There was a bunch of 3d work done over at the tahaxan forums and I was working on some myself.
My stuff is currently halfway around the world though and was not much more than what was done in the link below.
It is pretty much all hex editor based and is certainly no tile editor level of ease:

@Chopders I am not kiwi(.ds) if that is what you were thinking.
Most of my work was based around no$gba 3d section (which I can not believe I forgot to link: http://nocash.emubase.de/gbatek.htm#ds3dvideo ) , my hex editor (educated guesses as to what does what and how to change it) and no$gba (essentially a glorified viewer).
The only real advantage to this is I am not locked to nsmbd (a lot of companies use their own formats for 3d: I ultimately intend to hack eragon for while the game is not great the engine is pretty good which could mean a total conversion hack).
You keep linking to that thread whenever someone asks for an English version but it seems as if I'm too stupid to get it because I don't see an English version there anywhere, just cryptic talk about "language files" which are nowhere to be found.
