Why wouldnt they just be able to dedicate a 128 meg chunk of the flashmemory for the decompression of the rom, and then clear it when you are done playing? Im sure it would take a little bit longer to load the rom.. but you could get a lot more zipped roms in 768 megs, than you could uncompressed in 1gig.
I suppose that would work, but I think it would take more than just a little bit longer to load. Maybe only several seconds for very small roms, but probably more than a minute for big ones. In addition to reading and writing to the flash memory, which is already slow, it will take a lot longer for a 66mhz system with 4 megs of ram to decompress a file than it will even on my slow-ass 650mhz PIII with half a gig of ram.
From the very beginning they have offered a simple, cheap, feature free product, and I don't think they will change that. Besides, 1 gig microSD cards cost $10, so I doubt that they would see this particular feature as being worth the trouble.
Back in the days of DOS and 486 66mhz systems, pkzip worked just fine.. and pretty fast too. Yes, flash card memory is cheap... But, its one less thing you have to drag around with you and switch. Its not a NEEDED feature... But then again, there arent any NEEDED features on the R4. Im plenty happy with what I have bought and if they never did an update again... as long as the rom compatibility stayed the way it is now, I would be plenty happy with it.
Granted, I still selfishly would like rom compression and a gamegenie like feature added to it. I know it can be done. I wish I knew how to program, I would do it myself.... If it was possible that is.
