The whole point of the anime is that any Pokemon can be strong, regardless of type advantage and whatever else. Ash believes in the "inner strength" of Pokemon, and the typical "we can accomplish anything if we believe in ourselves" stuff.

Even in the games, it's true to an extent. You can go around with a Pokemon with perfect IVs, but if you come across someone who's properly EV trained an average Pokemon they can still beat you.
