Maybe not hardware- software. Ideas.
The thing is, every company is riding the Apple Train. They're all using Slide/Tap to unlock, all using that simple icon-grid, all trying to implement an Appstore, all with touchscreens and accelerometers with an included proximity sensor. Touchscreen keyboards and capacitive multitouch.
Even in Apple's other products, there are copies everywhere. The "i" was adopted by iriver. The concept of an all-in-one is sloppily slapped together by Sony. The iPhone, well, is the precursor to every phone on the market. It changed everything. It took away the Blackberry's keyboard and gave it a touch screen! Its shockwave touched everything.
If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then everybody must want to have anal sex with Apple's design studio while licking its products.
But yes. Apple did copy other company's things. The iPad is clearly influenced by so much, but you can barely tell. The iPod might have been influenced by Creative, but it's not so obvious.
But ask yourself this. Did they not innovate so much? They came up with the pointing device we all use. The mouse. They pushed USB. They gave the trackpad life. GUIs became a reality with the Macintosh.* Digital music players sprung into popularity with the iPod. Online music also popularized from the iTunes Store. Polycarbonate was IN, and when Apple switched to aluminum/black, so did everyone else. And can we all not forget the game changer the iPhone is? Android resembles something, does it not? Has not every company tried to make an Appstore?
Sorry, but Apple has a history for getting the short end of the stick. Just see how Windows popularized the GUI OS. The sheer amount of iPhone-lookalikes and iPod-esque players. And look at the HP Envy. Was their innovation for nothing?
But this time, Apple wants to do something about it.
Evil?
*Microsoft had taken this GUI idea of "windows" and moved icons to the left, changed toolbars to the right, and made the trash can a recycle bin. Ho hum. Their marketing was superior so they got the popularity. By popularity I mean monopoly. Bill Gates actually is a devilishly efficient genius though, unlike that monkey of a CEO Ballmer.
