Fortnite sees 3.4 million concurrent players at peak

Publisher Epic Games have released a statement that their massively popular multiplayer game Fortnite Battle Royale saw a record-breaking peak total of 3.4 million concurrent users on Sunday 4th February.

Fortnite Battle Royale is a sandbox co-op massively multiplayer game that sees individuals or teams pit against each other in a battle royale situation in which the last player or team are standing are declared winners. Players must scavenge the map for weapons and materials as a slowly progressing storm forces players to keep moving on into a smaller and smaller play field.

This peak player count of 3.4 million beats the record of 3 million players on its closest competitor - the fiercely successful and popular PUBG back in December of 2017. Though most of Fortnite's success can be contributed with it being free to play and availability on most platforms.

Epic Games said:
Fortnite hit a new peak of 3.4 million concurrent players last Sunday… and that didn’t come without issues! [...] The extreme load caused 6 different incidents between Saturday and Sunday, with a mix of partial and total service disruptions to Fortnite.

Are you a player of Fortnite Battle Royale or do you prefer PUBG? What do you make of the rising surge in popularity of these battle royale games and do you see them as a flash in the pan or a long term success? Let us know your thoughts below.

Just talking about my own experience on ps4 with this game, so far since i gave it try last year, no one has sent me insulting messages over the ps4 messaging system, no one has messaged me so far about the game nor they being killed, no one has complained not even on mics when playing squads with matched players, no one has tried to contact me over the internet to insult me about the game, so really, i dont know what the fuck you are talking about...
I mentioned the types of players these games attract, but I wasn't referring to anything about chat in that comment. I'm sure it's worse on PC, LoL was bad enough as a F2P without even having voice. Being worse on XBL is a given.

Well, you clearly started using chat as an excuse for disliking the game, so i went with that. Also, as far as i have seen, the community isnt toxic, or at no way near as toxic as the lol community, not even near the cod or bf community. Epic games are pretty nice developers and are pretty open about their stuff, so i have seen pretty positive stuff about the game.

Yeah I was more referring to "Battle Royale" games in general, I don't have enough experience with any of them in specific to point out the worst/best communities, but I don't care for their limited-in-scope gameplay enough to actually find out, either.

Well, one of them is actually free, you cant complaint that much when you are paying nothing and still having access to the "almost full" online aspect of the game.

There are lots of F2P games to compete for attention, though, including those with real progression. Path of Exile is the best F2P game hands down, IMO.

Never played fortnite but I do play PUBG on PC. I just never could get in to fortnites cartoon graphics, same
reason I don't like Borderlands.

I don't like Epic's grubby behavior with this game. I'm glad battle royale is free but the rest of the game was originally touted as such too. Charging 60 USD for a beta that will be free in the future doesn't sit well with me.

Have not got into all this.

@Xzi there is a line of thought that says the game creates the community. As a bad player in most MOBAs will tank you (what with there being some 3 per team) and the mechanics are obtuse to say the least (worse still the players actively ask the seemingly clueless devs for said mechanics) you have an instant creation of elitism and nonsense. Equally some also pondered whether MOBA/DOTA clones were what siphoned off a lot of the world of warcraft raid scene.
Anyway these games, what little I know of them anyway, can afford to downplay that one a bit, perhaps not as much as one that actively tries to stop that (the classic one being no kill counters so even if a character is purely a bullet sponge then at least they drew fire and that was better than having nobody) but enough that it could be more enjoyable than some previous efforts.

Re:"progression" then do I need that in my multiplayer game? Level playing field instances is surely not a bad way to set about creating a multiplayer game.

they need to have a strong line up on the launch titles too. I think they should move metroid prime 4 to the next console because by now it has been quite a while and there's no release date scheduled yet

  • realtimesave @ realtimesave:
well as far as metroid prime 4 is concerned, the next system probably is similar enough to the current gen they can probably easily just slap it onto a next gen cart and call it good :P
