Why wouldnt they just be able to dedicate a 128 meg chunk of the flashmemory for the decompression of the rom, and then clear it when you are done playing? Im sure it would take a little bit longer to load the rom.. but you could get a lot more zipped roms in 768 megs, than you could uncompressed in 1gig.

I suppose that would work, but I think it would take more than just a little bit longer to load. Maybe only several seconds for very small roms, but probably more than a minute for big ones. In addition to reading and writing to the flash memory, which is already slow, it will take a lot longer for a 66mhz system with 4 megs of ram to decompress a file than it will even on my slow-ass 650mhz PIII with half a gig of ram.

From the very beginning they have offered a simple, cheap, feature free product, and I don't think they will change that. Besides, 1 gig microSD cards cost $10, so I doubt that they would see this particular feature as being worth the trouble.

Back in the days of DOS and 486 66mhz systems, pkzip worked just fine.. and pretty fast too. Yes, flash card memory is cheap... But, its one less thing you have to drag around with you and switch. Its not a NEEDED feature... But then again, there arent any NEEDED features on the R4. Im plenty happy with what I have bought and if they never did an update again... as long as the rom compatibility stayed the way it is now, I would be plenty happy with it.

Granted, I still selfishly would like rom compression and a gamegenie like feature added to it. I know it can be done. I wish I knew how to program, I would do it myself.... If it was possible that is.

Yes, this isnt because of Firmware of R4, this is because you have low speed MicroSD.

Again, it isn't anything to do with msd speed - it's been tested on many different brands and it still runs at 2/3's of real speed : even on many different kingston japan cards.

YOU didn't notice it, but it's there and verified by lots of people.

rest0re, which games run slow despite downhill jam?

and homebrew compat is just fine. if the homebrew app supports dldi it'll work on r4. it all depends on the author making it compatible in this format. please inform yourself before whining

Woah, chill out dude. In fact, the R4's ROM compatibility is top notch, one of the best around. Homebrew compatibility is all right in my opinion (with DLDI). May I ask, what games have you experience slow downs?

yes, some of the homebrew can be patched to DLDI format but half the time it's incompatible with the R4, so i use my ninjapass X9

Which one ? Precise name of one homebrew app that supports DLDI and does not work properly on R4.

zelda DS
BloopsDS
AXE
Piano Vero DS
rPAINT
AmplituDS
BattleShipDS
whee!
Blackout
Dragon's LairDS
DrugWarsDS
DrummerS
Glider
eurotunnel
rag
Lemmings
pairs DS
mario bros
squash DS
TouchTouch Revolution

all not supported by the R4, do not support DLDI and never will but when patched work perfectly on the ninjapass X9 you can even try these homebrew now and try and put it on your R4, no matter what you do it will not load! i'm glad i still have a ninjapass

still fuck you r4team for not fixing these games...
according wiki.scorpei.com:
download play doesnt work on many games
tony hawk downhill jam: Slowdown in races on Kingston 1G (J), Sandisk 1GB (Taiwan), ADATA 512mb. 60 seconds by game's race timer = 74-89+ seconds in real time. (works with firelink okay)
castlevania portraits of ruin crashes... but it works on firelink for example (of course this is second hand knowledge according review)
0770 Kabushiki Baibai Trainer Kabutore (J) (WRG) Game crashes sometimes in dealing
0771 Age Of Empires : The Age of Kings (S) (Independent) Game crashs after the last mission of "Anne D'arco" campaign. Please confirm.
0844 Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (E) (Legacy) 1.06 Slowdown when many players are shown (on Kingston 1G (J))

so fix it.. i dont care about fucking skin modifications.. games are priority imo and download play...
edit: i own r4ds btw. and i love it, but i would really like to see something else than skin modifications in firmware (wow, who needs them anyway)
edit2: if flash2advance team would have somekind of skin ability in firmware or something i wouldnt go "aeuhass i want totally mod this skin lol i need to put my anime picture behind when i load game lol you suck) i think firmware update is great idea and stuff, but first priority is fix games and homebrew that doesnt work then skinning. or do you just "skin" your ds and dont care about games, lol

Actually, while most people get the slowdowns on DHJ(I do), some people don't, and so far there hasn't been any good explanation as to why.

I think it's a case of those people not noticing, rather than it not occuring (the same as some people using s-video/composite connections for consoles and thinking it looks just as good as RGB-scart or component).

To the discussion of what other games are slow, "
Bouken-Ou Beet: Vandal vs. Busters" hangs at a white screen for 20seconds before it boots - I posted about it not working and someone else tested and said it took 20seconds to boot on an r4 - I tested again and it did. I don't have the original or another flash cart to test if it is a r4 issue or not.

Well, your a bit of angry person are you not. I get slowdown in tony hawks as well. So what, it still works, and bottom line, every single card out there that uses MicroSD card has potential issues with slowdown of that game. MicroSD Memory is not the same speed as RAM or ROM chips in original cartridges. I for one am happy that I can play it without havign to spend 30 quid on it.
