I renamed the index.html to config.html

Then I also added a hostname of wiiu.com

So I just have to go to wiiu.com in the wiiu browser.

I actually used this guide back at some point to get the zsun setup.

http://www.coyne.nu/blog/2016/01/31/installing-openwrt-on-the-zsun-wifi-card-reader-from-windows/

It goes over how to setup the unit has a AP/STP client so you can install packages like php5.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Once you install OpenWrt there is no going back to the zsun firmware unless you reflash.

well sir from the sound of it, you've got a bit more experience than i've got in the whole endeavor. i would like to ask a favor. ill compile all my instructions in this thread into the first post, would you mind taking a look at it, ya know in case im missing something or going about it in a roundabout way

Quick question. So this is just being used as a "router" that is also hosting the exploit, right? So technically we don't even need to plug this into the wii u?

correct it just needs power and the wii u CAN provide that

Some problems or different directions I took then the instructions you showed.

I can say, that I originally tried to install openwrt via the web browser, but I always got a status return of -2. I couldn't figure out what that status meant, but the firmware didn't take. So I did the more direct commands to update like this tutorial shows.

http://www.coyne.nu/blog/2016/01/31/installing-openwrt-on-the-zsun-wifi-card-reader-from-windows/

Writing to the mtd2 resulting in an out of memory error, and I for sure thought I bricked the device. But it did boot up with openwrt :-)

How to setup the szun to be a client and AP. This is so you can get php installed and any other packages you want:

https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/ap_sta

When setting up the sta client. My main network is WPA2
which results in:
option encryption psk2
WPA by itself is just psk

After you get internet access install php with these commands

opkg update
opkg list php*
opkg install php5 php5-cgi

Then add this into the uhttpd file in the /etc/config section.

list interpreter '.php=/usr/bin/php-cgi'

After you verify php is good, revert the changes you made in https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/ap_sta

I did mess around with the zsun alot before I put openwrt on. The device itself already supports php by default. There are actually two webservers running. I tftp'd the files needed for the exploit across for lighthttp, but the device was inconsistent in serving the files. Openwrt has made things much more reliable.

Do i need internet connection for this?

After the device is setup, no you do not need internet access

ok i see error -2 is the device cannot locate the update file. i received this error as well it seemed as if the update file kept getting deleted it was only after creating ".update" folder in windows after mounting the network drive it was automatically renamed to some miscellaneous name and i placed the .gz file there

Sorry I meant -1.

The gz file was extracted to the intermediate file. So part of the process worked. idk.

Yesterday i've recieve zsun.
After making all instructions i see "2" means Update successful.
2 minutes later after flashing - unplug device and plug into another pc. Hear windows sound about new device detection, see usb device in device manager, see my sd folder, but after 2 seconds windows automatically unplug zsun.
What i did wrong? Is this a brick?

It should do that, with openwrt you no longer will use it as an SD device.

You will be able to connect to the device via wifi. The default ssid is OpenWRT

Maybe, but i see it like an SD device for 2 seconds, then windows unplug it.
When i plug it and after win unplug my device i don't see any new ssid, only one - my home network...

And i think of course i cant see new ssid because windows unplug my device.

Dear friends,

ive bought for 6-7 months ago an zsun card reader from aliexpress (around ~15$) and used it for travel to show movies on the road last summer now i dont need it anymore because i bought an android smartphone. I found that zsun is not more heavy to hack and get openwrt on this device. i tried everything but no success. For example i come to the point tftp -g 10.168.168.100 -r openwrt-ar71xx-generic-zsun-sdreader-kernel.bin and i get everytime following message : tftp:timeout, tftp...retransitmit 0. I use also the way with sdcard method but the same i can not create an .update folder there. Can anybody help me please?

To create the folder in SMB use ".update." (no quotes) The period at the end allows this to happen.

Strange. Try to plug the device into something different, like a usb power brick or wall plug. I wonder if your pc is removing power from the usb port?

Same problem in powerbank, unit try to initiate himself anв stopped, led not working, no ssid.
I think there is a problem with initialization or something, or bootloop, but i dont know how i can flash again zsun with ethernet or something else for example...

Well that's not good. Sounds like it's bricked from what you are describing.

thats the snag.. to my knowledge thats what i would have to do. although when done, it just resets my openwrt to default settings as opposed to actually reverting back to stock. i know im missing something silly just trying to find it

@lordelan While looking for stock firmware, i stumbled across a work around posted on the hackaday article

https://hackaday.com/2016/01/27/cheap-wifi-devices-are-hardware-hacker-gold/#comments

Code:

Just upgraded to OpenWRT. Dziękuję! I couldn’t get the SMB share method to copy over to the device so I used this:

Run the Workmode change and then using the web interface,

upload the .tar.gz file to any directory on the device.

Unless you run the Workmode change first, you’ll get an error about not being able to upload from this device.

Use the telnet backdoor to login and create the /etc/disk/.update directory

and the mv the .tar.gz file into that directory.

Then perform the upFirmWare.

Done. btw, telnet 10.168.168.1 11880 does work with standard telnet client.
Cool, thanks! I'll try this on sunday!
