How similar are the PS4 and Xbone?

In the thread about how the xbone x can not be easily equalled by PC hardware of the day several people expressed an opinion along the lines of "I have no interest in the xbox".

Now last generation there seemed to be little in it, I had a discussion on it http://gbatemp.net/threads/ps3-and-360-exclusives-a-discussion.360416/ even and most of what came out of that for me was that the PS3 might not have been "the RPG machine" like some considered it.

Now when it comes to this generation I am slightly less informed than I have been in the past. So while I had a look at http://gematsu.com/exclusives/ps4 and it came back with far more than I thought it might, most amusing for me is the PS4 games also getting PC releases like the xbox of years past, I still reckon there is some discussion to be had.

To that what sorts of things are defeating the notion of the xbone and PS4 being basically the same thing to you? It need not be games if you reckon the paid infrastructure of PSN is far superior to XBL or something. Or is it you mainly got the same as your friends so you can swap/borrow games, or I suppose play online is a thing to consider these days?
Had you magically got the other one would you have been able to have basically the same sort of time?

These days I'd say it's a combination of the "Exclusives" and "My friends bought it", although the "Friends bought it" is a lot more prevalent of a reason over exclusives since online play is basically a "must" for every game these days.

But, despite a lot of games releasing for both platforms and PC, you still can't just swap consoles and say the experience would essentially be the same. The PS4 does indeed have a vastly higher number of "console exclusives" than the Xbox One does, and the exclusives end up being relatively different genres when you go and compare game by game. Unless all a person plays is the occasional COD or FIFA or whatever, your experience will differ greatly depending on the platform you have. With the PS4, you might enjoy some Nioh or Uncharted 4, whereas on the Xbone you might like Gears of War or Quantum Break.

Being mainly a PC gamer and owning both consoles, I can say the experience on the Xbox One is vastly different than on the PS4, much like last generation.

In 2017 alone the PS4 will gain 91 exclusives to the XBONE's 24. The game library is understandably much larger on the PS4, and of course because more people own PS4s, your friends are more likely to own them, and the used game market is larger.

I can't see many reasons to go M$ this generation tbh.

Im mainly a PC gamer and at i got neither of them :).
But for me it was always about the exclusive games (mainly FF stuff) thought as you said more and more console exclusive games are released on PC too.
If you think back there was no way to even play Final Fantasy, Tekken and many many other JRPG's that changing since a while.
Anway if i would buy a console nowadays it would be a PS4 just because of all the Japanese exclusive games or a Switch because Nintendo ^^.

So i agree with x65943 especially if you have good PC i see no reason to even buy a Xbox One i would rather spend my money on a new GPU or so.

The thing with Xbox exclusives is that they're also possibly on PC so they're not true exclusives in the sense you can only get it on one platform alone. Sony and Nintendo have re-released their exclusive games on other Nintendo/PlayStation systems but those that want to play it have to buy their console or handheld.

Microsoft's marketing by making their exclusives available on PC and Xbox is genius but also stupid because it gives people a reason not to buy Xbox.

They're playing it safe in case we enter a future without consoles, they will still have a presence on PC. That's fine by me. I'd prefer if Microsoft just focuses on PC, while leaving Sony and Nintendo battling it out in the console race.

Anyways, I rarely use my Xbox One because there are simply no games for it. Main reason I'm not interested in the Xbox One X. Sure, I'll get "native" 4K (which not all games will be native 4K either), but with what games?
While with Sony, sure, Horizon Zero Dawn isn't native 4K, but it still looks damn beautiful on the PS4 Pro, and it's a great game.

Literally this. Not to mention if we count PC Master Race, you only have Halo 5 and Sunset Overdrive. Pretty much what x65 has, many more exclusives and more friends will have it.

Xbone is still better for multiplayer, and has a much better controller.

PS4 is actually starting to gain a lot of actually good exclusives whereas the Xbone doesn't have too much, unless you're a Halo nerd like me who bought an Xbone exclusively for the MCC (and later, Halo 5).

Both consoles used to be identical but PS4 is finally pulling away (in terms of uniqueness).

It certainly has the nicer controller but how is it better in terms of multiplayer?

I like the xbox one for the features like dev mode and backwards compatibility and game pass. I like ps4 for exclusives. It is similar to ps3 vs xbox 360 for me

I have both and for some reason I encounter more slowdown on ps4. not to mention that xbox one has more multiplayer exclusives than playstation. xbox has better multiplayer exclusives and playstation has better single player exclusives

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

although to be fair, ps4 games are coming to pc via ps now

Nicely summed up. Say, which PS4 model do you have that you encounter those slowdowns?

For an average gamer, there's very little difference between the Xbox One and the PS4. They effectively do the exact same thing. However, I recently bought a PS4 to play many of its exclusive games like Persona 5 and Kingdom Hearts and to play the more stable versions of games that are not so well ported to PC. Because the two consoles are so similar, the exclusives are pretty much the reason to pick one over the other. I have no interest in Xbox as none of its exclusives particularly interest me, and I think many feel the same way. That's why the PS4 is doing better than the Xbox One.

Most Nintendo consoles would be husks without its exclusives.

yeah, I feel it also doesn't help the fact that Microsoft pretty much announced that all of their games will come to pc. So unless you really hate the windows 10 store, you are not messing out on any exclusives

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
