I've got another problem lol

So I'm trying to cfw a 3ds via soundhax, and when I boot into the 3ds sound application, I get this.

I've looked up this specific error message online and got nix.

I've been out of the scene for a while. I want to get a 2ds for my nephew/niece and hack it before giving it to them. Nintendo proper is selling refurbs on ebay for $50 a piece, which is a heck of a deal. Last time I hacked a 3ds, it was a huge pain that involved a system transfer because the one I purchased was above a certain firmware. I read that all firmwares are hackable now. Is there anything I need to be aware of before I order these refurbs from Nintendo or am I good to go?
Oh great, I can hear why people get sick of those who start their sentences, "As a mother..."

Anyway, as an uncle, I too bought an o2DS for my nephew. It's quite tempting to want to keep the slate for yourself. LMAO.

Those official Nintendo refurbs are neigh indistinguishable from brand new units. I have a theory that Nintendo has their manufacturers scrap together whatever leftover stock parts are in their inventories and assemble from them actual brand new systems minus the new-in-box packaging. The price difference compared to MSRP probably has to the do with a combination of market laws where companies can't sell products labelled new if they're missing stuff (ie, the box and plastic wrappings), anti- direct competitive sales undercutting against other retailers like [Target/Walmart/Amazon], and trying to offload their goods in their move to gradually discontinue the 3DS/2DS line family.

You can't go wrong with those refurbished o2DS. The ones sold on Nintendo's eBay store front might be slightly cheaper than their own site.

Information on how to install custom firmware: 3ds.hacks.guide
  • Most popular free hacking option available are seedminer and its related variants.
  • If you go with the ntrboot ds flashcart route, do yourself the flavor of buying the R4i Gold 3DS Plus (www.r4ids.cn).
  • If you're broke as shit on an extremely limited budget but still intend to go with ntrboot, the cheapest (but shitty) flashcarts are the R4iSHDC series (www.r4isdhc.com).

Let's see. What other advice to give... Oh, while the o2DS is naturally more durable than its clam shell siblings, there is a downside to its design. I highly recommend you install a screen protector or tempered glass, especially for the top screen. The lower screen is recessed, so it's exposure to scratches isn't as bad from accidental drops on leveled surfaces.

Your 3DS is already hacked.

Your 3DS is already hacked.
Really? It is? How do I access my cfw or homebrew launcher? Or more importantly, fbi.

Turn on your 3DS and hold (SELECT) button to verify if your 3DS does indeed has custom firmware. You should see Luma3DS v9.1 configuration. If Luma is stated to be an older version (7.1 - 9.0), look into Updating B9S. If you see 7.0.5 or below, follow instead A9LH to B9S. To learn how to open Homebrew Launcher to get to FBI, see Finalizing Setup.

Just updated my formerly Gateway-running O3DS and N3DS I haven't touched for years to B9S + Luma on 11.10. Does it make any sense to keep using .3DS format ROMs? Is there homebrew launcher for .3DS format similar to Gateway's, or do I need to just make the move to CIA?

I'm trying to convert the uncensored DQ8 .3DS game file into a CIA so I can run it on CFW, but I'm not having any luck with the Simple 3DS Converter (it keeps giving me an "ExHeader Decryption Failed" error. Is this because the .3DS file was modded?

If that's the case, are there any programs that would work? I don't have any experience with Python so I'm out of my element with 3dsconv.

Use GodMode9. https://3ds.guide/godmode9-usage

Probably a silly question, but I've never seen an answer before:

Things like Sudokuhax and Fredtool involve substituting a different program for an already-installed DSiware title.

Does this mean it's at least theoretically possible to substitute any DSiware title for any other DSiware title, even without CFW, as long as you have your movable.sed and provided you're not substituting a smaller title with a larger title? I don't suppose there's a tool for automating the process, is there?
No. You change the title to homebrew to install cfw. Or however this stuff works.
That is not he question. I know you're supposed to use it that way and that you can subsequently install DSiware via FBI and so on and that it is completely impractical to do anything else. But nonetheless I'm asking if this other completely impractical thing is nonetheless possible.

