The Sega Dreamcast turns 20 years old in the west

Dreamcast-Console-Set.jpg

Exactly 20 years ago today, the SEGA Dreamcast launched on store shelves across North America. When it released, the Dreamcast was an impressive console for many reasons--it officially brought SEGA's flagship series, Sonic the Hedgehog, into 3D with its 9/9/99 launch title of Sonic Adventure. There were other standout titles as well, such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia and Soul Calibur. And even to this day, you can still feel the effects of some of the Dreamcast's best games, with the upcoming Shenmue 3 finally continuing the tale of the series, and even having the collector's edition reference its platform of origin, by coming in a Dreamcast-styled case. Phantasy Star Online 2, a sequel to the 2000-released RPG Phantasy Star Online, which started on the Dreamcast, is also getting a western release, sometime next year. Of course, the Dreamcast is also remembered for being SEGA's final foray into the hardware market, before they bowed out and became a third party software company. Regardless of the highs and lows, the Dreamcast is sure to be fondly remembered by many. What's your favorite memory of the SEGA Dreamcast?

My favorite memory of the Dreamcast is the sound the cd drive makes when you open it and a disc is spinning. The classic noise that sounds like someone is saying "Oooohhhh"

PSO2 is pretty good, although they dicked around with the Western release for so long that anyone interested in that version is already pretty far in the Japanese game. Not to mention that 80% of the cosmetic items will probably be missing due to prudish censorship and licensing issues. I would not be surprised if they completely closed up shop here in the West if PSO2 doesn't do well (it likely won't, sadly).

If you think about it, they really had only one majority successful console, and that was the Genesis/MegaDrive. The SG1000 and Mark III never made it stateside and the Master System had no hope of competing with the NES. They milked the Genesis for all it was worth, I believe to their detriment. Nobody was interested in the life support add-ons like the SegaCD and 32x, and both successors were plagued by poor marketing and horrible timing. I wonder who will get the rights to Sonic and co. after they go under for good.
Ironically, I hope Nintendo gets Sonic but I also remembered that Sega also owns Atlus so if Nintendo does buy Sega, I hope it means Persona is also part of Nintendo's portfolio.

Oh who am I kidding, Microsoft will pay up the money and just keep Sega under their thumb.

For the 20th anniversary, I modded my Dreamcast with a GDEMU, GDEMU 3dprinted tray, Noctua fan mod, DCHDMI, rgb LED mod, controller fuse and RTC battery mod and finally had it whitened so it looks brand new.

my DC Gets played every day!

Back before I got into super smash bros melee I used to play Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast nonstop.

I still have fond memories of playing with my chao on the vmu

I wish the system had done better - I think it had a lot of potential but very poor support. Sega's decision to launch the system so soon after the Saturn was a big mistake.

Will always think of the console fondly.

Sega made many mistakes, to the point there are books about it. The pissing contest between Sega Of America and Sega of Japan did not help.

That's all I am gonna say about it.

The console that introduced me to games. Playing Sonic Adventure and Jet Grind Radio for hours is still burned into my memory. Adventure 1 is still the only game I can play forever over and over without getting bored because its so much fun to break. People complain that "the game is too glitchy" but honestly thats what makes it great. The spindash is so stupid broken that you can jump up buildings and walls with it and thats just the most fun thing ever. This is also the console that gave us Shenmue, still one of the most charming adventure games ever. Its one of those games that just sucks you in. Amazing console and even more amazing games.

Keep Dreaming

I played it exactly once, it was a demo unit at a local electronics store - the only thing I remembered was "wooo, colored buttons!" (and the fact it was gone by next time I went back there...)
