Years ago, it was actually a viable option for watching videos if you had the patience to convert videos. I used to do it all the time. At one point I had the entire Futurama series on my DS.

Why is it no longer a viable option? YOu got a better portable player now? Or just dont travel as much?

Not often, But but another movie player is always handy and the DS is small enough to fit in my pocket

Personally, I'd like to see video's just on my PC or my TV. The quality is lower, and the DS(i) (XL) is too small for me.

When I first got into the scene here I tried videos on Moonshell on my DSL. Not sure if it's been fixed or what, but the fact that I apparently couldn't pause videos was a deal-breaker for me.

...if you take the time, watching subbed animes on the DS can be quite good. I for one used to convert and share Studio Ghibli movies way back when i had my own desktop (was only P3, but hey, it works well enough). I used to tweak my conversions and even redo it if i'm not happy with pixelation or stuff. plus i figured out how to enlarge the subs without taking too much space (although some of my early subs did take some screen space). and i used to split films into 5-10 minute chapters, mainly for access to chapters, and also so i can easily reconvert chapters which are too pixelated instead of reencoding the entire film.

i guess it's just the novelty of being able to watch my favorite films anytime/anywhere is good enough for me. plus i prefer DS over PSP, despite the gap in specs.

EDIT: here are some samples of my conversions. you can PM me if you want, and i'll share my mediafire links to anyone who wants one, especially now that GBATMW doesn't have any DPG downloads no more.

one of my last goals before i stopped converting was to figure out how to put the subs inside the bottom black bars, but i never got around to figuring that out. Would've been nice though. :/

I used to, but I've long since got an iPod Touch for those sort of things. The DS screen really isn't all that great for watching movies. I guess it would do if it's all you have, but its low resolution makes things a bit... blurry. Works fine for games and such, but not so much movies.

As I said previously, it's been some time since I tried moonshell at all. Does it now feature full playback controls, or is it still basically "Start from the beginning" and "Stop playback" ?

You know I really don't recall any moonshell having only start from beginning and stop playback unless the conversion is bad...or I believe if you play dpg2 on Moonshell2 it does that...but there is dpg4 anyways...

hmm. Perhaps I'm confused. I've never really understood moonshell that well anyways. When I first got it I did so as a media player. But lots of people apparently use it as a full on OS for their cards. I don't know if there's different versions of the program, or if I just don't use it to its fullest ability. For the record I only use it for mp3's presently, and that's because I already had it, as I understand that there are plenty of other decent mp3 players out there. I'm not at all interested in using it as an OS.
I also hear that some of the newest versions of the program run avi files sans conversion. If this is true then I may be far more interested in the program than before.

Usually I happen to obtain the various media *cough*anime*cough* through various means and they usually have softsubs, but luckily enough there is dpg4x which supports subtitles and you can change the subtitle size easily enough.

help me please, after my failed attempt to convert vob files with dpg4x, now every time that I close the program a log message says :

" See the log file C:\ Documents and Settings\username\DP4Xtemp\dp4x.log'for details "

And when I open the log file these messages appears.

WARNING: dpg4x is not available in your language, please help us to translate it.
WARNING: iconv not found. Subtitles encoding option disabled.

These 2 messages always appears after in the log file after i close the program

The only things I watched on it was when I didn't have my Creative Zen yet. And it was porn

Then the Creative Zen was used to watch series and again porn and now I have my PSP which I use to watch Anime (not realistic series, they tend to work better on my laptop).
My DS and Creative Zen are both less useful to watch videos than the PSP.

What's exactly is Creative Zen?
The videos that I watch in my DS are series like Smallville, Supernatural and Chuck, and a lot of animes..
