I don't think it would corrupt the SLC cache. When people used the hard mod it was basically like removing the emmc from the console and powering it on and we don't have reports of corruption

without the SD card the blue light should stay solid and the console can only be powerd off by removing power. Because IOSU gets loaded from SLC but crashes when it wants to mount the MLC.

If boot0 cant find boot1 on the SLC the LED will stay red

If boot1 fails (for example because system.xml is corrupt) then you get a blinking blue LED. https://discordapp.com/channels/889909936828612618/889909936828612621/1086799599957712976
Thank you for your detailed answer. After reading many confusing posts, your answer clarified things for me. I'll keep hoping for a boot1 exploit :) that i could write directly to the nand.

  • I took out my many years in the closet wiiU 32gb model.
  • it already had haxchi, with the paid game, nothing else
  • Runned homebrew channel, and then Wii U NAND Dumper v0.4 , waited like 2 hours
  • Just before ending the dump i noticed the MLC had an error retry count of 5, i did not know this app had an error count, first time i see this 5 error count.
1) The console works and boots ok for now. I will do another backup but, this might be a possible faulty model?

2)i don´t know how to compile wfs-extract.exe on windows in order to use it, and i don´t know how to join all 2gb bin files into one big 32gb file.

There should be an already compiled version. Combine with copy /b command.

You may want to use the Wii U a bit, so the cache gets filled with new data. Like, play a few games for an hour or 2.

My SD card just arrived, once I get home from work I plan on modding my late 2013 Wii U. I'd hate for my unit to die, as it's also my Wii (my launch Wii needs reballing, and I haven't found anyone willing to do that yet). In the worst case, I'll be able to dump my saves.

I've always had my Wii U hooked up, but haven't used it much since my Switch arrived in 2017. I booted it a few days ago, when I first came across this thread, and noticed the fan is getting noisy - it's been gathering dust, sadly. In the past 2 years, I think I've played it for only 4 or 5 times. So my unit might be the perfect testcase to see if NAND corruption could be prevented by simply keeping the console connected to the mains, even if you don't use it - IF it has Hynix eMMC of course (and given that it really is just the Hynix chips getting corrupted).

Looked on my day1 PAL WiiU Zombie bundle edition. Samsung emmc.

I've backed up everything just to stay on the safe side, no retry/errors while doing the backup with tiramisu nanddumper.
(used a 128GB SD and then put back the 16GB one you see there)

Do you mean you succeeded in make it work under Haxchi?
I would like to check the manufacturer of my mmc but the devs of mdinfo made it only available for Tiramisu/Aroma environments! Really sad!
Update to Tiramisu. It is not difficult. I just did it last week. Bonus: you get your DS game back and it’s playable after reinstalling it from the eShop.

Nope, they updated to Tiramisu and you should, too. See, you can't stay on old, outdated technology and at the same time complain that new, modern things won't work on your setup. That's somehow like asking why you can't play GTA 5 on your old Pentium II Windows 98 PC.

I know you can do this with cbhc, but if you copy the game, you can play the original, ds game without issue as usb takes priority. you may be able to do this with normal haxchi as well, but it will negate haxchi, most likely.

sadly, I think mine is one of those chernobyl ones. But at least it is still working fine.
It does have errors when trying to do the nand backup, errors in the same place, that appear every single time you try to backup.

  • The wiiU is a 32gb model, very used had 5.5.3 firmware, very touched, when it came to my hands it already had haxchi (no CBHC) , and mocha in the launcher
  • Every time i tried to backup of the nand, it gave a 5 times retry error count at about 034xxxxx out of 03B34000 in MLC (the 30gb mlc dump)
  • i was able to go into ftp and do a backup of the full storage_mlc folder, no issues found on ftp copy.
  • then i just went ahead, deleted haxchi, formated sdcard, went online and updated to firmare 5.5.6
  • Followed the newer guides and i was able to install tiramisu, but the nandbackup thing started to crash with a pink screen, then i saw a payload posted in this topic and nandbackup started to work and i was able to make the backup, but again 5 retry error count on an specific MLC area.
I will not be saving much into the internal storage because of these errors. I will just use USBs flashdrives or usb HDDs in order to avoid more future problems with it, at least i was able to backup the nand.

@JamesWA But the nand dump still finishes?
Can you dump /sys/logs from the slc and pm it to me?
Post automatically merged:

I made a new build of mdinfo, which shows the date in a nice format. But you don't need to rerun it, I can see from the CID that you have a July 2012, same as mine.

Well, you can always open up the old girl and take a look youself. Or get with the time.
Anyway, mine is Hynix and I picked it up back in 2018. The nand has also been empty for the past 4 years or so. Everything is launch from external drive, so yeah hopefully it won't crap out anytime soon because my other backup unit is also a freaking Hynix.

Just did a full backup of my NAND including MLC with 0 errors.

Black Wii U 32GB of unknown origin (Craigslist purchase), was running CBHC for a couple of years, but switched to Tiramisu when it was released. I've always used an external HDD for all items, since getting rid of CBHC, and my internal storage shows as having nothing on it per the Storage Manager. My SD card is a Cisco Enterprise 64GB that was made for use in Cisco UCS blade server FlexFlash controllers; the real manufacturer is not known as all of the branding on it is Cisco. I usually fire up the Wii U every few months.

Hope this helps:

Sorry for the dumb question. But why is it better to keep the nand empty? So that it has less read/write cycles?

I temporarily ran Tiramisu via the browser exploit to get it to work. No need for me to switch entirely. After all I only use it for save file backups.

Exactly. You might not see a difference for a long time but the NAND might live a few years longer than it would when getting used.

So this isn't directly connected to this error but it's a good idea in case you want to have your Wii U in a healthy state for as long as possible.

//EDIT: This is btw true for all flash based media. Like I'm still using a first generation SSD these days. When you look at SMART values power on hours show an old age / pre-fail warning but all other values are golden and the SSD works just fine. I archived this by using this SSD (mostly) read-only.
