Sony confirms they're working on a new console, patent potentially hints at backwards compatibility

ps (1).png

During an interview with The Financial Times--a business publication--Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's CEO confirmed that while they don't have anything official to say yet, they are working towards a new console release. "At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware" were his words. Of course, with four iterations of PlayStation systems so far, it's no doubt that Sony would eventually continue its success with gaming consoles. Such a claim shouldn't be a surprise, but it does beg the question as to when the next generation of hardware will actually begin to roll out, marking an end to the current PlayStation 4, which has been selling incredibly well, and if Sony will continue their hot streak.

Yoshida's comment also possibly ties into a document that Sony has filed. Within it is a patent for "remastering by emulation", which would allow for "legacy game software" to be remastered for a "higher resolution display". Though, while the publishing of the patent and its details is from October 2018, Sony actually filed the patent back in 2016, meaning its not certain that it relates to any future hardware, or will definitively be utilized.

The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

What are your thoughts? Are you ready for a "PlayStation 5" to maybe get a reveal soon? Do you think Sony can hold onto the lead they gained over Microsoft this gen? And would a new PlayStation system even offer backwards compatibility, when the PlayStation 4 notably did not?

If this where to see a lot more older rpg games get remastered or even the originals up on PSN that would be great. I never got to try Xenogears so i would love to see them emulated with trophy support. There are a fair few PS1 rpgs that could do with being on PSN as well.

Oh, PLEASE tell me that we get public access to that "remastering by emulation" setup! I mean, it's essentially the capability to do HD custom texture packs, and custom music to games on console! If not, then it's going to be pretty essential that somebody figures out how to hack the system to give us public access.

Next question is, what systems are we talking about being emulated? Just PS4, or could we potentially cover all of the previous PlayStation generations?

Finally, and kind of tying more into the very first question, but what kind of improved textures are we talking about? Since the original games didn't have the functionality built-in and it's being done entirely by the console itself, we could potentially implement bump mapping (add visual depth to objects via a special additional texture rather than changing the model), specular mapping (I believe this one's controlling how "shiny" and reflective an object is), and all sorts of extra stuff. Potentially, we could get some really amazing stuff going with this. Just imagine taking an already good-looking PS2 game like Final Fantasy X or Kingdom Hearts, and putting together a better look than the existing remasters. (I've personally always wanted to know how Traverse Town would look when going full-out insane on graphics. I'm taking a modeling class, and when we learn how to work with texturing like that, I want to start looking for a ripped TT model to play with and do just that.)

My friend from school thinks Sony should add a PS2 emulator to the PS4 PlayStation Store and charge people $100 for it. That way people can play their old PS2 discs on the PS4. Of course, Sony would have to make another model of the PS4 that can read CDs, since the purple PS2 discs were CDs. He also said they should add a label on the box that says, "Now Plays PS2 Games."

Let me do the math. So that's $300 for the PS4, and $100 for the emulator. $400 if you wanna play PS2 games on the PS4. Roughly 300 million people live in the U.S., and (I assume) a good 50% of them still have PS2 games lying around. If all those people bought the new PS4 with PS2 compatibility, that's $60 billion dollars Sony just made.

However, I don't expect them to go through with it because it's something that actually makes sense... What do you guys think?

300M people in USA yea
but how much can afford a new PS4?
Certainly not half of all of americans

BTW, PS2 sold 100M console worldwidely iirc
and it was the most sold console in history
So, no... certainly not 150M of console sold just in USA

Plus, 300M peoples doesnt mean 300M household
Most people buy a console for the household
they don't usually buy 2 gamecube because the household has 2 child

Then again, it's just an estimate. I didn't have the time to calculate every single detail, but my friend still thinks they'd get rich from it.

Wait, they're patenting an emulator that substitutes in hi-res textures? Pretty sure that's been a thing for, like, 15 years.

Wow how time is flying, my Xbox one still feels kinda new.

Sony, remove paid online and I'll be jumping ship, if xbox removes paid online il be staying. Would be a huge kick of sand in the face of Nintendo which they deserve
Pretty much doubt that will happen any time soon. The amount of money Sony and M$ are making from paid online they would be fools to remove it on next gen......we can hope though.

I think this actually sounds really dumb and unreasonable; charging $100 for an emulator is pretty excessive, especially considering the (software-based) emulator in question already exists, and is able to run most PS2 games just fine on every PS4 model. I think it would be reasonable to sell the emulator as a "feature" for like $5-10, and that's assuming the finalize/polish it to work with every commercially released PS2 title.

Of course they are making a new console. Its gonna be able to play ps4 games easily because its gonna still be x86 based. Didnt they basically say they were going to just keep releasing upgraded hardware thats the same as the pervious except to its more powerful. Its just the same as an upgrading a pc. PCs have need the same since IBM started the term "Personal Computer".

Nintendo is the only ones with different architecture. Nintendo could make a powerful x86 based console and then that would be considered new since they have never made one before. I would not be a mear upgrade but a new console line.

PS4 pro is not a new line in the same manner as sxox one is not a new line. I think we wont see brand new lines unless its from nintendo.

Hope the PS5 is not hardware from this year or we won't even get that much of a upgrade to the PS4...

Hope they use the new upcoming AMD generation of GPU instead of the older Vega which is getting outdated on the PC pretty fast specially with Nvidias RTX crap.

Hope AMD do better gaming software on their top upcoming GPUs and introduce a RTX like free software solution and that next gen gensoles could use it...

AFAIK it's used by the PSP HD remakes.

It doesn't make sense at all.

Nobody is going to buy an emulator for $100.

Most people with PS2 games still have a PS2 to play them on, if you haven't then it is still way cheaper to just buy a PS2

Sony have only managed to sell 74 million PS4 worldwide so far & the system is on it's way out, sony will be trying to cost reduce it as much as possible. At this point I'd expect them to remove anything they can, not add new things.

They have tried writing PS2 emulators on the PS3 & PS4, they still haven't managed to make one that works well enough.

The problem with these "there are n people and n'% of people will buy this", is that it's just made up. Maybe only ten people will buy it.

He meant the upscaling patent... I've not seen anything to say they will be remastered.