I'm not sure but I bet resident DSiWare expert @zoogie can tell you

Yes, it's mostly possible with just with the movable.sed and Tadpole (look at my sig). The only restriction is that if the target title doesn't have a save at all, then the injection title cannot be imported with a save as well. The import will fail if you try to import a title accompanied by a save into a no-save title.

There is no restriction on the comparative game binary (.srl/.nds/.app - all the same) size or the save size. That restriction was previously due to a bug in Tadpole.

I'm not going to provide any tutorials or extra tool development for this because it's an impractical and niche procedure and it can be adequately substituted by just finding a .cia of a title and importing with FBI (provided you have cfw). And if you already have the movable, then you're just minutes away from having cfw.

I would like to ask for help with updating my cfw.
I found my old 3DS (With Firmware 11.2.0-35E) and because I want play modded Fire Emblem Fates I started thinking about updating my cfw or something to has easier access to hombrew etc.
The biggest problem here is I don't know on what cfw I am on right now, nor how to update it without ruing my console.
The only thing I can say about my console is that I have icon to a Hombrew Launcher (1.1.1), but to leave it I need to turn off my console (While I remember that my friend with never version could just press home and close it like every other app) and I also have some kild of Luma app in one of my folders.
I know that is kinda vague, but I really don't remember anything beyond the fact that at the time I was using newest 3ds.hacks.guide and the fact that it required me to downgrade my system to do semething and then go back to firmware i had.

Hold SELECT at boot and say us which luma version on your console is. If under 7.0.5 you are definitely on a9lh and you should upgrade to b9s. If higher as 7.1 you are already on b9s. That means you should update luma first and then the system firmware.

Probably still arm9loaderhax (installing this required downgrading to 2.1 at some point).
Hold (SELECT) while booting. On the top of the upper screen it should say:
Luma v??? configuration
A Luma version ≤ v7.0.5 means A9LH

Upgrade to boot9strap by using this part of the guide:

Thank you for the lengthy response. When it comes to screen protectors, do you have a specific recommendation? Everyone online seems to suggest Hori (which are plastic). I'm a fan of tempered glass protectors on cellphones and the Switch, but I didn't know how well they would work with the 2ds/3ds. Also, I've seen where they even have glass screen protectors for the bottom screen. I'm not sure how that could work with a resistive touch screen, but if it does, maybe that would offer more protection (not sure). I'm open to suggestions.
Also, for ntrboot... is that something where you just have to use the card initially to install CFW or do you need to have the card in there every time you boot? Like if I'm doing this on multiple systems, can I just get one flash cart to install CFW on each system and keep the cart when I'm done or do I need to buy a cart for each system and leave it in the system?

Hori screen protectors are amazeballs because of Japan made PET film with exceptional clarity, compatibility with touchscreen, and ease of application. As much as this sounds a lot like marketing hype, Hori's known for making quality video game accessories. Their screen protectors will do the job at preventing scratches but not dents and cracks from hard impacts.

As for tempered glass, I'm not familiar with well established brands. Tempered glass is easier to put on and not subjected to as stringent quality control compared to plastic screen protectors. Unless you're buying really cheap, no-name generic t-glass off of eBay for not so popular devices, the worst panels are those with swirls and view distortion from uneven cooling in glass manufacturing. There's also knock off glass where it's not tempered but regular, bobo lime soda glass (again, cheapie-generic-no name scenario).
Which route you go depends on your nephew & niece's temperance in how they handle their belongings.
Edit - Stick to plastic screen protector for the touchscreen side. Just make sure it's absolutely clean before installing. Trapped lint and dust specks can interfere with input.

You only need one ntrboot flashcart to hack as many 3DS and 2DS systems as you like. Except for the R4i Gold 3DS Plus that has a built-in switch for dual modes, those DS flashcarts can be reflashed back and forth between ntrboot and DS modes.

If you intend to include NDS roms as part of their collection, it's probably better to buy two separate carts. Those $5 R4iSDHC aren't suggested because of time bomb, but this can be bypass with YSMenu kernel.
