Sony confirms they're working on a new console, patent potentially hints at backwards compatibility

ps (1).png

During an interview with The Financial Times--a business publication--Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's CEO confirmed that while they don't have anything official to say yet, they are working towards a new console release. "At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware" were his words. Of course, with four iterations of PlayStation systems so far, it's no doubt that Sony would eventually continue its success with gaming consoles. Such a claim shouldn't be a surprise, but it does beg the question as to when the next generation of hardware will actually begin to roll out, marking an end to the current PlayStation 4, which has been selling incredibly well, and if Sony will continue their hot streak.

Yoshida's comment also possibly ties into a document that Sony has filed. Within it is a patent for "remastering by emulation", which would allow for "legacy game software" to be remastered for a "higher resolution display". Though, while the publishing of the patent and its details is from October 2018, Sony actually filed the patent back in 2016, meaning its not certain that it relates to any future hardware, or will definitively be utilized.

The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

What are your thoughts? Are you ready for a "PlayStation 5" to maybe get a reveal soon? Do you think Sony can hold onto the lead they gained over Microsoft this gen? And would a new PlayStation system even offer backwards compatibility, when the PlayStation 4 notably did not?

I mean I don't see how more choices are a bad thing. And I don't see how the (thankfully) few people talking about Nintendo can pretend they didn't start this with 3DS than the New 3DS and now the Switch and new Switch.

The only reason they had a new hardware line this time is because the Wii U became the Wii P U and didn't sell so I wouldn't my chickens before they hatch

Im not sure how bc would work on the ps4 right now, unless they can add new native software emulators in a update.

It would have to be on the ps5,but bc may make it cost alot more than the scarlet,so then the ps5 would be like the ps3 all over again.

So its probably going to be like this

Scarlet=cheap but no exclusives.Could be on the same level of a ryzen 5 with a gtx 1060.Better spec wise

Ps5=Bc with ps4 and possibly ps3 and ps2 aswell, which will make it more expensive, only for sony to cut features in order to make the cost go down.It will most likely keep exclusives but it might be expensive and weaker.

The idea of up scaling graphics and remastering textures on older systems is nothing new; I've seen it done with emulation in the past. It would be cool to see this implemented in an official console, though.

Also, assuming this new console has enough horsepower to emulate the PS3, I think backwards compatibility with all previous PlayStation consoles isn't entirely out of reach. I doubt PS4 games would even need to be emulated, just a compatibility layer implemented, assuming the new console uses the same architecture as the PS4.

PS3 was expensive because it had PS2 hardware inside, amongst other things like Blu-Ray. The idea here may be to make the PlayStation 5 similar to the PS4, like how the Wii U is to the Wii (and Wii to Gamecube), allowing native execution at higher detail settings.

With the death of Moores law, stale competition in the GPU space, and basically nil improvement in performance per dollar, increased memory costs. I don't see why this console generation should be shorter than the last. 2020 is too soon. Nobody is complaining about the quality of graphics this gen, except maybe pixel counters and they already have their X1X.
I realize how underpowered the jaguar cpu is this gen, and yes it's holding devs back somewhat. But sell that idea to the average consumer. Tell them their ps4pro is outdated and they need a new console in 2020 with new expensive controllers.

i wouldnt mind if they just straight up ripped off nintendo and made PS5 also a Vita. doesn't need to have joy-cons, im fine with the buttons being attached. so long as i can link it to the tv and use ps4 controllers and/or a new controller with better battery life

Ye exactly there is no longer "big jumps" between consoles generations like it used to be in the past (between PS1 and PS2, NES and SNES, Genesis and Saturn...).
Probably power doesn't justify the need to buy a new console anymore.

They don't need software emulators. They can use the same OS on a faster CPU (it's FreeBSD based after all), the complicated part is making GNM/GNMX/PSSL work with the new graphics card. Similar to how Sony enabled boost mode on PS4 Pro for older games.

Based on the general public's response from Sony's inability to add BC to the PS4, this makes sense. They'd be fools not to, since that's usually the first "con" I see with the PS4 from most people.
Don't forget name change lol that is debatable as well. At least one of our dreams is coming true.

I wonder if they are going to break away from the PS4 and treat the PS4 pro as a low entry PS5, when the PS5 finally comes out.

The PS4 and PS4 Pro aren't really different enough to justify keeping one and ditch the other.

While I think the PS5 could be an updated spec and natively run PS4 software, I'm not so sure that you'll be able to run PS5 games on your PS4 in a degraded state.

As each time they bring out another hardware platform that your game can run on then that is another set of QA that needs to be done. Software developers will want to do as little of that as possible.

Graphics today are soooo realistic
I wonder, how do games can require even more power?
I mean, I know we can do even better
like, instead of just a beach, every single piece of sand is modelised?
or integrate PureHair/HairWork to every animal, humans, furries (etc)?
or even on grass?
But still. how does graphics can become even more realistic?
Why do we NEED a ps5?
to run all 4k games with 60fps?
I though ps4 pro was doing it already?
Plus, with ps4 pro, have we reached its maximal potential yet?
I mean, is there a game exclusive to ps4 pro that use full potential of the console?
A bit like Breath of the wild for Wii U
Because if there isn't, I don't see why we would need a ps5

I don't think that we will see a PlayStation Switch, but another Xperia Play, to pair with a new home console.

And PLEASE give developers the ability to use a mouse and keyboard as a controller! The PS4 would have KILLED all the competition if they did: no excuses for crossplay with PC, more games that play better with a mouse, having huge esports games like League of Legends available in the system and so on.

In all seriousness, I never understood how gamers could say :
"FPS games are better played with a controller than with a mouse"
I mean, I always though it was easier to aim with mouse, no?

Mouse and keyboard support has been available for devs to integrate on the PS4 for years. The problem is with devs not bothering to add it, not that Sony didn't support it.

A few games support it currently, FFXIV, Overwatch, War Thunder, ESO IIRC and a couple others.
