Hi
I have read that the maximum size of hard disk usable to read xci file on a USB port is 2 TB formatted in exfat with a MBR volume
I wondering if it is possible to use a 3 TB Hard disk with a mbr volume with a 2 TB partition on it formatted in exfat file system
I try different configuration to make it work but I was not able at the moment. I think it follow all the prerequisite

The SX OS is scanning for ever and never show xci file in the root of that partition

Anyone has been able to make it work
I would like to use this drive instead of buying a new 2 TB disk

edit: still does not work with SXOS 2.7.1 beta

One of the major issues with SX OS hard drive support— or even the Switch in general is self powered hard drives. When you put the USB on the dock without the Switch, the hard drives will spin and has the power it needs. However, as soon as you dock the Switch. These hard drives go wonkey and blink/breathe as though they aren't receiving much power. There are people who got them working using Y cables, but I have not. There are people who got them working with partition. I have not.

The only way I succeeded is by using an older hard drive that's powered externally. It works via partition too. So your problem may be the same as mine. Get an external powered HDD. Format to exFAT and place your files on the root of the drive. You should be good to go at that point

Oh I forgot to mention the 3 TB hard drive I am using has it's own power cable attach to it
so it should not get power from the switch usb port

2TB is the limit
when you format it, make the 2tb partition primary
or just leave the unallocated space unformatted

This is what I have done
first 2 TB are in exfat MBR and the rest is unallocated
I put a couple of xci files in the root of the 2 TB partition and SXOS is scanning forever without displaying any

Have you been able to make it work like that ?

Try using mini partion wizard to set your 2TB partition to primary.

lmao, there aren't even that many games worth playing on Switch as of right now unless you just want to download everything and only touch 5% of them.

Yea that's the point, a lot of people like having entire collections of a console on a single drive

i have a 12 TB INTERNAL hard drive on an external usb dock, that has its own power supply.. simply by doing the 2 TB partition trick, SX os found my xci files no problem, and i was still able to format the other 10 tb to ntfs, and have had no issues :)
How you do that in steps?

under a partition manager program.. start the hard drive at empty and unallocated.., then you make a partition of around 2 TB with a exfat partition format. then you can set the remaining unallocated space to ntfs..

one note is that , you CAN NOT put the system to sleep with the drive plugged in, or the system will error out . you must fully exit the game thats running off the drive (cant suspend the game), then power off/disconnect the drive, then power the system off..

I just tried it with a 4tb drive with gpt and it’s works. I set one primary with 2tb and the rest as exfat for storage.
Try setting it as 1863gb. I believe that is the correct number for 2tb.

Can you tell me if this hard drive works in the latest version? I plan to buy this but don't know if it works or not? Thank you very much

have you tried fat32 just to see if you can get it to work, and not sure but do you have all the proper folders and stuff on the HDD

Ok I just try it again fo format in fat32 using the fat32 format tool
The volume is still in GPT
I put a xci file in the root of the hard disk
and another xci file in /sxos/xci/

both xci file are working properly when used from the SD card
It does the same thing scanning forever in a loop and the screen content is flashing on and off forever

I have a really old 80 GB drive and I do the same procedure and it work fine
Only with my big 3 TB drives + that it does this problem

I Try
3 TB WD My Book HDD (externally powered) - does not work
3 TB WD My Book Essential HDD (externally powered) - does not work
80 GB Acomdata HDD - working
64 GB Lexar USB stick - working
250 GB LaCie HDD (powered from USB) - working

I have a 4TB Western Digital USB 3.0 2.5" HDD which draws power FROM THE SWITCH and it is formatted as 4TB EXFAT partition and I can load XCI images I have on there with no issues.

I'll need to check the format type if GPT or MBR tomorrow morning (it's 2:20 am local time and I'm going to bed).
