Ok, another noob question...

In ModMii, I saw the message saying Nintendo's servers would close in 2019, so I downloaded the whole download queue, and it downloaded I think 139 files. When I go to folder "ModMii>temp", I see all these files along with various HBC apps I already installed in my previous mod.

So, what I want to know, is when I'll use ModMii again to mod a console and to prepare another SD card, will I be able to "tell" ModMii to go see in this folder to get the files instead of going on the Internet, and the prepare the "copy_to_sd" folder, or I'll have to manually go in the "temp" folder and build the SD card myself manually?

Maybe I don't understand ModMii correctly, I thought that this was to avoid having to redownload everything again? Am I correct here?

Hi guys,

I am trying to add games to my formated USB drive without success.
I have tried WBFS manager 3.0 and wii backup manager, both of them give me a success window after one second but the game is not on the drive.
I have downloaded various versions of the same game to make sure my copy was not corrupt, I tried FAT32 and WBFS formating.
I am a bit out of solutions, could the fault be on the drive fault ?

Thanks in advance for the help !

Is it already a xxxx.wbfs file? Is so just copy it to the wbfs directory on the usb drive.

Make sure it's a real hard drive and not a flash drive. Flash drives have a really hard time working on the Wii.

If it's an ISO you're converting to a xxxx.wbfs format, then try converting it on onto your computer hard drive and then copy that file to the USB drive.

Edit 1: Stick with the FAT32 format. A WBFS formatted hard drive isn't really used any more.

Edit 2: Also, don't get confused by having a WBFS formatted drive and the fact that the files made are .wbfs format. You'll use your xxxx.wbfs formatted wii games in the wbfs folder on the FAT32 USB Drive.

Thank you for your reply ca032769,

My games are in iso format.
It is a usb stick so I guess it could be a flash drive, but I have been using a usb stick before without too much trouble.
Wii backup manager converts the file to .wbfs when you transfer the file to the target right ? I tried to do that from hdd to hdd on my computer, but it gave the same error (see image).

Hard to say without going through the steps myself to see everything.

It looks like the flash drive (yes usb stick) is almost full so if you're going from C: to D: make sure there is enough room for the files to fit. The screen shot shows from D: to C: so as long as the ISO files on drive D: are good there should be no problem converting over to drive C.

Try putting your ISO on drive C: and make a directory C:\wbsf. Point drive 1 to C: (or where you have the ISO), then point drive 2 to C:\wbfs. Then go to Drive 1, check mark the file to covert & from the drop down menu select transfer to drive 2, but make sure there is enough room for the file to fit or it'll error out. Now you'll know in the C:wbfs directory how large the files for each game are and you can copy them to the flash drive to see if it works. I personally have used flash drives in the past that worked for me, SanDisk & PNY I believe.

I'll be out for a couple hours, but if it doesn't work send over some screen shots of the steps you're going through and maybe I can tell from them what the problem is.

No I was going from hard drive to hard drive on that screenshot, the usb stick is empty (only 8gb though).
This screenshot of the log might be more usefull actually... Any step I try, with any of my iso file, the program gives me an error saying it is an invalid wii disk ; hence my first attemp at downloading multiple versions thinking it was corrupt.
I was trying to find version 3.0.1 or 4.0 for WBFS manager but any link I find seems dead ?

PS : Out of curiosity, do you have any idea behind the mechanics of the flash drives potentially causing isues ?

Yes the constant writing to the flash memory causes them to fail, and that's if you're lucky enough to have one that consistently works to begin with.

I just checked and my version of WBM is 0.4.5 Build 78 (x64). Looking at the download page for WBM seems that the site is not really download friendly anymore: https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-backup-manager-for-windows.188295/

I'll look around, I have the 32bit & 64bit on my computer at home and see if I can put a link together, but I'm heading out for vacation tonight so depends if I have time. Maybe someone here can post a link for you to download it?

Hi folks - I'm new to the forums and in need of some help, if anyone would be willing to do a bit of hand-holding. I recently dug out the old wii for my wife to use and to be absolutely honest, I'm brain dead at this point with it. I recall doing some mod work on it several years ago but for the life of me can't remember what I did to get it to the point that it is. Seems I managed to get the homebrew channel installed on it, but have no clue as to it's current state. Checking the wii itself, it appears to be running OS 4.2. If I open homebrew channel, it is basically a clean slate.

How would I proceed from this point without fear of bricking the thing? My intention is update it to permit the use of a usb hard drive. I have tracked down an old 2g sd card that I am going to dedicate to the wii. Help, please! Anybody?

Use ModMii to redo the Wii. Choose YES when it asks if this is the first time modding it, it'll overwrite anything that's old and give you the most current versions of everything.

ModMii link: https://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-support-topic.207126/

EDIT 1: Also, you can use larger chips above firmware 4.0. I use 16, 32, 64, 128 & 256 chips all the time.

EDIT 2: Another also, when you install everything indicate you are on 4.2 (or whatever the Wii says it is under settings) and then when it asks go ahead and choose 4.3 to upgrade it to, will probably be marked as "Recommended".

Thanks a bunch, ca.
By larger chips, do you mean higher capacity sd cards?

Yes, the larger SD cards. At some point around maybe the 64GB range they'll become SDXC cards meaning higher capacity, so don't get hung up on the SDHC of lower capacity cards & SDXC of the higher capacity ones, they both work. I mainly use PNY & SanDisk brands, but there aren't really any issues with the SD cards.

The problem comes in when using the USB port for games, do NOT use flash drives, invest in a real external USB hard drive that has it's own power cable or at least a Y-cable so the drive gets enough power. I personally only use Western Digital My Books and have used 2TB, 4TB & currently 8TB models. Keep in mind they have to be set up properly if using a 4TB, 6TB, 8TB or 10TB (my next one to try in the new year).

Here's a link to a thread I had about the larger drives a while ago if you want to give that a go: http://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx.149922/page-1129#post-6662953

I won't waste my time tinkering with a thumb drive for this since they are a flash drive and doomed to failure with extensive rewrites. As for the SD card, if a time comes that the 2g sd card isn't up to the task, I'll swap the 32g sd card out of my wife's phone that she thinks she needs and never actually uses. Think she'll notice?

Thanks again, ca.

New question. Since I'm essentially going to be redoing this wii from scratch, would I be better off to allow the system to update to the latest firmware available, or stick with 4.2 ?

I guess it is your choice, but i would update to 4.3 just to be to the latest version.

In a prior post I'd mentioned that several years back I installed HBC but couldn't remember the particulars. I can't update via the system menu. When I try a system update I get error 32004 due to HBC already being installed.

Thanks Scooby, most of my issues have come about due to lack of understanding the concepts. Once I took a good hard look at ModMii and got a bit more comfortable in the driver's seat I realized that I didn't need to rely on the system menu to upgrade anything. Hacks applied and system menu is up to version 4.3U now.

Is there such a thing as a "top ten" or "must have" list of system utilities that should be found on everyone's SD cards?
