The Sega Dreamcast turns 20 years old in the west

Dreamcast-Console-Set.jpg

Exactly 20 years ago today, the SEGA Dreamcast launched on store shelves across North America. When it released, the Dreamcast was an impressive console for many reasons--it officially brought SEGA's flagship series, Sonic the Hedgehog, into 3D with its 9/9/99 launch title of Sonic Adventure. There were other standout titles as well, such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia and Soul Calibur. And even to this day, you can still feel the effects of some of the Dreamcast's best games, with the upcoming Shenmue 3 finally continuing the tale of the series, and even having the collector's edition reference its platform of origin, by coming in a Dreamcast-styled case. Phantasy Star Online 2, a sequel to the 2000-released RPG Phantasy Star Online, which started on the Dreamcast, is also getting a western release, sometime next year. Of course, the Dreamcast is also remembered for being SEGA's final foray into the hardware market, before they bowed out and became a third party software company. Regardless of the highs and lows, the Dreamcast is sure to be fondly remembered by many. What's your favorite memory of the SEGA Dreamcast?

I miss those days. I remember when me and my three brothers would play 4 player games such as Chu Chu Rocket, Oooga Booga, Toy Commander, Army Men and a few games of Sonic Shuffle. I'll never forget the arguments we had. lol

I remember buying a Sega Dreamcast to play Sonic Adventure and having to use a boot disk because it was the Japanese version. I remember the game was budgy as hell. I later got the International version that's way better.

I still have two working Sega Dreamcasts and even a few memory cards and rumble packs, even got the keyboard and mouse.

I didn't get the fishing rod, it only works on two games (well maybe more but whatever) and I hate fishing games.

And yes I did cheat out of doing the whole fishing thing on Adventure with codes.

Back before I got into super smash bros melee I used to play Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast nonstop.

I still have fond memories of playing with my chao on the vmu

I wish the system had done better - I think it had a lot of potential but very poor support. Sega's decision to launch the system so soon after the Saturn was a big mistake.

Will always think of the console fondly.

I remember buying a Dreamcast for cheap a year after it died. Combined with learning about how Dreamcast's anti-piracy was non-existant, it become my favourite console during my skint teenage years. A Dreamcast Mini would be high on my wishlist next to a Gamecube Mini but I think that might be a few years away unless the components to make it gets cheaper or Sega actually forks out money to M2 to make a DC emulator.

Dreamcast was even better if you got Bleemcast! For that sweet PS1 "backwards compatibility" ;)

I've said it once and I will say it again. Microsoft has no place in the console market, over priced hardware, no exclusives, game library is shared with PC. Sega could easily enter the hardware market again & knock Microsoft down even lower. Microsoft<Sega<Nintendo<Sony. Sega has a library of IP's to base new exclusive software on.

Sega has no capital and they have been putting out subpar games for years

The last good Sonic game was essentially an indie title published by Sega

I think Sega probably would take the path of easy money and just develop software for multiple consoles and just re-releasing their Genesis library several times. Imagine if Sega re-entered the hardware market and they released Sonic Boom. I think that would just sink them again.

the only time i ever touched a DC was 2000? I was in CHKD in norfolk back when i was 14 (btw CHKD is a children's hospital, was recovering from surgery) so not much exposure to sega's last stand in the hardware bussiness i honestly wished they break ties with nintendo because their views differ greatly on fan games

The Dreamcast was a console that was way ahead of it's time, if Sega waited another year or two to refine the hardware a bit more and opted for DVDs instead of GD ROMs the Dreamcast definitely would've sold much more I think.

I have fond memories of playing Dreamcast games with my older bro back in the day, used to play all sorts of stuff but I mainly remember playing the various Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games and using cheat codes to fuck around in the game. Lot of fun.

Nabbed one a few months back for cheapo along with a VGA adapter, put a ton of hours into Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi and played like halfway through Skies of Arkadia before I got distracted.

PSO2 is pretty good, although they dicked around with the Western release for so long that anyone interested in that version is already pretty far in the Japanese game. Not to mention that 80% of the cosmetic items will probably be missing due to prudish censorship and licensing issues. I would not be surprised if they completely closed up shop here in the West if PSO2 doesn't do well (it likely won't, sadly).

If you think about it, they really had only one majority successful console, and that was the Genesis/MegaDrive. The SG1000 and Mark III never made it stateside and the Master System had no hope of competing with the NES. They milked the Genesis for all it was worth, I believe to their detriment. Nobody was interested in the life support add-ons like the SegaCD and 32x, and both successors were plagued by poor marketing and horrible timing. I wonder who will get the rights to Sonic and co. after they go under for good.
