Metroid Prime 4 gets new trailer, releases next year

After all the waiting, Metroid Prime 4 has finally gotten a new trailer. A two-minute teaser shows off some long-awaited gameplay, and the visuals. The game also now has an official subtitle, and is now called Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. A full release date hasn't been confirmed, but Nintendo has locked the game in for a 2025 release.

>felt more like Call of Duty
Are you out of your mind ? It literally plays like all Prime games, with lock-on and stuff

I don't understand why some people are « disappointed » because there are a few explosions in the prologue. The open shot at the end of the trailer tells me it's probably still going to be a Prime game like we expect it to be.

And personally I wouldn't have had much issue with it being more « action » centered. What matters is that

But I guess that all those who trashed Prime 3 because « it was too much action » will still find a way to hate this one just because of a few of those « action sequences ». I don't think it's that much of a deal. I'm fine with some scripted prologue and ending sequences for the sake of the story.

The gimmick for the New Switch could very well be: VR.

Nintendo don't chose Metroid as a launch title for no reason. They usually use Zelda as a transitioning game ("Twilight Princess" for GC and Wii, "Breath of the Wild" for Wii U and Switch). Metroid will be a perfect VR game, it's Nintendo's only FPS and has a HUD like Ironman - people will buy the new Switch and VR accessory just to play this game.

The new Switch has a custom T239 - it has Raytracing, DLSS 3.5 and more than enough power to run VR games on battery. The VR headset can be tethered to the Switch unit like Apple Vision Pro and it's battery.

Really mixed feelings here.
Playing Metroid NES since I'm 6 and all....First MP4 trailer in 2017, so seven years later ?

Full scale battle IS NOT Metroid. It is Halo or whatever, FFS.
They made this very mistake on MP3 which was lame at best (samus do this, samus do that). Besides scarce high notes, Retro studio was already out of ideas. Well, Nintendo updated Metroid to 'modern audiences', labyrinths aren't as popular as 'in your face' shooters.

The second part of the trailer definitely confirms my feeling:
it seems to want to rectify this mistake by trying to appeal hardcore fans with exploration and mystery, no bang bang crap. This game is not for me.

For fans:
Metroid DREAD is excellent, MERCURY Steam studio is very, very talented.
Metroid Hack (prime trilogy) runs flawlessly on Steam Deck, so all fans are happy.
Yuzu is still lurking around so, if this is a cross gen title, well...
bruh, how are you gunna say that when dread goes all in on action combat/counters/takedowns and railroading the player while having the most generic looking locations

The first 2 seconds of the video are a fullscreen switch logo.
The logo is also present on the title right before the 2025 ending.

I will agree though that they might release it on both devices, the graphics were too good to be running at 60fps on Switch, even 30fps for that matter.
There is no "releasing on both devices". The Switch 2 is backwards compatible.
Post automatically merged:

Looks like old-school game/level design. Probably a good thing.
Not old school. Literally has Metroid game/level design. Why would they change it?

So is PS5, but there's still an additional fee to get the upgraded texture resolution/frame rate with some PS4 games. We have no idea how Nintendo intends to monetize backward compatibility yet, and cross-gen games released after Switch 2's launch are an even bigger question mark.

That's not how it works. There is a reason the resolution is dynamic in 1st party games.

You have no idea how it will work, and neither do I. That's the only thing we can be certain of right now. Yes, Switch's resolution is dynamic but it mostly fluctuates between upscaled 720p and lower resolutions. If Nintendo wants to charge a fee for 1080p/60 FPS or better in Switch games running on Switch 2, there are unfortunately plenty of people who would pay it. If they think they can get people to double dip for two different versions of the same game for full price both times, there's a non-zero chance they'll go that route, too.

Check out Digital Foundry. They have pretty good explanation videos based on the known hardware components of the Switch 2.

The hardware tells us what Switch 2 is capable of doing, but it doesn't tell us anything about how Nintendo intends to monetize it. Of course we'd all prefer if it were as simple as putting a TotK Switch cartridge into Switch 2 and being able to play the game without resolution or frame rate drops, but there's nothing stopping Ninty from locking those improvements behind a $10 or $15 fee per game, either. The console will definitely be able to tell the difference between a Switch cartridge and a Switch 2 cartridge, after all.

Nintendo won't sell upgrades for existing first party games for a resolution bump, which won't be needing any coding in the first place.
Resolution upscaling WILL BE automatic for older games.

Also some of those games cost $70.

Good point here.
What makes a good metroid ?

M1 and super defined the genra.
For me, the most linear one was FUSION. I loved it back in 2004, but when I killed the final boss, I seriously asked to myself, "is the prologue finally over so we can have the main dish ?" And...nope, obviously.

DREAD is something bizarre at first glance:

- Music is bad, really really bad for this kind of game. THIS IS HERESY, pure and simple.
- 2.5D environments are lacking, which is a shame when we know the Lord of Shadows serie by MercurySteam, but hard to have a good art direction if you play a 100% subterranean game.
- Adam is still there, giving you directions, which I HATE.

But then...
- Controls are top notch
- Combat can be really dynamic due to counters at the expense of the armed canon purpose
- Upgrades have a lot of novelty to them, which is quite a feat
- Map is insanely complicated but quick to go through
- Boss fights are FUN
- Thrilling 'ALIEN' chase scenes are both hard and rewarding
- Chara design is really cool overall
- Macho sidenote: Samus talks only ONE time, which is perfect, but she lacks this hips balancing from 3DS remake

You can't tell me you didn't enjoyed the final boss fight.
Can you ?

Senpai finally noticed me

I never asserted that it would require additional coding on their part, but nor would it be the first time they've upcharged for something that required minimal/zero effort, so that's not something you can promise with any real certainty. This is the same company charging a premium subscription fee for access to N64 and Game Boy Advance games that some of their customers have already purchased from them multiple times.

A premium subscription fee, which still lowers than Sony's and Xbox's base subscription.

Not comparable, Xbox and Sony offer dedicated servers and monthly games released within the last year or so. Nintendo isn't offering anything more than they did with Wii or Wii U's online services, which were appropriately priced as free. Nintendo has grown far more comfortable with nickle and diming customers during the Switch's lifespan than they ever were previously, so people would be wise to prepare for the worst with Switch 2 even if they want to continue hoping for the best.

I'll probably end up buying it anyway, but I'm honestly not that hyped for this anymore. The wait has been so long since it was first announced that I feel that I've lost all interest. Maybe if it was released for PC (it won't be) I would be more interested.
