So for those of us, a little on the challenged side, what does this do exactly?

So what's the difference between MTP and FTP?

mtp, i guess from a user perspective, when you connect your switch to usb, you just open an explorer window and drag and drop files. No need for using ftp programs to transfer data. (i know theoretically explorer can log into an ftp server too..but still..)

I hope this gets updated, there was a beta of this before.... but it didn't go anywhere, in fact the GitHub page says "abort" or something.

    nxmtp is closed source.
This is a free and open source alternative.

I guess it'd be much faster to transfer files through USB rather than wirlelessly through FTP.

Ftp can work thru USB too when the device reports itself as a network device.

MTP is the same protocol a ton of mobile devices, IE Camera's, Smartphones, and other storage devices use over USB (Or whatever connection) to communicate with each other or a computer for example.

    It's a pretty standard protocol.
