not clear to me if he is even up to solve it
and AGAIN i only could get debug output but if it's not needed then it's fine with me, like i ALREADY mentioned I DO HAVE other means of playing gc version of re4
and thanks for help but honestly i'm quite annoyed with you at this point, you only look for problems on my end and completely ignore any other possibilities like buggy nintendont and a chance to improve it with my help

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

and again, only re4 was crashing on me, and bio4 taikenban (japanese demo where you can play only up to village prologue)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

and it was crashing not only yesterday and in different places like first el gigante and others

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

also i left the game for some time on the bridge before that cutscene and it doesn't seem to spin down hdd, so i assume it's something else that causing crashes

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

here is the debug output (not crashed here):

maybe you can spot some oddities that could lead to crashing or whatever

dude, what's the point of trying a different device? i was trying serveral hours with this very same device today with ciso and it does not crash

Based on what FIX94 said, it has to do with timings. If you are getting a crash, trying a different storage device may change the timings enough that the crash won't happen anymore, and if so, good, it's probably your storage device being lazy about outputting data or whatever. Could be anything related to your specific device responsible for the issue.

As crazy as this sounds if it's an external hard drive sometimes something as menial as defragmenting it can actually cause the issue to disappear. I used to have random problems with a hard-drive I'd been using for my Wii for many years and eventually I backed everything on it up, wiped it, and cleanly restored everything to it, and all my problems went away.

The fact is, this sort of issue is difficult to reproduce, and most people don't have this problem. Take me for example, I have a 1TB USB 2.0 external drive I've been using for years and I went ahead and booted up RE4 on it and have been playing flawlessly for about 40 minutes now.

This is why something like this is treated as a user-side issue.

but why the problems only arise with re4?

wild guess: could it be that on some occasions game tries to allocate more memory than usual and fails due to nintendont presence?
i will try to play it usual way to see will it crash or not, maybe my wii is faulty which i highly doubt, but who knows

not sure what to tell you i played the entire game without a single crash and you can see people here even using wiiu injects can too, sometimes some issues only happen to some people an not others, i guess my hdd and sd card do all the correct timings, it could also be your wii usb reading that might have causes, i remenber a wierd case where somone here had crashes on certain agmes and everything was correct and we couldnt reproduce it, and then he used the same usb on a friends wii and he never got the crash and to this day no one knows why.

sometimes hardware is the fault or some wierd stuff that can be installed or wii memory starts failing, there are millions of small causes really.

The Gamecube had 24MB of SRAM. The Wii has the 24MB of SRAM plus an extra 64MB of SDRAM, which iis where the Nintendont code lives. The SRAM is dedicated completely to the game, AFAIK.

Are you talking about this? https://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Wii_Optical_Drive_Emulator

That is not a different storage device. That's a mod chip.

no, this -> http://iodd.kr/wordpress/
although mine is very old, i think mine is the very first model they had

it seems i have found a pretty consistent crash spot
save #3, you appear at chicken farm at night, go straight to cabin and enter big gate where you suppose to piggyback ashley, i start tapping Y while game is loading to open invertory as soon as possible
it will either show invertory or crash
IT WON'T CRASH ALL THE TIME, but it crashes there often for me, like 4 out of 5
if it didn't crash, open menu and RESET the game, don't load, but reset and then load #3 again and repeat
i tested it from sd card and from usb hdd, crashes from both

please someone test it, re4 north american version disc1

59 blocks separate re4 save (nintendont save image file G4BE.raw)
if it won't crash on invertory open then it is worth to try to run to the cabin, it can crash on cutscene
if not, then reset the game through game menu (start button) and load from title screen
