Is there any reason to keep updating your system by this point?
Now? Not much, online play is gone, unless you want to use the eShop to install game updates and/ or re-DL your purchased games. As for Pretendo, not sure if it requires the latest sys fw to operate or not, if it is then that's def another reason to update.
I remember when NIntendo releasing their final update for the 3DS and the update was suppose to interfere with homebrew or something. Was it any validity to that?
Not "interfere" with anything on your preexisting homebrewed 3ds, but it made it significantly hard for non-homebrewed 3ds's to install cfw, in comparison to how it was.

As long as Pretendo doesn't interfere with the update nag, it should be fine.

well, here's something. luma auto-copying boot.firm to nand only works if there is a boot.firm at the root of sd card

so I got fastboot3ds on firm0, luma on firm1, and configured fastboot3ds to autoboot firm1. small victory

tell me you didn't read my post without telling me you didn't read my post
I read your post. That's why I wrote this. Even the finalizing page from the 3ds guide says that it is recommended to copy the boot.firm into the nand. Otherwise you can't use the 3ds without an SD card anymore.

Honestly, it's one of the worst features to be added to Luma3DS, in my opinion.
No, I am not debating my opinion on this one. I am already using a custom version of Luma3DS that removed this feature.

The problem isn't on lumas side. It's boot9strap with this "quirk". But it makes sense imho. I mean, could you boot windows correctly without the system32 folder for example which is needed to boot your machine properly? It is one step you have to do. Especially these days where the 3ds doesn't get any relevant updates anymore so that you can't launch any homebrew on your system anymore.

Software doing things implicitly without user consent always raises a red flag. One has to evaluate if this does more good than harm. Luma3DS copying itself to NAND wins the consideration in my opinion:

3DS softmodding has become easier and easier. Many people did it and not all of them are willing to follow directions until the end. The effect has been unfinished installations, missing fail safe boot.firm on NAND and lots and lots of help requests. Doing everything automatically like the script on the finalizing page is very convenient, but it will make people understand even less what they are doing. These things have to simply work and this means Luma has to be on latest version on CTRNAND as well.

For myself I also dislike the automatic function, but overall it will prevent frustration and maybe even scrapped devices. In the end that is more important than a personal stance on the topic by those who are familiar with 3DS modding. Those who dislike it know how to avoid it → :)
